Health Care Auxiliary held its first Annual Life Members Tea on March 14 at the Heritage Inn.

The Auxiliary wanted to honour and show their appreciation and re-spect to those members who have helped to make our organization

worked hard for years to raise millions of dollars in funding for equip-ment for the hospital.

Many members of this exclusive club are still active, including 95-year-old Edith Rose, who is the oldest active member and works the

Hospital Information desk twice a month.

Evelyn Botterill, who takes care of Jewellery and Antiques and con-venes the Tuesday after-

noon shift has been a member for 47 years. Donna Boggs has been a member for 46 years and still works every Satur-day morning as co-con-

venor of her shift.All of these ladies are

dedicated to their work and have made Cran-brook a much healthier place to live in.

their day in the Supreme Court of Canada with a case that has the potential to set a precedent for worldwide implications for in-digenous peoples.

The Nation has been involved in dispute with the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort, near In-vermere. According to the Ktu-naxa, Qat’muk (pronounced GÚT-MOOK), the area around the proposed ski resort, is of sig-nificant spiritual importance, where the Grizzly Bear Spirit was

born, goes to heal itself, and re-turns to the spirit world.

Canada’s top court an-nounced Thursday they will hear the Ktunaxa’s appeal of a deci-sion by the B.C. government that approved a Master Development Agreement for the proposed Jumbo resort.

The crux of the dispute is that the Ktunaxa Nation believes the B.C. government’s approval of the development plan violated their Charter right to freedom of religion, as the area around the proposed resort has significant

spiritual meaning to local First Nations groups.

The eventual ruling will have an impact beyond just the Ktu-naxa Nation, according to chair Kathryn Teneese.

“We see this as something that is going to be educational in na-ture as well as setting the stan-dard for how indigenous peo-ples’ spiritual beliefs are going to be taken into account as part of governments’ decision making processes,” said Teneese.

of a new junior hockey team, a wom-en’s team that plays in a league ded-icated to providing opportunities for young women to develop into colle-giate student-athletes.

The Junior Women’s Hockey League announced on Thursday, March 17, that it has approved three new teams for the next season, which will mark the league’s 10-year anniversary. Mikko Makela, former NHL player and longtime Warner Hockey School coach, will coach the team.

Ridley College in St. Catherines, Ont., and the Chicago “Young Amer-icans” (Chicago, IL), will also begin play for 2016-2017.

A press release from the league said that Makela knows the JWHL well and will be able to bring elite players to Kimberley. The league quoted the Kimberley Academy as saying they “are thrilled” at the op-portunity presented by the JWHL to be joining one of the premier female hockey leagues in North America.

not the charm for a team of local curlers.

After winning the B.C. Mens Masters championship for the last two years, a local rink had their luck run out, losing to the eventual champion in the semi final matchup at a tournament in Abbostford.

The team, comprised of Ralph Will, Gerry Kent, Peter Sweetman and Laddie Pavlis, curled their way through round robin with a hot start, winning their first three games before suffering a few close loses.

Winning their last round-rob-in game put them into the play-off bracket, where they took the first qualifier, but fell in a close 7-6 score to a rink out of the host curling club led by Keith Switzer.

“We got off to a good start, we won our first three games, but then we lost three close games in a row after that,” said Kent.

“Those games could’ve gone ei-ther way, but after that, we man-aged to get into the playoffs by winning our last game against Keith Switzer.

“The semifinal was close, it went to an extra end, and Ketih Switzer made a nice rock to win.”

Switzer, an old curling team-mate of Kent’s many years ago in Vancouver, went on to the fi-nals where he needed another extra end to win 8-7 to clinch the championship.

“Keith has a strong team, so I think they’ll do well at the na-tionals,” Kent added.

Kent’s team has won provin-cials the last two years running, and have gone on to the nation-al championship, finishing fourth in both tournaments.

“We were hoping for a three-peat, which hadn’t been done before in the men’s masters, just fell a bit short. We had good games, every game we lost was

close, so we felt that we were a contender and we enjoyed our week, apart from the losing,” Kent joked.

The Will Rink opened with three wins at scores of 5-3, 6-2 and 7-1 before experiencing some tough losses. The next two matches were close, as the Will Rink fell 4-3 and 9-8, while also suffering a 10-6 loss. They won their next two games, including a match against the Switzer rink, to get into playoffs.

Running alongside the men’s masters championship in Ab-botsford was the women’s mas-ters, which also featured a team from Cranbrook.

