    We ran seven talks for the second time in 2013.

    The talks were again very well attended, and in-between the crashes and bangs, there was a lot ofopportunities for the audience to participate!

    David Bebb, a veteran of CHaOS, who works forthe Cambridge Science Centre, gave a talk entitledWater: the weird and wonderful wet stuff.

    Nunu Taoand Raghd Rostom, undergraduateNatural Sciences students, investigated theproteins, DNA and other strange and excitingthings found inside cells.

    Sonja Dunbar, a biochemistry PhD student andbroadcaster for the online science magazineSciCam, gave an interactive talk about food chains.

    Lia Chappell, a PhD student at the SangerInstitute and president of the CambridgeUniversity Outreach Network, gave two talks:Arewe alone? andParasites: unwelcome visitors in your

    body, using possibly the largest microscope slideever seen in the Zoology Department!

    Lia Chappell and Philip Garsed, a PhD student in

    the Engineering Department, gave a talk aboutcryptography and explained the fundamentals ofthe internet using paper aeroplanes.

    Will Benfold, an undergraduate studying physicsat Downing College, gave a talk includingtornadoes and a giant capacitor!

    CHaOS talks at Crash, Bang, Squelch!

    New for 2013!An experiment to test sugar concentration in fakeblood samples using a blood glucose meter, andlearn about the different types of diabetes.

    A demonstration about different blood groups

    and why it is important to match blood fortransfusion.

    An experiment to demostrate how urinalysistests

    are used to diagnose diseases such as urinary tractinfections and kidney stones.

    A set of mind-bending prism gogglesto showhow well our brains can adapt to new sensoryinputs.

    We also hosted a visiting computer science

    experiment demostrating programming using aRaspberry Pi microcomputer.

    The kids love the big bangs and anything gooey.

    We learned so much!

    We really liked the enthusiasm of most ofthe demonstrators and their ability to relateexplanations to different ages and abilities.

    More sand please so a person can float in it!And more fire!

    Its fantastic. Very enjoyable, thank you!

    We thought it was excellent and will be back infuture years as our child gets older.

    The variety and number of experiments is greatand is pitched at the right level for ages of kids.

    We would like to thank CHaOS for such afantastic event!
