Cranbrook Community Theatre (CCT) brings us a com-edy and poignant drama about friendship, family and forgive-ness in its upcoming produc-tion, “Visiting Mr. Green”.

The story is about an elderly Jewish Manhattanite, Mr. Green, who has withdrawn

from life following his wife’s recent death.

Ross Gardiner, a young cor-porate executive, is found guilty of reckless driving after almost hitting the elderly Mr. Green, and a community ser-vice order is imposed upon Ross: he must spend the next six months making weekly vis-

its to Mr. Green. What starts off as a comedy

about two people who resent being in the same room togeth-er develops into drama, as fam-ily secrets are revealed and old wounds are opened.

The B.C. govern-ment has announced $65,000 for trades train-ing at the College of the Rockies.

The one-time fund-

ing is for 16 foundation seats in trades training courses during 2013-2014, Advanced Educa-tion Minister Amrik Virk announced Thurs-day.

The funding will support student spaces in the College of the Rockies’ electrical pro-gram at its Cranbrook campus.

Foundation training

programs provide stu-dents with the basic knowledge and skills needed for entry into a particular occupation.

Students receive credit for the first-level

apprenticeship training in a specific field by the Industry Training Au-thority once they have successfully completed the foundation pro-gram.

“Top-quality trades training is vital to the economic future of the Kootenays. These foun-dation seats at College of the Rockies under-line our government’s commitment to ensur-ing the right training is available in the right places at the right time,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett.

The funding is part of an overall $1.8 mil-lion for 456 student spaces in 2013-14 at 10 public post-secondary institutions throughout British Columbia and is over and above the funding that public post-secondary institu-tions will receive from the ITA in 2013−14 for foundation spaces.

This is the sixth year that the provin-cial government has provided targeted foundation skills fund-ing. From 2008−09 to 2013−14 the total funding for foundation skills programming is $10.3 million.

“The government of B.C.’s investment of this funding goes a long way to ensure the college continues to play a vital role in pre-paring skilled workers to support our econo-my and communities,” said College of the Rockies President and CEO David Walls.

“We thank the Min-istry of Advanced Edu-cation for this invest-ment in the college and in our students.”

Canadian author Glenn Dixon was at Mount Baker Secondary this week as a writer in residence through the Vancouver Writers Fest. Dixon worked with Grade 10 English and Social Studies students, talking about the experience he had while writing the book “Tripping the World Fantastic”.

Everywhere he went peo-ple made music in one way or another. In Vienna he studied what makes a musical genius. In Ireland he happened upon a woman playing a Celtic-style harp on the cliffs.

One topic in the book is the songs that humpback

whales sing.“There are several

humpback whale popula-tions around the world and each one has a different song,” he said. “Which is pretty cool.”

The writer post is part of the Vancouver Writers Fest “Spreading the Word” pro-gram which offers a chance

for communities that can’t at-tend the festival because of geographic or economic rea-sons to take part by sending a Canadian author to spend a week there.

Ilona Beiks, education co-ordinator for the Vancouver Writers Fest, said the program gives students a chance to work with authors. Last year’s

selected writer went to Haida Gwaii.

Beiks said Dixon is the first non-fiction author that they have chosen for the pro-gram.

The writer in residence program is sponsored by Am-azon and supported by the Writers Fest’s Michael R. Shaw Fund.

The City of Cran-brook is looking to start brainstorming on how the block around city hall could look in the future. Currently its city-owned buildings are city hall, the old fire station, the current RCMP de-tachment and the Stu-dio and Stage Door.

It also houses the old electrical brick building originally slated for demolition by council. The building will now likely be preserved by a group of volunteers in-tent on seeing it live on. The prospect of keeping that building brought the future of the space to the attention of Coun. Bob Whetham.

Whetham brought up the need for a vision of the property at a council meeting in the summer, as a result of the swell of support for preserving the brick building. He was look-ing for public input on the future of the city-owned property, since at some point in the fu-ture the RCMP building will need to be updated, just as the city hall building will need to be expanded.

The workshop is meant to bring about a

vision for what the whole space could look like in the future.

Rob Veg is the senior planner for the city and will lead the workshop.

“What we’re ulti-mately trying to achieve is to identify some of the requirements and get public input on the fu-ture use of city-owned land and buildings in the vicinity of city hall,” Veg said. “That will in-clude the fire hall, RCMP, the garage out back and all the city owned land.”

At the workshop, Veg will present the current layout and explain the scope of what they are seeking for input.

“It’s going to be a hands on workshop to solicit this input,” he said.

Then he will take that input and prepare a re-port for council if all goes to plan.

The workshop is Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 7-9 p.m. at the Manual Training Centre. Pre-registration is no later than Monday, Nov. 4. Pre-register by email to [email protected] or by calling Veg at 250-489-0241. The training centre is lo-cated at 1212 2nd Street North.

Regional studies of labour demand and supply by go2hr, B.C. tourism industry’s human resource associ-ation, indicate that 3,089 job openings are ex-pected in the Kootenay Rockies by 2020, but the region could face labour shortages as early as 2014.

