Warm UpThink about: don’t write down 1. What is heat? 2. How does the heat from the sun

reach us on Earth? 3. How does the heater in our

classroom heat up the air in the room?

How does the Earth heat up?

Heat can be transferred in 3 different ways

Page 4: Create a trifold Conduction Convection Radiation Include notes and 2 pictures for each

Conduction

The transfer of heat from one material to another by direct contact (touch)

Page 5: Create a trifold Conduction Convection Radiation Include notes and 2 pictures for each

EXAMPLE OF CONDUCTION

A piece of cheese melts as heat is transferred from the meat to the cheese (Contact)

Page 6: Create a trifold Conduction Convection Radiation Include notes and 2 pictures for each

Radiation

The transfer of heat as waves and can travel through outer space– how the sun’s heat reaches Earth– microwaves use radiation– Fire

Examples of RADIATION

1. Fire2. Heat Lamps3. Sun

Convection

The transfer of heat by the movement of a liquid or gas– Hot air rises, cold air sinks– A hot air balloon– Lava lamps– The wind is caused by convection

currents

Explaining Convection Convection

currents cause the cooler breezes you experience by a large body of water.

These currents also cause the movement of magma within the earth.

Examples of Convection: Have you ever noticed that the air near the

ceiling is warmer than the air near the floor? Or that water in a pool is cooler at the deep end?

Examples: air movement in a home, pot of heating water.

Pick one of these examples and draw the circular pattern in your notes.

Which type of heat transfer?

1. Sitting by a warm fire2. A room warmed by a radiator3. Frying a piece of fish4. A spoon sitting in a cup of hot coffee5. A heating lamp6. Ironing a shirt

Insulators are materials that do not allow heat to move easily through them.

What are Insulators?

Page 18: Create a trifold Conduction Convection Radiation Include notes and 2 pictures for each

What are Conductors?

Conductors are materials that allow heat to move easily through them.

Insulators Conductors

Research 5 examples of good insulators and conductors and include a picture for each.

Reflect on the many uses we have for insulators and conductors in our everyday life.
