CUDC Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative
The CUDC is an innovative, non-profit urban design practice committed to a sustainable, vibrant and inclusive urban future.
By combining client-based projects, applied research, graduate teaching and advocacy, we expand the ideas, energy, and resources dedicated to making better cities.
Timeline & Process
First opened 1897, the Cleveland Public Library’s South Branch was located on the corner of Clark Avenue and Joseph St (later Twinkie Lane). The building was built for the Library to rent.
The Carnegie South Branch library was designed by Architect Henry D. Whitfield and opened in 1911. A total of 15 Carnegie Libraries were built in the city of Cleveland.

The CUDC, in collaboration with ECG, will articulate community priorities and generate a clearer vision of the library’s role in each target neighborhood.
Recommendations from the Community Vision Plan will support CPL’s efforts to conduct finer grain analysis of the operational costs, interior architectural feasibility, and other financial investments required to commit resources appropriately.
Scope
CPL Community Vision Plan
A report will be produced for each group with recommendations tailored to each branch, which may include:
• Exterior architectural renovations for library branch buildings • Conceptual proposals for reprogramming interior spaces• Outdoor site improvements on library properties • Framework for prioritizing library service locations based on pedestrian, transit, and bicycle accessibility • Streetscape enhancements to improve neighborhood character surrounding branch buildings• Creative ideas for bridging the digital divide • Opportunities for current library services to shift to other neighborhood-based locations • Partnerships with community organizations to achieve residents’ desires
We want a 21st century library—a library that’s a gem.
Address what the community needs now & in the future.
Hope the process will engagepotential partners.

OUR SOUTH BRANCH VISION:
Nearby projects | Train Avenue Greenway Plan
2008The Train Avenue Greenway Plan is centered on maximizing the corridor’s potential as a roadway to accommodate traffic and as a greenway connection to link the five surrounding urban neighborhoods with pedestrian circulation and cultural and environmental amenities, as well as to the Towpath Trail and the Cleveland Bikeway Masterplan.
Nearby projects | W. 25th St. Corridor Initiative
2012The goal of the W 25th St Corridor Initiative was to build on the area’s existing assets, identify and leverage development opportunities along West 25th Street based on current plans and proposed investments, and to catalyze the revitalization of the corridor and its adjacent neighborhoods.
Nearby projects | Clark Avenue TLCI
2014The project will yield a master planning document for the Clark Avenue corridor that links the Towpath Trail at Clark Field with the proposed W. 65th Street multiuse path and Train Avenue Greenway. It recommends streetscape improvements at four main intersections, provides traffic calming strategies targeting key segments, harmonizes multimodal traffic flows, and traffic analysis at W. 25th Street and Clark Avenue.
Nearby projects | La Villa Hispana (Hispanic Village)
OngoingConvened by the Hispanic Alliance inc., (HAi), the concept of the Hispanic Village is to develop a cultural, business, arts, educational and civic center that pays homage to the neighborhood’s Latino history, welcomes new arrivals and generates jobs and tax revenues in Cleveland.
Nearby projects | The Midway
OngoingThe Midway project is a grassroots effort to create center lane bikeways, which could extend 50, 80, even 100 miles over extra-wide Cleveland streets that once carried streetcars. The current vision for the Midway bicycle network indicates a route along Clark Ave.