“The Kootenay Rockies faces specific pressures within our in-dustry,” says Arlene Keis, CEO of go2hr. “The unemployment rate is already as tight as what we saw during the labour shortages in the mid-2000s.  Com-pared to many areas of

the province, the region will also have a higher percentage of jobs opening up due to re-tirements, and the Koo-tenay Rockies is also af-fected by seasonality and retention challeng-es, particularly in resort communities.”

The average regional labour demand growth rate is projected to be 1.3 per cent annually, which is slightly lower than the provincial aver-age of 1.6 per cent. By 2020, the region is ex-pected to have a labour shortage of 438 posi-tions left to be filled, which accounts for three per cent of the province’s anticipated

shortages.  The food and beverage, and recre-ation and entertain-ment sectors will be the hardest hit.

“The Kootenay Rock-ies region is already feel-ing the effects of labour shortages in the tourism sector,” said Heidi Ro-mich, owner of the Heid Out. “A number of our residents are drawn into the resource industries in the Kootenay Rockies, northern British Colum-bia, and Alberta, making it increasingly difficult for small businesses to fill positions in our in-dustry.”

Tourism businesses and destination man-agement and marketing

organizations are being encouraged to make la-bour recruitment, reten-tion and training a pri-ority. Last fall, go2hr launched the BC Tour-ism Labour Market Strategy (TLMS) to help address critical labour needs across B.C.’s six tourism regions.

The five industry groups that were select-ed for study within the tourism sector include: transportation, accom-modation, food and beverage services, rec-reation and entertain-ment services, and trav-el services. Further re-search was undertaken this year to better un-derstand each region’s

unique needs.Through the TLMS,

go2hr is working with industry, government and other stakeholders to take strong, proactive steps to leverage tour-ism’s increasing eco-nomic importance and address impending la-bour shortages. The strategy identifies op-portunities to:

• Develop career awareness and recruit-ment campaigns that will highlight job oppor-tunities in an exciting and diverse industry.

• Tap into under-rep-resented talent pools such as older workers, aboriginal people, new immigrants, and per-

sons with disabilities.• Extend recruitment

reach nationally and in-ternationally.

• Help industry oper-ators stay current with best practices in human resources in order to im-prove staff retention.

• Address the need for accessible and af-fordable training op-

tions in rural areas of the province.

To help the tourism industry align work-force, training and edu-cation strategies, go2hr is presenting at industry gatherings, hosting meetings and work-shops and providing up-to-date information to destination manage-ment organizations to pass onto their mem-bers and stakeholders. go2hr also offers a com-prehensive website that includes a free tourism niche job board and multiple informational resources.

The regional labour studies are available at www.go2hr.ca/regions.

Labour shortage forecast in local tourism industryKootenay Rockies region poised for tourism job growth with more than 3,000 new job openings by the end of the decade

“The unemployment rate is already as tight as what we saw during the

labour shortages in the mid 2000s.”

Midway through the stand-off, police learned that a house-keeper was in a room near the one where the man was holed up.

She was asked to stay in the room until it was safe to leave. Police removed her from the scene at about 5 p.m.

RCMP said the incident began at about 12:20 p.m. on Wednesday when the emotion-ally distraught man made a call seeking assistance and an am-bulance to take him to the hos-pital.

“However, upon police at-tendance, he became appre-hensive and non-compliant. Due to the statements he made,

police took action to ensure the safety of the subject and others,” said Cpl. Newel.

The lengthy police inci-dent ended peacefully, he went on.

“The trained negotiator and officers on scene were sensitive to the subject’s state and re-sponded accordingly to ensure a successful ending.”

Elk Valley RCMP are searching for a man in-volved in an incident of unlawful entrance into an Elkford residence on October 27.

Cpl. Gerry Sliworsky said police received a call at around 1:20 a.m. from a woman after she’d returned home to find an unknown male standing at the front door.

She didn’t recognize him and told him to

leave, then attempted to call 911. The man slapped her and she dropped the phone. She then fled to the bath-room and locked herself in.

She could hear the man trying the bath-room door handle, but then noices ceased until a short while later when a family member showed up at the resi-dence.

An investigation showed that the rear door to the residence

was open and footprints on the frost covered lawn indicated the man had most likely exited from there.

The woman was not physically hurt in the in-cident, said Swiworsky.

He said police are seeking the public’s as-sistance in trying to identify the male.

The man is described as a white male, 24 to 30 years of age, approxi-mately 6’3 in height and wearing a black sweater and blue jeans.

A new study con-cludes that B.C.’s Flat-head River Valley could play an important role in understanding White Nose Syndrome, a mys-terious disease that has nearly wiped out two North American bat species.

The first formal in-ventory of bats in the Flathead, conducted by bat biologist Dr. Cori Lausen over a four-day period in June 2013, de-tected both species of highly-endangered bat in the Flathead: little brown myotis and northern myotis.

This is the first re-cording of northern my-otis in southeast B.C. and it will be confirmed with follow-up study.

White Nose Syn-drome, responsible for the recent deaths of al-most seven million North American bats, is a poorly-understood fungal disease that kills bats while they hiber-nate. Lausen’s study, Bat Inventory of Flathead River Valley, points out that “every single miti-gation and prevention strategy that has come out of research into this disease requires that the roosts used by hibernat-

ing bats be known.” Hibernacula, or large

bat hibernation shelters, are commonly found in karst landscapes and are not known any-where in B.C.