However, the ladies, includ-ing Joan Fiedler, Joy Walker, Christine Knight and Ruth Pers-son, had a tough go, with a re-cord of two wins and five losses.

After going on a tough run of five losses, the ladies were able to finish strong by winning their final two games at 6-5 and 9-5.

The much anticipat-ed off-leash dog park on the grounds of the for-mer Muriel Baxter School is almost com-plete. JRJ Fencing of Cranbrook, operated by Jana and Roger Jacob-sen, has mostly finished fencing in the area with the canine world in mind. It remains for the City of Cranbrook to in-stall such amenities and signage as will make the field off 2nd Street South and Victoria Ave-nue ideal for running, romping, rolling and chasing balls.

Muriel Baxter field already sees heavy four-footed traffic, and dogs and their owners are welcome to come down and try it out, not that they haven’t been already.

“You’d be amazed

how many people come and bring their dogs during the day, throw-ing balls, etc,” Jana Ja-cobsen said.

“It’s been a steady flow in and out of there when we’ve been work-ing.”

There are two new sets of gates in the park, one set over by the old school grounds and an-other one over in the corner by Victoria Ave-nue — a high traffic area. And the gates and park are designed for both little dogs and big dogs.

“The field has been the unofficial doggy area for a while now, but this will allow for safe usage, especially for the little dogs,” Jacobsen said. “They can go into that smaller area and not worry about being run over.

The City is going to provide water by the en-trances by the old school parking lot, so that in the heat of the summer there will be some spig-ots and watering bowls. And everybody can go through past the gar-

The concept of the Muriel Baxter Dog Park has the support of the family of that iconic Cranbrook teacher for whom the now van-ished school was named. Jacobsen said the initial design and construction has been

Jacobsen added that valuable input was con-tributed by the doggy

owners themselves, members of the Cran-brook Kennel Club.

“When we first start-ed talking I gave my ideas, they said talk to the dog people in the town. They’re the ones who’ve been around, they go elsewhere with their dogs, they see what is out there.”

For the Ktunaxa, Grizzly Bear Spirit is a unique and indispens-able source of collec-tive as well as individu-al guidance, strength, and protection, and a necessary part of many Ktunaxa spiritual prac-tices and beliefs.

Qat’muk’s spiritual importance is deeply connected to its biolog-ical significance for liv-ing grizzly bears now and in the future.

The United Nations’ Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, made by the international organiza-tion in 2007, sets out the individual and col-lective rights of indige-nous peoples, as well as their rights to culture, identity, language, em-ployment, health, edu-cation and other issues. Though not legally binding, the declara-tion was adopted with

support from 144 coun-tries, while Canada and three other nations conspicuously voted against the measure.

The result of the Su-preme Court’s deci-sion, whether in favour or against the Ktunaxa Nation, has the poten-tial to be a prece-dent-setting ruling in regards to indigenous peoples’ rights to free-dom of religion world-wide, said Teneese.

“There are articles in there [UN Declara-tion] that make refer-ence to the rights of in-digenous peoples to their spiritual beliefs and connections to places that have a rela-tionship to their spiri-tual beliefs so we are hopeful that we can get a decision that will confirm what the Unit-ed Nations declaration is already saying and also help us down the

For the project to move forward, the pro-ponents must start from scratch in the pro-cess to obtain a new EAC.

However, the legal dispute isn’t connected with the substantially started issue. The Ktu-naxa took the case—a charter challenge that the province infringed on their religious rights—to B.C. Su-preme court in April 2014, which ruled in fa-

vour of the province. An appeal of the same case was upheld by the courts in August 2015.

Now the Ktunaxa are bringing the issue to the Supreme Court of Canada, which chooses to hear cases based on an initial hearing.

“We are pleased with today’s ruling from the Supreme Court,” said Teneese.

“Our right to freedom of religion should not be held in less regard than that of other Ca-nadians. We are confi-dent that the Supreme Court of Canada will agree that Ktunaxa be-liefs and practices are vital to who we are and must be taken into ac-count by statutory deci-sion makers. This fight is not just for the Ktu-

naxa, but every Canadi-an who values the Charter of Rights and Freedoms as an inte-gral part of this society.”

The Supreme Court of Canada indicated that no date has been set, but legal counsel for the Ktunaxa Nation roughly estimates that the case won’t be heard until January or Febru-ary 2017.

