CREATE STUDENT-FRIENDLY LEARNING TARGETS
- Select a learning target that would benefit from being rephrased for students.
Students will know, recognize and distinguish the Earth’s
Atmosphere and its layers.
- Follow the process described in the section “Converting Knowledge and
Reasoning Learning Targets to Student Friendly Language”.
- Share any impact you noticed of using the student-friendly definition with
your students.
I could not use this student-friendly definition with my students because it is a
learning target that I used when I taught Science and now I am just teaching
English as an extracurricular teacher.
I have not used the learning targets I normally use in my current lessons
because they are clear enough for children to understand.
In spite of this fact, I am going to reflect on the impact that using student-
friendly learning targets in the class have on my students. They do like being
able to understand and know what they are going to learn in each unit, even
each day. When I started telling them the learning targets that I wanted them

This learning target focuses on knowing and understanding what the Earth's Atmosphere is and the different layers it has; recognising each one of the Earth's layers and distinguishing them.

Students will understand what the Earth's Atmosphere is. They will know that the Earth's Atmosphere is divided into layers. They will have to name the layers. They will learn the layers' features.

We learn the Earth's Atmosphere and its layers. It means, we can tell more about what the Atmosphere of the Earth is, we can recognize it is divided into layers, we can name all the layers and distinguish them because we know their features.

to get in each unit, they started asking me to know more about it, I mean, they
asked me every day for the learning target of each lesson. The first day they
asked me, it was a little bit embarrassing because I had not thought about
what the learning target for that class was, however from that moment I
started preparing it (learning targets for each lesson instead of for the whole
unit) and I let them know it, so that I could motivate them and they could
improve their learning.
