Another deadline snuck up on my very quickly. Somehow I always end up doing the thing at the l a s t possible moment every time, so away we go.....

536 UNID I put up my Beverages with the hope of someday hearing F a l k land I s l a n d s and i t may yet come true. Was timing around 1 2 0 meters 12 / 1 9 and came across a f a i r s i g n a l from F a l k l a n d s - 2 3 7 0 so I decided to run down to 5 3 6 and take a look around. Moreover, a glance a t the IDXD column i n DX News revealed th a t o l d e r tube-type communications r e c e i v e r s , mainly C o l l i n s and Hammarlunds, were s t i l l very popular among BCB DXers. Since t h a t time I have acquired and used the HQ180A, the H Q I 5 0 and the HQ100A and have been very pleased with the performance of each of these f i n e old r e c e i v e r s .

What makes the Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s so popular i n the BCB DXer community? The most important reason, I think, i s t h a t a l l of the Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s have adequate to e x c e l l e n t a.m. s e l e c t i v i t y together with good dynamic range. Without both of these f e a t u r e s , a r e c e i v e r w i l l not be a good performer on the BCB. Member comments i n DX News i n d i c a t e that most newer r e c e i v e r s are d e f i c i e n t i n one or both areas. Granted, one can modify some of the newer r e c e i v e r s by i n s t a l l i n g mechanical f i l t e r s (as i n the FRG-7 and FRG - 7 0 0 0 ) or by making SSB s e l e c t i v i t y a v a i l a b l e f o r a.m. rece p t i o n (as i n the SPR-4), but I have been t o l d t h a t these modified r e c e i v e r s are s t i l l no b e t t e r than the HQ180A on the BCB with regard to a.m. s e l e c t i v i t y and dynamic range. The only new r e c e i v e r i n the under $2000 p r i c e range which w i l l outperform the HQ180A i s the Dymek DR33C (or one of i t s v a r i a t i o n s ) , and that i s p r i m a r i l y i n the v i c i n i t y of powerful l o c a l s . Another reason f o r the popularity of Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s i s t h e i r s t a b i l i t y , which i s a r e s u l t of t h e i r s o l i d mechanical co n s t r u c t i o n , temperature compensation i n the HF o s c i l l a t o r , and regulated B+ . Also, Hammarlund's edge d r i v e n tuning, even i n t h e i r inexpensive models, i s su p e r i o r to the s t r i n g driven d i a l s often found i n other inexpensive r e c e i v e r s .

I n the following table we have summarized the primary f e a t u r e s of i n t e r e s t to BCB DXers f o r Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s of the past t h i r t y years or so. These features include the r e c e i v e r type, approximate f i r s t year of production, the BCB tuning r a n g e ( s ) , the primary source of BCB s e l e c t i v i t y , and a d d i t i o n a l remarks of i n t e r e s t to BCB DXers. The s i n g l e conversion Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s a l l have 455 khz I P ' s and the multiple conversion r e c e i v e r s a l l have a 455 khz s t r i p a t some point i n the I F ' s .

I n Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s , s e l e c t i v i t y i s obtained i n one (or two, i n the case of the H Q 1 5 0 ) of three ways--by a f i v e p o s i t i o n 4 5 5 khz c r y s t a l f i l t e r , a 4 5 5 khz Q m u l t i p l i e r , or multiple tuned c i r c u i t s i n a 6 0 khz I F s t r i p . The c r y s t a l f i l t e r has 6 / 6 0 db bandwidths of about 4 . 4 / 1 1 , 3 . 6 / 1 0 . 6 , 2.8/10.2, 1 . 0 / 9 . 4 , and 0 . 5 / 9.2 while the Q m u l t i p l i e r i s continuously v a r i a b l e from about 2.9/26 to 0 . 3/18. The 6 0 khz I F s t r i p i n the HQ180 and HQ180A provides 6 db bandwidths of 6 , 4 , 3 , 2 , 1 , and 0 . 5 khz with a 60/6 db shape f a c t o r of about 2 j / l . We have been unable to find our notes on the SP600JX, but a QST ad gives 6 db bandwidths as 0 . 2 , 0 . 5 , 1 . 3 , 3 , 8, and 1 3 khz.