“We are very excited to build on the long hockey tradition of our community by adding an elite female program to the renowned Dyna-miter hockey history.”

The Junior Women’s Hockey League was es-tablished in 2007 by Bill Driscoll and Kush Sidhu. It started with four teams, and has since expanded to more than a dozen in Canada and the U.S.

Teams in the JWHL are assigned to a divi-sion (East or West), based mostly on where the organizations are located (but not al-ways). Each team plays against the other teams in its division 3 times and against the teams in the other division two times during the regular season for a 27 game regular season. Follow-ing the regular season, a playoff is held to deter-mine the JWHL Cham-pion.

“The JWHL has been successful at develop-ing players because of

our commitment to our teams and athletes,” said JWHL co-founder Kush Sidhu said. “With a few teams leaving the JWHL, we are able to take this opportunity to bring in three solid and proven partners who

will help us execute on our mission going for-ward.”

Plans for the 2016-2017 including sched-ules and special events will be announced soon on the league website www.jwhl.org.

The purchase of a cordless drill set for the department is only possible from the generosity of people like you who supported the 2015 Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign. Together the two Tim Hortons outlets, the CHCA and EKFH sold individual, by the ½ or full dozen and case lots of cookies rais-ing $18,760 to support the equipment purchase.

The cordless drill set is an electrical-ly operated device, which is used by surgeons to drill holes through the bones to fix implants during orthope-dic surgeries.

The annual smile cookie campaign has been supporting health care in the region for over a decade making a last-ing impact in many areas of care at the regional hospital.

L ast week, I wrote about some of the things we can learn from Good Friday.

Next Friday, Christians from different churches in Cranbrook will join together for the twelfth Good Friday CrossWalk. We make a spiritual pilgrimage through the streets of down-town Cranbrook. This is wor-ship in the streets! We pray for our city, its leaders and all who live here. We pray for our nation and for the world.

The CrossWalk begins at 10 am on Good Friday at the Clock Tower. From there, we will carry a cross through the downtown core of the city and stop at sev-eral locations. At each stop, we read a passage from Scripture and we pray together.

Our prayers will embrace the city and its people, leaders and governments around the world, our legal system, our health care system, caregivers of all sorts and those who need to be sur-rounded with prayer and com-passion and grace. We pray for the victims and perpetrators of war and hatred. We pray for all whose lives need to be held up in the light of God’s love. We end with prayers for the church-es and other faith groups, all who seek to live with peace and compassion in the world. We pray that we might learn to live and work together with com-passion for the good of all peo-ple.

Why do we do this?We do it as a faithful witness

to the grace and compassion of God. We hold up our city in prayer so that God’s love might

surround and embrace us all with healing grace. We journey together, bearing witness to Jesus who comes to our world with a different vision of what a whole and healthy life looks like. God’s vision for the world is of a community of compas-sion and companionship. It’s a world where power resides in service and self–giving love, not in might and coercion. It’s a vision of healing and resto-ration so that all people may live together in peace with jus-tice.

For faithful Christians, the cross is about an alternative vi-sion of what life could be like. Jesus didn’t die on the cross primarily so that we could get to heaven. Rather, he was execut-ed by the state because his vi-sion of life was so radically dif-ferent that he was seen as a threat. In the cross, we see the depth of Jesus’ passion for a world based on a radical equal-

ity among all people. We see the power of God’s love, which holds us up even in the midst of the most painful suffering.

In our CrossWalk, in our prayers, we give voice to that vi-sion. We don’t ask God to come crashing into our world to set everything right. Rather, as we pray, we make a fresh commit-ment to live by the gospel values of compassion, peace, justice and wholeness. We make a public act of witness that we walk with Jesus, that we share that same vision of a life made whole and new.

Canadian theologian Doug-las John Hall talks about prayer as “learning to see the world through God’s eyes.” As we pray, we learn to view the world with compassion and grace. We learn to seek justice for all peo-ple. We seek to live on this earth as responsible and faithful peo-ple who care for one another and who care for the earth as

well.CrossWalking is one way in

which we renew our commit-ment to walk in the way of Jesus. It is a way that leads to a cross, since walking this path faithfully will bring us into conflict with the world and its values.

God invites us to be partners in what John Dominic Crossan calls “God’s great cleanup of the world”. We work in partnership with God, so that the gospel values of love and compassion and justice might triumph in our own lives and in the world.

