CRANE HIRE LTD STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES
1
OVERVIEW
At Crane Hire LTD. we aim to maintain a generative attitude towards health and safety. Heavy lifting by its nature is a
hazardous activity. In our attempt to identify and eliminate potentially high-risk practices we have developed our Standard
Operating Procedures.
These were devised in order to clearly define the roles and responsibilities of all personnel involved in lifting operations
and to clarify their duties in accordance with B.S. 7121, LOLER & PUWER. They also serve to standardise many processes
and identify and encourage safe and efficient methods of carrying out tasks.
Since their introduction our SOPs have helped in creating a solid, well understood and documented system for both minor
and major tasks that may otherwise be overlooked in standard risk assessments. We attempt to afford our employees
every opportunity to work safely.
THE HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT (HSE) CULTURE LADDER
WHAT’S INVOLVED
We have devised individual SOPs for the various competencies involved in lifting operations. These in turn are covered by
an all-encompassing staff handbook which is applicable to all employees. We have dedicated SOPs for the following:
The Appointed Person
The Crane Driver
The Slinger Signaller
Of course our SOPs have been prepared so that they comply with and reflect current statutory legislation and guidelines.
The legislation applicable to crane hire and in turn our SOPs includes:

PERSONNEL
The Appointed Person
The Appointed Person as defined in BS 7121 is someone who has been appointed to have overall control of the lifting
operation. They should have adequate training, experience and competency to carry out the lift. It is the duty of the
Appointed Person to prepare the safe system of work alongside all relevant Health & Safety documentation.
These duties are defined in the SOPs and offer our Appointed Persons a step by step guide to managing a lifting operation.
Crane Drivers
The Crane Driver is tasked with operating the crane in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the safe
system of work as set out by the Appointed Person. The crane driver should be suitably competent and trained to operate
the machine.
Our SOP’s clearly specify how a crane driver should approach their daily activities and every single action with their crane
from when they first enter the depot to when they return.
Slingers/Signallers
It is the responsibility of the Slinger to sling the load and ensure the correct lifting accessories are used. The Slinger will
be the one to direct the crane driver when undertaking lifts.
Once again the role and duty of the Slinger is identified in our SOPs alongside standard checks to be initiated by the Slinger
upon arrival on site. A diagram of the industry standard hand signals and a Risk Assessment for common slinging tasks
also form part of the instruction set.
IMPLEMENTATION
The lifting industry is constantly changing. To reflect this our Standard Operating Procedures are being continuously
developed to ensure they are 100% compliant with the most current legislation.
To ensure our employees remain fully informed of their responsibilities they are re-familiarised with their SOPs upon
release of each new edition. They confirm their understanding by way of signature.