Popular opinion has i t t h a t steeper s k i r t e d s e l e c t i v i t y i s s u p e r i o r to shallow s k i r t e d s e l e c t i v i t y , and that must be true to some extent 1 otherwise there would be no need f o r highly s e l e c t i v e I P ' s . Thus one would expect the c r y s t a l f i l t e r and 6 0 khz I F to be about equal i n the s e l e c t i v i t y department, and the Q m u l t i p l i e r to be a d i s t a n t t h i r d . However, my ears r a t e the Q m u l t i p l i e r and c r y s t a l f i l t e r about equal and the HQ180A's 6 0 khz I F s l i g h t l y b e t t e r , though not enough to make much d i f f e r e n c e i n hearing most DX. This c o n t r a d i c t s popular opinion, but evidently the Hammarlund Co. thought highly enough of Q m u l t i p l i e r s e l e c t i v i t y to make i t the primary source of s e l e c t i v i t y fo r t h e i r 1958 delux model, the H Q 1 6 0 . And s e v e r a l top veteran DXers use the HQIOO(A) or H Q 2 0 0 .

To a f i r s t approximation, Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s can be placed i n two c a t e g o r i e s , economy and delux. I would c l a s s i f y the HQIOO(A), HQ145(A), and the HQ200 as economy models and the others as delux to a l e s s e r or greater extent. The d i s t i n c t i o n i s not c l e a r cut as can be seen by comparing f e a t u r e s . And which r e c e i v e r may appeal to an i n d i v i d u a l DXer i s often a matter of personal preference. I n my opinion the HQ200 i s perhaps the best economy model because the product detector makes tuning around with the BFO e a s i e r ( i n the HQIOO(A), HQl45(A), and H Q 1 5 0 the RF gain must be c o n t i n u a l l y adjusted while using the BFO to hunt f o r weak DX). I n the delux c l a s s , the HQ180A takes top honors, though some DXers r a t e the S P 6 0 0 J X as an equal on the BCB.

S e v e r a l r e c e i v e r s come i n an "A" model, whose primary d i f f e r e n c from the ordinary model i s that B+ i s r e c t i f i e d by s i l i c o n r e c t i f i e r s r a t h e r than a tube r e c t i f i e r . And many of the r e c e i v e r s had both a clock option and the option of one or more fix e d c r y s t a l tuned p o s i t i o n s i n a s o - c a l l e d "X" model. Thus we f i n d HQ100, HQ100C, HQ100A, HQ100AC, et c . There are also other d i f f e r e n c e s between the older and newer "A" models.

For example, the HQ100 used the Q m u l t i p l i e r i n o s c i l l a t i n g mode as the BFO, while the HQ100A provides a separate BFO. A c r y s t a l c o n t r o l l e d BFO was a v a i l a b l e as an option. The HQ100 s e r i e s a l s o had a 100 khz c r y s t a l c a l i b r a t o r as an option. The HQ180A a l s o had s e v e r a l improvements over the HQ180, such as a v e r n i e r f i n e tuning c o n t r o l of the l a s t conversion over a +3 khz range, f i x e d and v a r i a b l e tuned BFO, and 3 AVC p o s i t i o n s . Generally, the "A" model i s to be preferred because i t i s newer and has improvements over the o r i g i n a l model.

The s l o t (or notch) f i l t e r which i s a v a i l a b l e on some models I s a very u s e f u l feature on some occasions. Adjacent channel s p l a t t e r and TVI can sometimes be reduced s i g n i f i c a n t l y , and annoying hets (when l i s t e n i n g i n the wider s e l e c t i v i t y p o s i t i o n s ) can almost be completely eliminated. The Q m u l t i p l i e r notch on the HQ150 does not seem to be quite as e f f e c t i v e as the p a s s i v e notch, but i s s t i l l u s e f u l . The H Q 1 5 0 , HQ160, and HQ180(A) a l l have a b u i l t - i n 100 khz c r y s t a l c a l i b r a t o r which i s n i c e f o r l o c a t i n g SW s t a t i o n s or c a l i b r a t i n g the bandspread tuning f o r the ham bands. The HQ160 and HQ180(A) have product detectors f o r SSB and CW which i s a l s o u s e f u l when looking f o r weak DX with the BFO. The Haamarlunds without product detectors overload when tuning around with the BFO unless the RF gain i s constantly adjusted. Why t h i s should be I don't know (my H a l l i c r a f t e r s SX110 did not have t h i s problem), but the Hammarlund r e c e i v e r manuals point t h i s out ( I suppose so th a t users w i l l not conclude that t h e i r r e c e i v e r i s operating improperly).

