CPR and the Red Kayak
Edgewater is a Title I School
Picture and article by Ms.. Riley, Fifth Grade Teacher
Nurse Cathy gave fifth graders an
introduction to CPR training after they
had read, Red Kayak, about a boy
who saved another boy's life. Some
of the students had some knowledge
of CPR, others had just seen it used
on television. Students were given
the opportunity to try CPR on Nurse
Cathy’s Annie. One of the key points
was to call for help first, and then if
the situation is safe, start CPR until
help arrives. Thank you to Nurse
Cathy for making learning fun! The
students enjoyed the lesson. Madeline Kern, 5th grader, looks over “Annie” as learning
about CPR.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS ! Important Dates for October
BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!
School is back in session!
Hip Hip Hooray!
Please, do your part to keep our Edgewater
Elementary students safe. Slow down in the
parking lot! The legal speed is 5 MPH. At
the end of the day, students are excited to
leave and they do not always watch where
they are going. Help us keep them safe by
keeping your eyes open and your speed
limit SLOW in the school parking lot!

Fourth Graders Make Teacher Proud This was an iReady party to celebrate that not one of the 4th grade students got a
flag in either Reading or Math!! This indicates they each took their time and tried
their best. I am so proud of their performance and how focused they were. We
needed to celebrate their accomplishment!!

The Fifth Graders in Mrs. Williamson’s 5th
grade class got a very hands-on experience
when they got to dissect owl pellets!
Sounds gross?!?! What is an owl pellet? An
owl pellet contains indigestible remains of an
owl’s meal. A pellet usually contains hair,
bones, fur and insect shells as bugs and small
rodents are common meals for owls. This owl
pellet dissection allowed students to see
what the owl ate, teaching them about
predators and prey and the food chain.

The 6th graders in Mrs. Williamson’s Social Studies class built their own volcanoes
as they were studying Mount Fuji in Japan. What a great hands on experience as
they watched them explode!

Third graders are learning about physical science this quarter.
Here are some pictures of a lesson that had students exploring
different properties of materials used for clothing, such as texture,
flexibility and absorbency. In the activity, called Mad Hatter,
students use this information to design and build a hat that protects
them from the sun.
