2.0 LOCATION
Cradle Hill Community Primary School is
located to the north-east of Seaford in
East Sussex, on a 2.4 Hectare site
surrounded by residential development on
all sides.
The British Geological Survey maps of the
area indicate the underlying bedrock to be
chalk of the Newhaven chalk formation,
with no recorded superficial deposits.

The School is a two storey flat roofed primary school of brick cavity wall construction with
decorative panels of knapped flint.
The School was extended in 2010 by the addition of a two storey classroom extension to
the south with a shallow pitched roof. This provided an additional four classrooms. A single
storey extension to the ICT room, and a single storey entrance foyer were also added at
the same time.
In recent years increasing pupil intake has necessitated the addition of a temporary mobile
building to provide the potential for an additional two classrooms.
This proposal is intended to increase the provision of year-round play areas accordingly.
3.0 HISTORY
The proposed new artificial tarmac play area is 5210sqm, to a currently grassed area of playing field.
4.0 AMOUNT

The school playing fields are located to the south of
the existing school buildings and hard play areas.
The 82m x 57.8m artificial turf area contain
markings for a running track, and 7-a-side and 5-a-
side football pitches. This will be connected to the
existing school hard play areas by an additional
470sqm of artificial turf, which will also contain
existing school play equipment (image below left),
slightly relocated from its original position.

6.0 SCALE, DENSITY AND HEIGHT
The site topography slopes from north to south,
with a steeper bank between the School and
playing fields. The proposed artifical turf area is
located at the bottom of the bank, oriented north
to south on the natural slope of the ground.
The artificial turf area will be green in colour, with
running track and football pitch markings in white,
red and blue outlines. Refer to drawing 0275-MBA
-05-00-DR-A-0193-S2-B for details.

TYPICAL SPECIFICATIONTYPICAL SPECIFICATIONTYPICAL SPECIFICATIONTYPICAL SPECIFICATION
Artifical grass is durable with an expected life in
excess of 15 years. It is durable, will not rot or
graze childrens’ skin and is flame retardant to BS
4790 standard. It is fully porous and edges are
secure with no trip hazard. Colours are uv-stable
and will not fade. Pitch markings are intrinsically
coloured and do not require repainting.
Typical excavation 80-100mm.
Stabilizing membrane as a base layer prevents
washing away of fines from the aggregate above.
65-80mm of type 1 limestone compacted as a sub
base. 25mm sharp sand compacted with weed
membrane over, with artificial grass to finish. The
grass is typically polyethylene.

8.0 ACCESS
Due to the steepness of the site topography the
artificial turf play area will not have a level access.
Alternative level access play areas exist nearby.
A Site Waste Management Plan will be produced by
the Contractor prior to commencement.