Yet the Flathead area “is surrounded by karst, including the deepest cave in Canada,” says the study.

“Extensive karst in the Flathead area sug-gests that we may find large hibernacula, which in turn could lead to a greater understand-ing of bats across the west, and hope for help-ing bats survive the White Nose disease,” Lausen comments.

The study urges fu-ture inventory to fully describe bat diversity and understand the winter and summer habitats that are import-ant to Flathead bats.

It notes that an in-ventory is “of some ur-gency given the relative-ly rapid westward spread of the WNS fun-gus.”

Lausen and other bat researchers also acous-tically detected a third significant bat species, the eastern red bat, an at-risk species only re-cently discovered in B.C. and never so far south in the province.

The species was among 10 that bat re-searchers found or de-tected during the sec-ond annual Flathead BioBlitz in June 2013, organized by conserva-tion groups in B.C. and Alberta.

that he ended up writing half the magazine him-self (thus the ‘Who Goes There?’ pseudonym).

By sticking to these high standards, Camp-bell was the first to print work by Robert Hein-lein, Lester Del Ray, Theodore Sturgeon, Jack Williamson, L. Sprague de Camp, A. E. van Vogt, Clifford Si-mack and Isaac Asimov.

Campbell’s choices as an editor ushered in what is now seen as the golden age of science fiction. While more than 90 per cent of the pulp magazines were killed off by the paper shortag-es of World War Two, ‘Astounding’ remained available (surprisingly enough, it is still around, although now called ‘Analog’).

Although Campbell edited ‘Astounding’ until he died in 1971, his reputation faded much earlier than this. New magazines began to ap-pear in the early 1950s (‘Galaxy’ and ‘The Mag-azine of Science Fiction & Fantasy’), and their well crafted stories stole a sizable readership away from Campbell.

But there was a larger reason why Campbell’s star began to fade: No-body could stand the guy.

Campbell was the overbearing crew-cut cigar smoking boss who rubbed everyone the wrong way. His views on African Americans and Jewish people would as-tound his writers – as would his belief in UFOs, psychic abilities, and perpetual motion machines. One of the writers he discovered was L. Ron Hubbard, and he became so taken with Hubbard’s Dianet-ics that he talked of little else. Isaac Asimov com-mented that “talking to him meant listening to a monologue.”

“Who Goes There?” remains one of Camp-bell’s biggest contribu-tions to the field. Instead of a meteorite, the sci-entists in the story find a the hull of space ship which crashed millions of years ago. A survivor from the crash is a shapeshifting/murder-ing alien, which quickly begins to pick off the isolated scientists one by one. This story was

adapted for film in 1951 as “The Thing From An-other World,” in 1982 as “The Thing,” and again as “The Thing” in 2011. The first two ‘Alien’ films (1979 and 1986) also ap-pear to be heavily influ-enced by Campbell’s story.

William Dietrich’s novel “Dark Winter’ (2001) is basically Campbell’s story stretched into a large novel, with characters referencing ‘The Thing’ films, as well as one who keeps asking “who goes there?” It is the ultimate literary homage.

Shortly after his death, the John W. Campbell award was created to assist new writers, and to recog-nize excellence in sci-ence fiction literature. The award was also a posthumous way of honouring Campbell for guiding science fiction into what it is today, as well as for the dozens of careers he launched (even if the writers did have to sit through a three-hour lecture on why L. Ron Hubbard de-served the Nobel Peace Prize.)

Director Tanya Laing Gahr brings a small apartment in New York City to the stage where two local actors, Mi-chael Grossman and Jerrod Bondy, will have you shedding tears of laughter and empathy as they portray the tale of Mr. Green and Ross.

“This is a play I’ve wanted to direct for al-most 10 years,” said Laing Gahr.

“It blends humour and pathos so beautiful-ly and I think the themes will resonate strongly with Cranbrook the-atre-goers. And the way Michael and Jerrod ab-solutely embody these characters is simply brilliant. They astonish

me every rehearsal with their willingness to take chances and connect to this piece. They are out-standing actors.”

Visiting Mr. Green will run for 10 nights at the Studio/Stage Door, 11 – 11th Ave. S., Cran-brook, November 29 and 30, December 4 to 7 and December 11 to 14, 2013. All shows start at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $13 mem-bers/$15 non-members, available at Lotus Books, located at 33 S 10th Ave., Cranbrook, B.C.

“For years it lay buried...”

The “it” men-tioned above was dis-covered in 1938 by a handful of scientists stationed at Outpost 31 (now McMurdo Station) in Antarctica. Alerted to its presence by their geiger counters, the scientists first thought they had stum-bled on a large meteor-ite. They were incredibly and fatally wrong.

This is the plot of ‘Who Goes There?,” probably the greatest science fiction story ever written. It first ap-peared in the pages of

‘Astounding Magazine’ in 1938, written by Don A. Stuart. Of course, this was just a pseudonym. The real author was John W. Campbell (whose wife’s name was Donna Stuart), and he did more to influence modern science fiction than anyone else in the 20th century.

And chances are you have never heard of

him. Although he occa-

sionally wrote stories, John Campbell was first and foremost an editor.

