CRDF Fashion Show Success

On May 30, 2018 the Fashion Design program participated for the first

time in the annual Five Keys Schools and Program’s Art Show. The ven-

ue was held at the beautiful historic Los Angeles Athletic Club. Models

show casted fashions arranging from pantsuits to elegant evening wear.

The designs were made by former and current fashion design students.

Fashion modeling was a first time event for most of the models. It truly

inspired them and greatly enhanced their self-esteem. All of the fashions

were donated to the volunteer models.

One of the highlights of the fashion show was when the fashion design

instructor, Ms. Cox, introduced a former student by the name of Angelina

Rose Scalise. Ms. Scalise successfully completed Fashion Design 1, 2,

and 3. Upon completion and release from the Century Regional Deten-

tion Facility (CRDF), Ms. Scalise enrolled in the Mt. San Antonio Col-

lege’s Fashion Design Program. She is currently an advanced student at

Mt. San Antonio College and is employed there as a part-time Teacher’s

Assistant instructing fashion design. Ms. Scalise attributes her success to

her former instructor, Ms. Cox. The Career Technical Education (CTE)

Fashion Design program inspires and open gates to those interested in

pursuing careers in the industry.

Empowering Leaders Through

Mindfulness

Student led mindfulness activi-

ty in Ms. Dee’s Leadership 2

class.

Leadership 2 has offered the

Merit Masters multiple oppor-

tunities for personal growth in

the areas of resiliency, confi-

dence, self-discipline, healing

trauma, decision making, and

conflict resolution. This course

is an extension of Leadership

101 which was designed to in-

vest in and promote Merit Mas-

ters at CRDF. Students are

learning essential skills and

techniques needed to teach

classes, facilitate groups, pro-

vide one-on-one peer support,

promote a safe milieu, assist

custody staff and reduce recidi-

vism.

Recidivism

I ran into a former student

at a beauty shop last week,

D. Evans whom I didn’t

recognize at first. She

stopped me as I was leav-

ing and told me that I

subbed for her class one

day when Ms. Liz was out.

She reports having a place

to live and a job doing hair

in the salon. She gave me

permission to use her

name and share her picture.

She also gave me her

booking number (LOL),

and would love to come

back and speak to other

students. Ms. Evans want-

ed me to thank each of the

following for helping her

during her stint at

CRDF: Ms. Liz, Ms.

Munoz, Mr. Aaron, Ser-

geant Gamboa, Senior

Sherman, Deputy Carmona

and Deputy Gonzalez in

3500. Ms. Evans explained

how EBI impacted her in a

positive way and reminded

her that life was not over, it

was just at a standstill.

Phenomenal Woman

As another school year came to a close

students reflected on Dr. Maya An-

gelou’s poem, “Phenomenal Woman.”

They created an artistic rendering of

what the poem meant to them. As they

leave my class I hope they will take

with them the feeling that they can con-

quer anything and that their choices

and character are what will drive their

future. I hope they will understand and

believe in their innate good and focus

on what’s within rather than what oth-

ers have judged them to be. Submission: Ms. Aileen

The New Me Submitted by Ms. Liz

Students come in and out frequently. One of the most important lessons learned is to uplift each other

and give positive affirmations. This was one of them:

The painting class submitted individual art and mural photographs (in progress and completed) to the

recent art show. The class continues work on the 3500 outdoor recreation mural, and continued general

maintenance throughout the facility. In conjunction with George Liou of DMH and Ms. Dee of Five

Keys we are repainting 1400 Pod 2 in preparation to launch the FRESH program as headed by Lt Neal