God has a deep, abiding and profound love for the world. Our prayers for the city and all its people, for peace and justice, for hope and healing, reflects our longing to participate in God’s passionate love affair with the world.

As we journey through the city, we feel the burden of the cross we carry. At the same time, we experience the reality of its liberating power. We renew our commitment to the cruci-fied and risen Christ as we com-mit ourselves to serve Cran-brook in love.

Join us on Good Friday, March 25. We begin at the Clock Tower at 10 am, and end with fellowship and refreshments at Christ Church. I invite you to journey with us. Come pray with us. Come show your love for Cranbrook. Come carry the cross with us. Come and give witness to an alternative vision of what life could be like.

It took the town of Cran-brook six years before the first brewery was

constructed: the Cranbrook Brewing and Malting Compa-ny. Sadly, for fans of home-brew it was a short-lived affair. In business from 1904–1906, it closed due to financial difficul-ties, leaving Cranbrook beer drinkers to depend on numer-ous out of town suppliers for their suds.

In April, 1912, excavation began on a two-acre site out-side city limits in Slaterville for the construction of a new brewery under the manage-ment of Messrs. Andrew Muel-ler and Harry Hesse, both of the former Moyie Brewery. Local contractors Christian and Jones signed on for con-struction beginning in early May although it was to be al-most a year before it was com-plete.

Originally standing three storeys high — one of the tall-est buildings in the area — it consisted of a 35-bar-rel-a-day-capacity brewery measuring 38 feet by 50 feet, with water supplied by a deep well on the site, an additional 30-foot by 50-foot cold storage plant, an ice house to provide cooling in hot weather and an adjoining office. The beer was flowing by the autumn of 1913.

“Have you tried Cranbrook Brewery’s beer or porter yet?” asked an advertisement of the day. “It is fine. Phone 177 and we will deliver at your house.” It was business more-or-less as usual for the next 12 years.

There was the odd burp now and again: A fire quickly snuffed out by alert Slaterville residents when the boiler house threw sparks into the surrounding bush and a court case in 1917 — during the four years of prohibition in British Columbia — when the alcohol content of beer was limited to 2.5 percent and the brewery was found to be producing a product of over 6 percent. The case was eventually dismissed due to insufficient evidence with a sincere promise from the brewers to never ever ever do that again, a moot point when prohibition was repealed in 1921.

MacDonald of the CPR rail yards, the Catholic sister super-visor at the St. Eugene Hospital and the night watchman at the Sash & Door Lumber Co. in Slaterville, all phoned the tele-phone night operator to report that the structure was on fire.

The height of the building and its position in Slaterville gave first-rate sightlines throughout the city to view the ensuing blaze, one of the most spectacular in many years.

With only two fire hydrants available, one of which was malfunctioning, there was not enough pressure to successful-ly fight the blaze. A water pipe in the building also burst which further lessened the pressure.

The fire was joined by nu-

merous explosions from the bursting of both the vats and the compressed air tanks with-in the building. The grass to the rear of the brewery ignited and it was generally considered a wonder that both the adjoining office and nearby houses were saved.

As it was, the majority of the plant and machinery were completely destroyed. Princi-pal owner Joseph Brault of the Canadian (now the York) Hotel, J.E. Kennedy and others faced a loss of over $35,000 dollars, with the insurance covering only a portion of that.

ing came of it.For the fifteen men, sudden-

ly unemployed, the only bright light once the blaze was extin-guished was the possibility that the brewery might be rebuilt. In fact, a new brewery was soon under construction although this time on Joseph Prairie, im-mediately east of the railroad tracks and north of the city. There appears to be little on record of the construction un-dertaken by local contractor V. Liddicoat, save for a mention or two in council minutes as the brewery owners bargained with the city to have a water line extended to the site. The instal-lation of the plant’s machinery began in January, 1926, with the hope that brewing might begin very shortly under the guidance of W. Schwartz, a brew master formerly of Phila-delphia and recently of the Sas-katchewan Brewing Company of Saskatoon.

In February, 1926, Cran-brook’s city council agreed to float a loan to the Cranbrook Brewing Company in the amount of $1,200 at 6.5 percent interest in order to assist in the excavation for the new pipeline with the city “reserving the right to tap into the brewery line at any time,” by which it is understood to mean the water rather than the beer lines.