An MIT drop-out, Campbell was hired to edit ‘Astounding Maga-

zine’ in the late 1930s. ‘Astounding’ was just one of the numerous pulp magazines which flourished in the United States before the Second World War. It was a pre-internet, pre-televi-sion, and pre-comic book era, and pulp fic-tion helped supply the mindless and trashy en-tertainment people needed to vegetate to.

The genre was called pulp as the publications were printed on the cheapest pulp paper available; think 10 grades below newsprint.

While most pulps read like a Harlequin ro-mance written by a nine-year-old, Camp-bell’s reign as an editor would destroy this char-acteristic. He aban-doned the silly super science and B-movie quality of ‘Astounding,’ and demanded that sto-ries not only be well written, but also scien-tifically accurate. This caused him to reject so many stories early on

DAILY TOWNSMAN / DAILY BULLETIN

In the church’s calendar, November 1 is celebrated as All Saints Day. (The old name was All Hallows Day. The evening before was called All Hallows Eve, or Hallowe’en.) For me, as for

many, this time of the church’s year is a thin place.

The term “thin place” comes from Celt-ic Christianity, which flourished in Ireland and parts of Scotland, Wales and northern England, beginning in the 5th century. There are many ways of de-scribing thin places, but it is essentially an occasion or a place or a time in which we experience God more close-ly.

Thomas Merton talks about a “world that is abso-lutely transparent; God is shining through it all the time.” The trouble is that we don’t always notice God shining through the world. In thin places, we man-age somehow to catch a glimpse of God. In thin places, the two levels of reality meet or intersect. The veil momentarily lifts and we experience God “more nearly, more dearly, more clearly” in the words of St. Richard of Chichester (1197–1253).

A Celtic saying has it that “heaven and earth are only three feet apart, but in thin places, that distance is even smaller.” Con-temporary poet Sharlande Sledge writes, “‘Thin places,’ the Celts call this space, / Both seen and unseen, / Where the door between the world / And the next is cracked open for a moment / And the light is not all on the other side.”

A thin place doesn’t need to be a place, necessarily. It can be a piece of music ... or a work of art ... or a certain person in whom

we experience the presence of the Spirit ... or it can be a place. For me, it’s the moun-tains. For me, it’s also this time of year, All Saints Day.

Why this time? It’s hard to say, actually. It’s an experience of the numinous, the holy, and such experiences are necessarily hard to put into words.

Part of it for me is that in this thin place, I ponder the past for a short while. It’s not that I have a desire to return to the past or

to second–guess the past. But I am mindful of what has gone before. I remember with deep gratitude all the saints who have peopled my life.

What is a saint? Laurence Housman, the early 20th century English novelist,

wrote “A saint is someone who makes goodness attractive”. Nathan Soderblom, Bishop and Primate of the Church of Swe-den from 1914–1931, said that “Saints are persons who make it easier for others to believe in God”. The Danish theologian Kierkegaard says that a saint is someone whose life manages to be a “cranny through which the infinite peeps”. In the New Testa-ment, saints are those who have been made holy and who have been made whole by God’s love. A saint is someone loved by God. For me, that includes every-one.

These descriptions point to saints as thin places. So I mark All Saints Day to re-member those who have gone before me who have been thin places in very personal ways in my life.

But there’s something more. All Saints Day reminds me again that the church

remembers people differently than the world remembers. Secular history is usu-ally the story of conquerors. The world measures their greatness in terms of power. How many wars have they won? How many peoples have they subdued? Will Cuppy says of Alexander 3 of Mace-donia that “he is known as Alexander the Great because he killed more people of more different kinds than any other man of his time.”

But we remember saints who sought to make the world a better place, who suf-fered unjustly, who alleviated or prevented the suffering of others. We remember peo-ple like St. Hugh of Lincoln. In the 12th century, King Henry 2 of England elevated Hugh to be prior of a new monastery the king had built. Hugh refused to accept the office until the king housed and compen-sated every peasant who had been evicted in order to build the new monastery. Com-pare that to the policies of the B.C. Govern-ment in providing housing for Expo ’86 and the 2010 Olympic Games, where the homeless were evicted without a single care.

In the world, such people are expend-able. In the gospel, they are not. In that way, All Saints Day reminds me again of the priorities of the gospel.

I invite you to reflect on the thin places in your own life. Where are the thin places, where your spirit is refreshed and where the door to the threshold of the sacred is opened? May the thin places in your life enable you to experience the deep pres-ence of God’s love.

Cranbrook was in the middle of a Victory Bond drive in

the final month of the final year of the war.

By the first week of November 1918, local citizens subscribed over $100,000. A $50 bond would buy 1,400 rifles cartridges or 100 hand grenades or 10 gas masks or 50 pair of sol-diers’ socks or 10 pair of soldier’s boots. It would pay one soldier for forty days or feed 100 soldiers for forty days or pay Canada’s war bill for four and one-third sec-onds.

The bond drive began in early October; just about the time that army engineer Harry Deacon succumbed to illness at Montreal.

Harry was 27 years old, a resident of Cran-brook since he was twelve. He enlisted with the Canadian Engineers in July 1917, but he, as with many casualties of the war, never reached the line of battle.

The funeral was held at Macpherson’s funeral parlour next to city hall, and the Last Post played over his grave by re-turned bugler ex-Sgt. Richardson.

