Move throttle lever to half throttle and slowly moveattachment clutch lever to engaged position, Fig. 8.Slowly release clutch/brake pedal.Move throttle lever to fast position.Observe height of cut and readjust as desired (seepage 9).

BEFORE YOU MOVE THE GEARSHIFTLEVER, COME TO A COMPLETE STOP.FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN GEARBOX DAMAGE.

5. Mowing Tips

NOTE: TiRE CHAINS CANNOT BE USED WITH THEMOWER ATTACHED.

a. Mower should be adjusted properly front to backand side to side for good mowing performance. Re-fer to REPAIR AND ADJUSTMENT section (page22).

b. Use the runner on the R.H. side as a guide; theblade cuts approximately an inch (2.54 cm) outsidethe runner (Fig. 8).

c. Drive so that clippings are discharged onto the areathat has been cut. Have the cut area to the right ofthe machine. This will result ina more even distribu-tion of clippings and more uniform cutting.

d. When mowing large areas (Fig. 9), start by turningto the right so that the clippings will discharge awayfrom shrubs, fences, driveways, etc. After two orthree rounds, mow in the opposite direction makingleft hand turns until finished.

e. If grass is extremely tall, it should be mowed twice. The first time cut relatively high; the second time tothe desired height.

f. The left hand side of mower should be used for trim-ming.

g, See Speed Selection Guide.

h. Do not mow tall, dry (brown) grass over 6 inches(15.24 cm) tall. It is a fire hazard.

6. Operating the Tractor on Hills

DO NOT DRIVE UP OR DOWN HILLSWiTH SLOPES GREATER THAN 15°AND DO NOT DRIVE ACROSS ANYSLOPE. REFER TO PAGE 47.

a. Move gearshift lever to "lst" gear before starting upor down hills.

b: AVOID STOPPING OR SHIFTING ON HILLS.

c. if slowing is necessary, move throttle control leverto slower position.

LEAVE ENOUGH ROOM WHEN STOP-PiNG AND STARTING TO ALLOWSLIGHT TRACTOR ROLL DOWNHILLAS CLUTCH/BRAKE PEDAL MOVESTHROUGH CLUTCH POSITION.

d. If stopping is absolutely necessary, push clutch/brake pedal quickly to brake position.

e. To restart tractor movement, make sure tractor is inthe lowest speed range ("1st" Gear) and releaseclutch/brake pedal SLOWLY.

f. Make allturns gradually.

7. Transporting Your Tractor

For pushing or towing your tractor, place gearshift leverin "N" position. Do not tow or push at more than 6 MPH(9.7 KPH).

12

Page 13: Craftsman Garden Tractor Manual 917.254520

To keep yourtractor running better and longer, perform necessary setvioe using the follow=ing maintenance schedule:

WiTH EVERY MOWING

1. Make sure all nuts on bomtsare tight and cotter pins andretainer springs are secure.

2. Observe all safety precautions.

3. Keep tractor well lubricated (refer to page 24).

4. Make sure areas around muffler, engine and mowerdeck are clean and free of debris buildup.

MAINTENANCE

FOR ANY ADJUSTMENTS, iNSPEC-TiON OR MAINTENANCE:

1. PUSH TRACTOR CLUTCH/BRAKEPEDAL COMPLETELY iNTO"BRAKE" POSITION.

2. MOVE GEARSHIFT TO "N" NEUTRALPOSiTiON,

3. PLACE PARKING BRAKE IN "EN-GAGED" POSiTiON. REMOVE FOOTFROM PEDAL.

4. PLACE ATTACHMENT CLUTCHLEVER iN "DISENGAGED" POSi-TION.

5. TURN iGNiTiON KEY TO "OFF" PO-SITION.

6. MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE THEBLADES AND ALL MOVING PARTSHAVE COMPLETELY STOPPED.

7. REMOVE THE iGNiTION KEY.

8. DISCONNECT THE SPARK PLUGWIRE FROM THE SPARK PLUG ANDKEEP WiRE AWAY FROM THE PLUGTO PREVENT iNJURY FROM ACCFDENTAL STARTING. BE CAREFULTO AVOID TOUCHING HOT ENGINEOR MUFFLER COMPONENTS.

26. Storage

3,

4.

Remove mower from tractor for winter storage. Whenmower is to be stored for a period of time, clean it thoroughly, remove all dirt, grease, leaves, etc.Give blades and under-side of housing a good coat of grease or rust preventative.Store in a clean dry area.

A. Fuel System

it is important to prevent gum deposits from forming in es-sential fuel system parts such as the carburetor, fuel filter, fuel hose, or tank during storage. Also, experience indicatesthat alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol ormethanol) can attract moisture which leads to separationand formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can dam-age the fuel system of an engine while in storage. To avoidengine problems, the fuel system should be emptied beforestorage of 30 days or longer.

B. Engine Oil

Drain (with engine warm) and replace with clean engine oil,(See chart page 16).

C. Cylinder1. Remove spark plug.2. Pour one ounce (29.5 ml) of oil through spark