The Cranbrook brewery was noticeably north of the city and alone on the prairie when com-pleted but within a short time it was joined by the Imperial Oil Company who erected their storage tanks and warehouse immediately adjacent to the brewery and joined by North Star Oil to the north in 1932, thus helping to define the Cran-brook Street “Strip” of the fu-ture.

The Cranbrook Brewing Company continued unabated through the Depression, the Second World War and into the 1950s. In 1957, the Fernie, Nel-son, Trail and Cranbrook brew-eries amalgamated to form the Interior Brewing Company, consolidated into a single plant at Creston, the present day Co-lumbia Brewery.

The old Cranbrook Brewing Company building still stands on 6th Street, North, near the 7-11 store, its third and fourth floors, save a single south wall, torn off in the 1960s in order to facilitate removal of the tanks. It has seen use off and on over the years, generally for bottling works and recycling. With two games re-maining in the Western Hockey League regular season, Zak Zborosky is on a mission.

The 19-year-old na-tive of Regina has been a bright spot in what has otherwise been a trying season for the Kootenay Ice, who will miss the post-season for the first time in 18 years.

Easily lost in the 12-win campaign is the fact the 6-foot, 174-pound winger has posted ca-reer numbers, including 28 goals and 35 assists, to lead the club in scor-ing with 63 points.

“It’s one of the things that gets overlooked the most,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Koo-tenay Ice, “the success that he’s had on a team that — let’s call a spade a spade — has been void of talent at times with the injuries we’ve had

and things like that. A lot of times, talent is a product of your team-mates and he hasn’t had a lot of support a lot of nights. To do what he’s done is pretty remark-able and should be commended.”

Closing the season with a home-and-home series against the Cal-gary Hitmen, Zborosky’s

mission objective is simple: hit the 30-goal plateau.

“I’ve been talking about getting 30 goals since I hit the 27-goal mark,” Zborosky said with a smile Thursday afternoon prior to prac-tice at Western Finan-cial Place. “It’s on my mind, maybe a little too much. But I think that

would be really exciting, it would be a big mile-stone in my career.”

After being on the

radar for NHL Central Scouting ahead of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Zborosky was eventual-

ly dropped off the list and went undrafted heading into his third season in the WHL.

That factor helped motivate the speedy winger and tasked with leading the offense of a young group, Zborosky responded.

“It’s a big motivation,” Zborosky said. “Being knocked off the list and not drafted, not invited to a camp, you sort of look at yourself and real-ize that over the summer you’ve got to work hard-er and train harder. Then you’ve got to do more in games and be more pro-ductive. If you’re a skill guy, you’ve got to make those plays and score those goals.”

Having seen a num-ber of other undrafted WHL veterans sign NHL contracts in their over-age year, including for-mer teammate Jon Mar-tin, Zborosky’s hope for a professional opportunity is still very much alive as he pens the final few scenes of the 2015-16 season and begins look-ing ahead to his overage campaign in 2016-17.

“For Zak, to reach those types of plateaus, he has to be much more consistent within a game,” Pierce said. “I think that starts with practice, doing all the lit-tle habits right, hitting the net, stopping in front of the net, finding all those greasy things, too.

“It’s been good for him to see some of these players, and a former teammate in Jon, and other guys throughout the league that people never really expected to have the type of years they’ve had. It makes it realistic. It doesn’t make it easy, but it gives you

hope that it can be done.”Martin, of course,

signed an entry-level free agent contract with the NHL’s San Jose Sharks after stacking up career highs with the Swift Current Broncos, including 41 goals and 73 points through 68 games. Prior to that, Martin’s career bests with the Ice were no higher than 10 goals (2013-14) and 24 points (2014-15).

Riding a two-game winning streak into the final weekend of the regular season, Zbo-rosky and the Ice (12-52-6-0) will look to bite to the Calgary Hitmen (40-26-2-2) one final time in 2015-16. The Hitmen visit Cran-brook’s Western Finan-cial Place Friday night (7 p.m.) before hosting the Ice Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.) at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

“We’re pretty confi-dent coming in and we want to finish the year out strong,” Zborosky said. “We haven’t had the best year, but win-

ning these last two games — it’s fun when you win. I hope we can carry that into Friday night.”

It has been easily seen that Zborosky and the Ice have been enjoy-ing the game significant-ly more this past week and as far as Pierce is concerned, that’s been one of the biggest factors in sparking the success.