Lt. Murray Howard, a pilot with the Royal Air Force, died from in-juries sustained in a dogfight over the fields of France in early au-tumn. While on squad-ron patrol he engaged two enemy scout planes, shooting both down.

He was then attacked by two others and shot through the back from beneath. He managed to land in safe territory but died in a casualty station shortly thereaf-ter. He is buried in the British Cemetery near Pernes, France.

Lt. Frank Wilson died leading his men in battle on Sept.24. He was promoted to Cap-tain the next day.

Jerry McGregor, a popular young man of the community was killed in action in late October, yet another name to be inscribed on the original “Heroic Dead” memorial on 10th Avenue.

Some good news ar-rived from overseas. Lt. Eugene Phillips, age 22, was awarded the covet-ed Military Cross for conspicuous bravery on the field of battle earlier in the year.

The London Gazette reported, “This officer displayed great dash, courage and enterprise in patrol duty on four different nights, secur-ing valuable informa-tion and harassing and inflicting casualties on the enemy.

“On one night he pushed forward with a small patrol in the bright moonlight, engaged an enemy wiring party with Lewis gun fire and killed six or eight and wound-ed others.

“Pressing forward he was engaged by three enemy machine guns, one of which he silenced with bombs and with-drew without casual-ties.”

Perhaps, in some small way, it balanced the scale of war for the Phillips family.

Eugene’s brother, Lt. Sperry Phillips, lost his leg in combat on March 28, 1916. Following a lengthy recovery period he returned to his par-ent’s home on 7th Ave-nue in January 1918, re-ceiving a hero’s wel-come.

On August 12, 1918, Eugene suffered a bullet wound in the shoulder from a German sniper.

The report of Lt. Phil-lips’ wound came days before the more tragic news of the death of Pri-vate Stewart Morris in England from meningi-tis.

In January, Stewart and a group of friends were sledding on Fink Hill (named for the Fink residence on the corner of 11th Street and 2nd Avenue), a popular win-ter activity for many of the boys who went off to fight.

Stewart was very well-liked in the com-munity. His obituary noted: “Stewart was a great big rawboned husky good natured fel-low. One would have thought that his splen-did physique could have withstood the ravages of any disease.”

He was sledding in January, enlisted in April and was dead by August.

It all came to a close on a cold November morning. The Armistice was signed at 5 a.m., with the agreement that all fighting would cease six hours later.

Word soon reached the larger cities and the festivities began, spreading across the Al-lied nations.

By the evening, Cranbrook was decorat-ed in banners and bun-ting, the local Herald newspaper published an extra edition and, at 8 p.m., November 11, 1918, bells began to ring, whistles to blow and sirens to sound.

A procession formed to the call of bugler Richardson at the old court house on the east end of Baker Street. Headed by returned veterans under a bil-lowing Union Jack flag and followed by every fraternity, lodge, politi-cal institution and au-tomobile in the city, the parade moved along Baker Street to the CPR station where a huge bonfire was lit and the German Kaiser burned in effigy.

Three cheers were given, God Save the King was sung and the crowd dispersed to begin their new lives.

It was a bittersweet celebration, of course, the deaths of so many local boys neither quickly nor easily for-gotten.

Shortly afterwards came the news that Lt. Eugene Phillips had been killed in action earlier in the month.

Although people in town assumed he was still recovering from his bullet wound, he had, in fact, returned to his unit when he was killed on November 1, 1918, the last local boy to die in the war, it would seem.

For many of the Cranbrook boys it turned out to be a short walk from their house to their memorial.

The carnage was not truly over, however, for although the Armistice halted the relentless mortality rate of the war, at home the locals were, to put it bluntly, drop-ping like flies.

The Avalanche will open their home dates this weekend by hosting the visiting Douglas College Royals on Fri-day night and Saturday afternoon for a pair of games.

The men are coming off two big wins on the season-opening trip to Vancouver Island against Vancouver Is-land University, and was oh-so-close to win-ning one of their match-es against Camosun College.

The women’s squad didn’t fare as well, los-ing all four matches

against VIU and Ca-mosun, however, they did get a feel for what to work on an improve in their game.

Men’s right side Cur-tis Stockton was named the Pacwest athlete of the week, with some impressive numbers that included 62 kills, 7 blocks and 14 aces.

Both teams had the bye weekend last week, and have had two weeks to prepare for the Roy-als.

Stockton said the opening results for his team were the result of hard work after endur-ing a 16-hour bus ride down to the competi-tion.

To go two-and-two on the road, is a really good thing. It was a re-ally good result, and we’re really pleased with that,” said Stock-ton. “We could’ve won all four, which shows how competitive we are, and we have never beaten VIU in their own gym ever, so to go back-to-back nights and beat

‘em in their own gym in five-set games said something about our character.”

The catalyst for the two wins was a loss to Camosun College in the second match that went to a tie breaking set. The Avs recovered from that, and went into Nanaimo to collect a pair of wins against VIU.

“That fifth set just shows how close were were, and if we put in a little more dive for that last ball and hit that ball a little bit harder, that we would’ve got over the line,” Stockton added.

The team was click-ing on the court, with some improved pass-ing, serve receive and setting, said Stockton.

