The importance of quality marketing collateral

Marketing is …..

What you do to capture and keep your customers over time. Getting the “tangible half” of marketing right should be your priority. That is your product/service, price, quantity, promotion, delivery, quality control, after sales service, guarantees etc.

The “tangible half” is only the tip of the iceberg though. Marketing is all about perception, the complete customer experience you provide for your client – what you say, what they see, what they can measure and how they feel about you, your product and your promotional materials. That’s all a big part of what we term “your brand”. You want to be seen as the “best possible choice” for your client right now. Not everyone is ready to buy on your timetable, so it is important to position yourself top of mind for when a prospect is ready to buy.

Advertising …. Should always have a purpose - to inform, sell, improve the firm’s image, launch, educate, etc. Be sure that it is aimed at your target market and written from the buyer’s perspective. A lot of advertising fails simply because it is the right message delivered to the wrong market. Structure your advertising to be:

1. The right solution to an emotional trigger (e.g. what do they want, need, desire)

or

2. The right solution for their pain points (e.g. frustration, ego, self-esteem, lack of time,

productivity or budget concerns)

Speak to the heart of their needs if you want your advertising to work. And your ad should catch the eye, arouse interest, create desire and lead to action?

Creating that point of difference through your brand

“Regardless of age, regardless of position, regardless of the business we happen to be in, all of us need to understand the importance of branding.

We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc.

To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.”

Tom Peters in Fast Company

A solid personal brand makes you and your business more memorable. Create that perception through:

• A website that reflects your business and your personality – with great images that tell your

real story.

• Good promotional materials written from the buyer’s perspective – your role is to solve a

problem, find a solution and anaesthetize the pain.

• Create community through email marketing – be seen as a giver and an expert in your field.

• Engage social media platforms - where your shoppers are, your referrers are, and your

reviewers are.

• Have clear signage for awnings, vehicles, building, uniforms, etc.

• Prepare a backstory that people can hook with emotionally – Seth Goden said, “Marketing is

no longer about the products you sell but the stories you tell”.

Your brand and your point of difference costs you nothing. Be different and define your personal brand, known as:

• A point of difference

• A unique selling proposition

• A niche

• A sustainable competitive edge

• A sustainable competitive advantage