“We’re trying to enjoy the game as much as we can and at the same time, working to get better,” Pierce said. “Third period, you get a lead, you start to change your approach a little bit where now it’s about winning and shutting them down. But we got ourselves into that situ-ation [Tuesday against the Edmonton Oil Kings] by playing the game a little more loose, a little more free and having some fun.

“I think we’ve seen some improvement and growth in the way that we’re playing and gen-erating some offense on our own. We want to continue to enjoy it and continue to try and tweak some little things that can set us up and give us an idea what we having coming into next year.”

The Kootenay Ice will hand out team awards to recognize the best and brightest from the season past, with an ice-level ceremony prior to puck drop Friday night at Western Finan-cial Place.

The Kimberley Dy-namiters spotted them-selves a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Kootenay Conference champion-ship with a heart-stop-ping third period come-back in a 4-2 win Wednesday night at the Kimberley Civic Centre.

That victory didn’t come easily and the next won’t be any easier as the Nitros take their KIJHL championship defense on the road to Fruitvale for Games 3 and 4 this weekend.

“We can’t get too high, can’t get too low here,” said Nitros captain

Jason Richter, who scored the game-winner Wednesday night. “We haven’t been on a roadtrip with the fellas in a long time. We’re all pretty excited about it. We’re a close-knit group here. It’s exciting and we’re going to take it one game at a time.”

With a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes in Wednesday’s Game 2 defeat, the Nitehawks were painfully close to evening the series 1-1. Instead, they head home looking to claw their way out of a hole.

“We’ve got to play a full 60 minutes against

this team,” said Terry Jones, head coach of the Nitehawks. “I thought [Game 2] was a better effort all around. We fin-ished a lot more checks. We wore their top play-ers down a bit more. We’ve got to control the momentum.

“I’m hopeful we can come out, establish our-selves and our game-plan, get going offen-sively and continue to bear down offensively.

“It’s a seven-game series and we’ve got to win the next game.”

In their lone trip to Beaver Valley earlier this season, the Nitros es-

caped with a 4-3 over-time victory in January.

“You’ve got to simpli-fy your game, plain and simple,” said Jerry Bancks, head coach of the Dynamiters. “Keep the puck going forward, keep chipping it out, chipping it in and go get ‘em, forecheck hard.”

Game 3 is slated for 8:30 p.m. (Mountain) at the Beaver Valley Arena in Fruitvale, with Game 4 going at the same time Saturday.

Should the Nitehawks claim a win on home ice, the series returns to Kimberley for Game 5 on Monday at 7 p.m.

Cornelis Beek (“Neill”,”Kees”)

Cornelis passed away in the early hours of March 12, 2016, one month shy of his 89th birthday. He is survived and mourned by his wife of 59 years, Laura (Joyce) Beek (nee Lee); daughters Lesley (Winston) Adams of Regina Sk; Lynne (Ernie) Lalonde of West Kelowna, BC and family Kyle Lalonde (Piper) of New Westminster, BC

and Danielle Lalonde (Anders) of Melbourne, Australia; and son Kees (Louanne) Beek and family Alex, Noah and Maddie, all of Cranbrook BC.

Dad was predeceased by his parents and his two brothers Frans and Jacobus, both of The Hague, Netherlands.

Kees Sr was born in The Hague, Netherlands, April 16, 1927. The eldest of three boys, he grew up in the family’s flower shop until the onset of WWII. After the war, he emigrated to Canada, arriving at Pier 21 in March, 1952.

He worked as a farm labourer, and then as a porter in the Brandon Mental Health hospital. Dad’s life long love of singing led him to start a choir at the hospital, which was well-received by patients and staff alike. He then completed training to become a lab and X-ray technician. Dad met and married our mother, Joyce, the youngest daughter of his landlady(Elsie Lee) in Dauphin, Manitoba, Feb 9, 1957. In Dauphin, Dad participated in church choir as well as musical theatre (“Annie Get Your Gun”).

We moved to Yorkton, SK in 1967, where Dad pursued a career hospital administration. In1971, the family moved to Regina, where he worked until his retirement. He was very proud of the Diabetic cross-matching protocols he helped to develop.

In 1999, Mom and Dad followed their son, Kees, to Cranbrook, BC, where they set down new roots and enjoyed a warmer clime in their retirement years.

The church was always very important in his life, sitting on church councils, participating in bible studies and singing in choirs. During their years in Regina, Dad very much enjoyed singing under the direction of Jack Partridge in the choir at Regina First Presbyterian.