“It’s pretty basic and it just gives us a little more confidence, so our passing definitely improved and we were serving aggressively, which is good to see,” he continued.

Jayden Roch, a left/right side with the

women’s squad, said that though the four losses were tough, there are lessons to be learned from each game.

“I think we learned a lot. We had one rough game, but we definitely took that and learned from it and came back the next day a lot stron-ger, Roch said.

“We came together as a team more and fo-cused on the things that we can control more, as a team, and I think that helped us a lot.

“The games, espe-cially the first two, moved pretty fast, but we competed and we definitely fought hard. We didn’t end up win-ning any sets, but we definitely competed for them.”

Both Roch and Stockton are expecting a good team in the Douglas College Royals, and both are anxious to play in front of a home crowd.

Stockton said the team has lost a few key

players from last year, but have strength and experience up the mid-dle and on the left side.

However, the Ava-lanche are hoping to make a statement.

“We really want to beat Douglas and put a stamp on this league,” said Stockton.

Roch said the wom-en’s team has looked at some game tape and have picked up on a few tendencies, but notes that her team just needs to be focused and play hard.

“I’m very excited, it’s our home opener. I’m a bit nervous, but I think our team is coming to-gether nicely and we’re working well together, so I’m hoping for the best,” said Roch.

Matches are at the College of the Rockies gymnasium and begin at 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men on Friday, followed by Saturday afternoon matches, which start at 1 p.m. for the women and 3 p.m. for the men.

Sabres forward Scott suspended 7 games for hit

to head on ErikssonNEW YORK - The NHL has suspended Buffalo

Sabres forward John Scott for seven games for his illegal check to Boston forward Loui Eriksson’s head.

Scott already has served three games while wait-ing for an in-person hearing, which was held Thurs-day morning.

Scott was issued a match penalty for charging and ejected for his hit on Eriksson early in the third period of Boston’s 5-2 win on Oct. 23.

Eriksson was skating through the neutral zone and had just dumped the puck into the Sabres zone when Scott skated in from the player’s right and struck him with a shoulder to the face.

Eriksson suffered a concussion and spent the night in a Buffalo hospital after the hit. He has yet to return to Boston’s lineup.

Impact ousted from MLS playo s with 3-0 loss to

Houston DynamoHOUSTON - The Montreal Impact’s first trip to

the MLS playoffs was short and not-so-sweet.The Impact qualified for the MLS playoffs in just

their second season, but limped to the finish line in the final two months and lost their first-ever playoff match against the Houston Dynamo 3-0 on Thurs-day.

A loss on the final day of the regular season pushed them down to the No. 5 seed, forcing the Impact to travel to Houston for the one-game knockout round against the Dynamo at BBVA Com-pass Stadium. The Dynamo finished two points ahead of Montreal in the standings to earn home field for the knockout round.

First-half goals by Will Bruin and Ricardo Clark sucked the life out of the Impact, who had a share of the Eastern Conference lead as late as Sept. 8 before falling to fifth.

Bruin scored a second goal in the 72nd minute after Montreal defender Nelson Rivas was ejected from the match following his second yellow card two minutes prior.

Raonic out of Paris Masters, eliminated from chance at

spot in London nalPARIS - Milos Raonic lost his chance for a spot in

the ATP World Tour Finals, as the Canadian went down to a 7-6 (13), 6-4 loss against Tomas Berdych on Thursday in the third round of the Paris Masters.

The defeat in just under two hours also settled the final lineup for the eight-man season wrapup, which starts Monday in London. Stanislas Wawrin-ka and Richard Gasquet gained the last two places as a result of Raonic’s loss.

The 22-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., lost against Berdych for the first time. He had beaten the Czech in both of their previous matches, including a Sep-tember final in Bangkok.

No Canadian has ever reached the year-end event in singles, though Toronto’s Daniel Nestor has made multiple appearances in doubles.

Local competitor makes an impression at fitness event

Tre vor Cr awleySports Editor

Hard work and dedication paid off for Kaytee Wheaton for a fitness competition in Edmonton, as she took to the stage against professionals in a World Beauty Fitness and Fashion event earlier in October.

Despite missing the cut for the top five in her division, she re-ceived positive feedback from her fellow competitors.

“Being a rookie underdog that nobody knew about—I don’t have a professional trainer that would’ve put my name out there more, also just not competing in the federation at all—I blindsided a lot of people,” Wheaton said.

“I got first-call out for both the morning and evening show, but unfortunately did not place in the top-five. But the feedback from the pros, was that I should have. I got incredible feedback.”

Wheaton has been training for the competition for the last year, which was originally set for June, but rescheduled due to flooding in Alberta.

She went up against 25 other athletes who came in from around the world to compete—the pro-fessionals of which are regularly featured in fitness magazines.

It was only Wheaton’s second competition, but that didn’t seem to faze her ability to make an im-pression on the judges and fellow competitors.

“When you first walk out, you do your routine, which is called a T-walk, and that’s your own set routine and then after you do your routine, you line up,” said Wheaton, “and that’s where the first callouts come out, they grab the best girls to be compared against each other.

“So we stand in a line and they make us do corner turns to com-pare and judge who has the best body and presence as well.”

Despite missing the top-five cut, she is happy with how she did, considering the positive feed-back from the professionals.

It was a much different experi-ence training for this event, com-pared to her first one, Wheaton said.

“I did one two years ago, but I crash-dieted and completely trained unhealthy and actually very damaging to my body,” she said. “So this was the first real one where I took it upon myself to train healthy and prove that it can be done healthy.”

She only gave herself a few months to train for her first compe-tition, and didn’t have a proper diet while doing excessive amounts of cardio and weight training.

This time around, she switched up her regimen with the help of local trainer Jodie Pickering.

“I gave myself enough time,” Wheaton said, “and then I didn’t have anyone giving my nutrition, so I completely listened to my body

of what’s working and what’s not, and being able to have so much time, I was able to do trial and error. If something felt wrong, I changed it.”

Wheaton wants to focus on her two jobs for the time being, but she is eyeing another competition next spring. She enjoys training for the fitness events because it keeps her accountable to herself.

“I think it was more so the one thing I could control,” Wheaton said. “If I don’t do the certain things that need to be done, there’s no one to blame but myself. I’m creating a body and a look that only I have control over, so if I fail, I fail my-self—I can’t blame anyone.

“So it was more so a goal that I could prove that I could get it done, even with a busy schedule and just prove to myself that it could be done healthy as well.”

Flyers pick up Downie, send Talbot to Avalanche

PaT Gr ahamAssociated Press

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Pardon Maxime Talbot if he’s a little bit over-whelmed right now.

He has a baby on the way and a new system to learn after being trad-ed for the first time in his NHL career.

The Colorado Ava-lanche acquired the vet-eran forward from the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday in exchange for Steve Downie.

Talbot is expected to be in Dallas when the Avs face the Stars on Fri-day night. The move is somewhat of a surprise, with Colorado off to a 10-1 start and leading its division. But Talbot’s elated that it came to fruition and is eager to get to work under first-year coach Patrick Roy.

“I’ve been following their great start to the season, what they’ve been doing,” Talbot said

in a phone interview as he waited for a plane bound for Dallas. “I’m really excited to be part of it.”

The 29-year-old Tal-bot had a goal and an assist for the Flyers this season. He has also played for Pittsburgh, helping the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup title.

His priorities once he arrives in town? Find a place to stay - and then a new doctor. His fiance is due in Febru-ary.

“That brings a little bit of stress into play,” Talbot said. “We’re ex-cited to do this in Den-ver.”

Talbot already knows quite a few players on the Avalanche, includ-ing Matt Duchene and Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Oh, and video coach Mario Duhamel, too, Talbot’s coach when he was a teenager.

“I get traded to a team that has a great deal of momentum right now. It’s exciting,” he said. “They’re on top of the league and there’s a reason for that. They’re a young team. They have a deep roster with a lot of young skill and they should be good for years to come.”

Part of the reason for the deal, Roy said, is to beef up the Avalanche’s penalty-kill unit. The team has been short-handed with for-ward Cody McLeod serving a five-game sus-pension for his hit along the boards on Detroit Red Wings defenceman Niklas Kronwall two weeks ago. McLeod will sit out one more before returning to the lineup.

“(Talbot) is a really good penalty-kill guy,” Roy said.

He has some scoring touch, too, finding the net 19 times in 2011-12.

Ott, Sigfridsson lead women at Masters Curling with 3-0 records

C anadian Press

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Mirjam Ott of Switzerland and Margaretha Sig-fridsson are tied at 3-0 atop the wom-en’s standings at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling.

Sigfridsson moved into a first-place tie with Ott after a convincing 7-1 win over Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa in Thursday’s seventh draw.

The native of Harnosand scored two in the first, fourth and fifth ends, and one in the sixth, and only allowed a single point in the third.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Anna Sidoro-va fell from the ranks of the unbeaten,

falling 6-5 to South Korea’s Ji-Sun Kim. Sidorova made it close by scoring one in the seventh end and stealing anoth-er in the eighth, but it wasn’t enough.

Kim and Sidorova are both tied for third at 2-1.

Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton (1-1) earned her first win of the tourna-ment, beating reigning world champi-on Eve Muirhead of Scotland 8-3. Muirhead fell to 1-2.

There’s a four-way tie atop the men’s standings with Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., Calgary’s Kevin Koe, Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton and Sven Michel all at 2-0.

daily townsman / daily Bulletin

Dear Annie: I am one of six boys. We are all very different. My oldest brother, “Tan-ner,” just turned 20. He is more of an intro-vert, and we realize this, but he has done nothing with his life and shows no interest in doing so. He doesn’t have a job and refus-es to look for one. He also hasn’t applied for college.

We’ve tried everything from coaxing and bribing to threatening, but nothing has worked. My parents are at their wits’ end. We’ve tried talking to him and asking why he has shown so little interest in anything and why he won’t even help with housework when he’s home all day. He just sits, stone-faced, and can’t provide a reason for being a freeloading slug.

I am out of high school and have a part-time job. My parents both work, and so does my 16-year-old brother. Please tell me what we can do to help get this kid out into the world. -- End of the Rope

Dear End: Has your brother been screened for depression? Is there a possi-bility of drug or alcohol use? Any of these things could be contributing to his lethargy and lack of motivation. If he is simply free-loading, the easiest way to fix that is to make him support himself and be responsible for his own living arrangements. But he sounds depressed to us. Your parents can visit HelpYourselfHelpOthers.org for screening information.