To say that Dad was definite, about almost everything, would be an understatement. He didn’t believe in grey, only black and white. Although he sought out solitude, he was always sociable and charismatic in a crowd. Everyone always remembered the tall Dutchman, who walked with purpose.

Funeral service will take place Saturday March 19th, 2016,11am at Knox Presbyterian Church, 2100 - 3rd St. S. Cranbrook.

The family would like to thank staff members of the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

FEBRUARY 17, 1970 - MARCH 8, 2016

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, son, son-in law, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend on March 8, 2016 at Rockyview Hospital in Calgary after succumbing to a sudden illness.

Lane had an avid love of the outdoors all of his life; fishing, hunting, hiking and just being outside. He was a proud family man and family meant everything to him. Those who knew Lane will forever miss his jokes and big heart.

Lane leaves behind the loves of his life; his wife Amanda, daughter Demijalyne, and sons Torrin and Teague

His mother Phyllis Willumeit, Mother and Father-in-law Dwight & Lucille Brown who welcomed him into their family, 4 sisters; Sheila Halisheff (Patrick Wedel) Gail (Keith) Dean, Lorie (Bob) Parsons, Ronda (Ron) Palmer, Sister-in-law Llana Brown (Matt Kelder), nieces Tabatha (Steven) Pelkinen, Amelia Halisheff, Nolla Dean and Harper Desrosiers, Nephews; Richard (Brittany) Salekin, Scott (Brianna) Salekin, Nikolaus Dean, Riely Palmer, Reid Palmer, many aunties, uncles, great nieces & nephews and cousins. All of his brother friends that meant the world to him. Lane was predeceased by his father George Willumeit in 2005.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Cranbrook Alliance Church on Friday, March 18 at 1:00pm.

Anyone who had the privilege of knowing Lane is invited to attend and share their stories.

In Loving Memory of Patricia Jean

Mulholland(nee Durning)

Patricia “Pat” passed away at East Kootenay Regional Hospital on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 after a courageous two year battle with cancer. She was 74.

Pat is survived by her loving daughter Corine (Rick) Armstrong, her greatest joy’s in her life, her three granddaughters Kerisa, Jessica and Natalie Armstrong, her step son Rod Mulholland, brothers Rolland (Betty) and Ronald (Chris). Pat had many nieces and nephews; those close to her heart were nephew Steven Stefanuk (Trish) and children David, Aaron and Dayna and niece Patti Grady (Dave) and children Nicholas Grady, Kyla Brass (Greg) and baby Ethan.

Pat was born in Truro, Nova Scotia in 1942. She moved to Cranbrook in 1960. She began her career with BC Tel as a telephone operator in 1966, where she held a 30 year career retiring in 1996. Pat was a life time member of TWU/Telus Communications Workers Union and was also a member of the Telus Community Ambassadors since 2000; working within the community raising money for different charities. During her retirement Pat volunteered at Key City Theatre for four years. She was also an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #24, and she was always very proud to march in the parades.

Pat had a zest for life and loved to play golf with her dear friend Betty and “in the day” belonged to the Cranbrook Parachute and Skydiving Club. She loved all of her “Telus” girls who all had a special place in her heart, as well as her neighbour Jackie.

Pat was predeceased by her mother Phyllis Durning, father Carl Durning, sister Joyce Stefanuk, sister Geraldine Golden & brother Doug Durning.

A service for Pat will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Monday, March 21, 2016 at 1:00 pm followed by a toast at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #24 in Cranbrook.

Zellstoff Celgar is North America’s newest and largest single line sustainable soft wood kraft pulp mill located in the West Kootenay region of B.C. Celgar is part of Mercer International, which also owns and operates two world class soft wood mills in Germany. All three mills continue to invest in their core assets and investigate new revenue streams in the emerging bio-economy to further improve their long term viability.

We are in need of a Laboratory/Environmental Technologist to work full-time in our Technical Department. Th is position is responsible for the routine testing of all samples in relation to the pulping process and associated environmental permits. Project based work and diversifi cation between the Laboratory and Environmental Departments will be performed on an as needed basis and dependent on qualifi cations and skill sets. Th e tasks of the successful candidate will be to:

1. Carry out routine and special chemical tests for mill process and for quality control.2. Carry out routine environmental tests on effl uent and air as outlined in the permits.3. Interact with operations, environment, and engineering staff to gain information and solve problems.4. Observe data results for trends and anomalies. Be able to demonstrate an understanding how diff erent factors infl uence results and makes adjustments accordingly.5. Participate in routine equipment calibration and ensure that audits/updates of policies and procedures are performed such as required by ISO 14001 EMS and ISO 9001 QMS requirements.6. Prepare and standardize solutions used for analyses throughout the mill.7. Analyze unknown materials, such as scales and deposits, microscope analysis on pulp and asbestos.8. Other technical duties and projects as assigned.