Dear Annie: I had emergency gall blad-der surgery last July. Thinking it was indiges-tion, I ignored the symptoms until the pain became severe.

Here’s what flummoxed me: While I was in the hospital, my husband called a close friend to let her know. She said she would be right over. I was in a lot of pain, had an oxy-gen tube in my nose and also was dozing off from the medication. She swooped in and immediately started grilling me, asking why I had oxygen, who did the surgery, and on and on. She kept asking more probing ques-tions until she made me uncomfortable, as if I were wrong to have had the surgery in the first place.

I tried to change the subject, asking about the memorial service for a friend. My husband then made a stupid, flippant com-ment about open caskets, and my friend just exploded and ran out of the room. I haven’t heard from her since. We live in a small town, and whenever she sees me, she scut-tles away.

I sent her a note to find out what caused this rift, but she ignored it. I think she’s ashamed of her behavior, and rightly so. I’m not interested in renewing the friendship, but I am still angry at how she treated me. I wish my husband had asked her to leave the hospital when she couldn’t stop criticizing my doctor. Should I try to speak with her? -- Sadder but Wiser Behind the Redwood Curtain

Dear Sadder: There are people who react poorly when confronted with a friend who is ill. Some become so distressed that they lose control of their behavior. Others need to be in charge of your care and resent learning about it secondhand, becoming irrationally angry. You are not likely to get a satisfying explanation, and she doesn’t seem willing to admit how inappropriate her behavior was. Forgive her and then move on.

Dear Annie: I want to respond to “Frus-trated in Louisville,” whose husband con-stantly interrupts her.

On several occasions, I’ve been asked a question, only to have someone else an-swer it or interrupt my answer. When this happens, I simply say, “It’s tough being a ventriloquist, but the best part is having your dummy speak for you.” After the usual laughter, the offending person learns not to do it again. Of course, this might not be the best response to a spouse. -- Ventriloquist in Ohio Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sug-ar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. ARIES (March 21-April 19)You could be jumping through hoops to get where you want to go. Unexpected events and others’ unintended interference could make finishing up what you must challenging. You could be verbal about the inter-ference, but it might not help you. Tonight: Go with the best suggestion. TAURUS (April 20-May 20)You have a lot going for you. You might not believe how much interference could run through your plans. Much of what is happening around you could be unexpected. Communicate what you need from others. To-night: Encourage a friend to join you after work. TGIF! GEMINI (May 21-June 20)Be more direct in how you deal with a child or new friend. This person might not be getting your message. A surprise comes in from someone you look up to. You could be somewhat off-kil-ter, which might result in a change of plans. Tonight: Make

time for a friend.CANCER (June 21-July 22)Your need for some quiet comes forward. Someone you meet could be quite electric in his or her communication. You can’t help but listen to this person. A close associate might express his or her feelings about a sit-uation and offer you guidance. Tonight: Head home first.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)You might be forced to look at someone’s behavior in a way that you’d prefer not to. This person is quite capable of delivering emotional jolts. Consider not reacting. Choose your responses carefully. A fam-ily member suddenly becomes more vocal. Tonight: Out with friends.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)Remain sensitive to a loved one, especially a sibling. Money could be involved in a decision, but if you are not comfortable with what is going on, say so. Others might not realize how many options they have. Dis-cuss different policies or ideas. Tonight: Your treat.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You feel empowered, and others will work with you. The irony is that you give a lot, even if you are not aware of it. An unex-pected insight revolving around a work or personal matter might set you back for a while. Tonight: Play the role of king or queen for a night.SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)Know when you have created an unsound problem for yourself as well as for others. A child or loved one might become diffi-cult. Randomly weird behavior also surrounds what you believe is a given. Tonight: Be mysteri-ous. Vanish, and meet up with a favorite person!SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)Understand what a friend wants from you. You might be mulling over your relationship with this person as a result. You could re-ceive an unexpected jolt from a family member. By now, you are getting use to these mini-mo-ments of uproar. Tonight: Only where the crowds are.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)You could be taken aback by a boss and/or a loved one. Many people appear to be confused.

You might be going through several changes, so you prob-ably won’t be as open or as tolerant as usual. A partner will go out of his or her way for you. Tonight: Accept the limelight.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You could opt not to get in-volved in others’ problems. A partner seems pushy and oversensitive. You might want to distance yourself. A conversa-tion with a loved one opens up new possibilities with greater understanding. Tonight: Look forward, not backward.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)A partner might make a gesture toward you. This person knows that he or she has been difficult. You’ll want to distance yourself, but understand that this is a phase. You seem rather vague to others. Discuss more of what you’re thinking. Tonight: Opt for togetherness. BORN TODAY Author Stephen Crane (1871), singer/songwriter Lyle Lovett (1957), golfer Gary Player (1935)***

With so many advertising mediumsdividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching

consumers. Why?Simply put, newspapers reach morepeople, more often. Highly portableand highly visible, newspaper ads go

with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely

to be on their minds when they’re inthe market for related products or

services. When it comes to spendingyour advertising dollars, make the