A icon of extreme snowmobiling was one of three people killed in sepa-rate avalanches on the same day in British Columbia.

Daniel Davidoff, 45, who was known as the “Krazy Canadian” after appearing in numerous snowmobil-ing adventure films, died Monday in mountains near his hometown of Cas-tlegar, in south-central B.C.

Davidoff was reported missing late that night after failing to return from a planned solo snowmobiling trip, said regional coroner Larry Marzinzik.

He said a search team found the man’s body on Tuesday morning near College Creek Forestry Rd., and deter-mined he had been struck by a snow-slide.

The coroner said two Alberta men were identified as victims of a separate incident northeast of Kamloops on Monday afternoon, increasing the death toll to 13 from avalanches across Western Canada this season.

Many people have posted online tributes to Davidoff, who is featured in a series of backcountry sledding vid-eos called “Krazy Canadian Adven-tures.”

A description for one film posted on YouTube invites audiences to watch as the “Krazy crew heads out in search of new terrain, over-your-head powder, huge cliff drops and nearly impossible chutes that can only be climbed with huge horsepower turbo sleds and pure adrenaline.”

The creator of a B.C. snowmobiling page on Facebook, titled “Nobody sleds alone,” posted that Davidoff’s death should be a big wake-up call.

“No one should ride alone, regard-less of skill or equipment. Dan was one of the best chute climbers around. Extremely knowledgeable in the back-country and of snow conditions,” the post said. “Yet this happened. No mat-ter how good, how prepared you are Ma Nature takes no prisoners.”

Davidoff was featured in several extreme sport magazines, which tout him as the only two-time winner of the “Xtremey Award” for best perfor-mance in a snowmobile film.

A 2011 interview with Davidoff in Snowest magazine says his “ridicu-lous hillclimbs” and countless first ascents earned him a reputation as one of the top backcountry hillclimb-ers. It says he swore off alcohol and drugs in his youth, allowing him to “live on a natural high.”

Davidoff told the magazine he started riding about 40 years ago with his parents, who would pack him on their sled before he was two years old.

Asked whether he had advice for up-and-coming hillclimbers, Davidoff suggested people “ride smart” during dangerous avalanche days.

“You can always come back and slay the face another day,” he said. “But when the snow is safe and you feel it in your belly go for it. If you don’t feel it, trust your instincts. My worst failures always came when I had a bad feeling and didn’t listen to it.”

On Mar. 9, CanWel Building Mate-rials and Jemi Fibre Corp. announced they have entered a “definitive agree-ment” in which CanWel will acquire all of the issued shares of Jemi Fibre.

Jemi Fibre has roughly 136,000 acres of private timberlands, includ-ing land in the Elk Valley. Jemi Fibre’s equity value is estimated at $11 mil-lion. The purchase agreement with CanWel means that Jemi Fibre will become a subsidiary of CanWel, com-bining Jemi Fibre’s operations with CanWel’s platform.

The acquisition includes all 136,000 acres of timberlands, harvest-ing operations, multiple post peeling facilities, two specialty wood treat-ment plants and one saw mill. The agreement will also create Canada’s only vertically integrated building ma-terials distribution company and was unanimously approved by the board of directors of both companies.

Mike Jenks, the CEO of Jemi Fibre,

entered into a long-term agreement with CanWel, and will continue to lead Jemi Fibre as a subsidiary of Can-Wel.

“We are extremely pleased to be joining the CanWel organization to establish a more stable operating plat-form,” said Jenks in a press release. “Joining CanWel allows us to be part of a larger entity with deep and effec-tive sales and distribution channels, operating expertise and a strong bal-ance sheet. We have worked hard building a highly strategic, valuable and integrated collection of assets and look forward to continuing our com-pany’s vision as part of CanWel.”

CanWel is a Vancouver-based busi-ness, founded in 1989. It’s gained a reputation for being one of Canada’s largest distributors of building materi-als and renovation products. They have a number of distribution centres across the country and in the United States.