I n a d d i t i o n to the features we have already mentioned, Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s were b u i l t to l a s t both mechanically and e l e c t r i c a l l y . I n the HQ180A, f o r example, I was amazed to find that almost a l l the c a p a c i t o r s were of the superior 3 i l v e r e d mica v a r i e t y . Indeed, i t i s s a i d that one of the reasons the Hammarlund Co. went out of business i s that no one ever wore one of t h e i r r e c e i v e r s out so that eventually the market was saturated.

Perhaps the best way to l o c a t e a Hammarlund r e c e i v e r i s through the p e r i o d i c wanted/for s a l e column which appears now and then i n DX News. I have not seen any complaints about r e c e i v e r s located i n t h i s way. Another option i s to place a wanted ad i n QST. but i n t h i s case I strongly advise prospective buyers to i n s p e c t the r e c e i v e r i n person before g i v i n g any money. P r i c e s are v a r i a b l e , but as a general guideline the following may be u s e f u l : HQIOO(A) $ 1 0 0 - 1 2 5 i H Q I 5 0 $ 1 5 0 - 1 7 5 ) H Q 1 6 0 $175l HQ180 $ 2 0 0 - 2 5 0 | HQ180A $ 3 0 0 - 3 5 0 ) HQ145(A) $ 1 5 0 ) H Q 2 0 0 $ 3 2 5 . The H Q 2 0 0 p r i c e I have quoted i s outrageously high, but i s t y p i c a l because few H Q 2 0 0's were manufactured and i t i s considered a c o l l e c t o r ' s item. I n terms of what you get, i t i s hardly worth more than about $ 1 2 5 - 1 5 0 .

There are s e v e r a l ways to improve the l e s s expensive models. Since a l l have a 4 5 5 khz I F a t come point i n the conversion, a l l can be f i t t e d with a 4 5 5 khz mechanical f i l t e r . Chuck Hutton has modified h i s H Q 1 2 9 X with two C o i l i n s 2 . 1 khz mechanical f i l t e r s and reports t h a t i t outperforms h i s R390A. Mechanical f i l t e r s are not cheap ( $ 2 5 to $ 1 5 0 or more), but i n s t a l l i n g one or two 2 . 1 khz f i l t e r s i n any of the Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s i s probably the e a s i e s t way to get a s t a t e of the a r t r e c e i v e r f o r the BCB. Another way to improve the performance of Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s (except the HQ180(A)) i s to add a Hammarlund HC-10 converter. The HC-10 i s the HQ18o(A) I F / detector/audio and plugs i n t o the l a s t I F tubs socket (on any tube r e c e i v e r with a 4 5 0 - 5 0 0 khz I F ) . To my knowledge, none of the BCB DXers have used the HC-10, but at $ 5 0 - $ 7 0 on the used equipment market the HC-10 would seem to be a very u s e f u l a d d i t i o n to an inexpensive r e c e i v e r .

How do the Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s compare to the other older tube type models? I n my opinion, very w e l l . The H a l l i c r a f t e r s SX100 and updated SX122 are c l o s e i n performance to the HQ180(A). But the l e s s expensive H a l l i c r a f t e r s r e c e i v e r s do not have comparable s e l e c t i v i t y to t h e i r Hammarlund counterparts. For example, the SX110 or i t s older equivalent have a two p o s i t i o n c r y s t a l f i l t e r which i s no match f o r the Hammarlund f i v e p o s i t i o n

Page 7: CPC TESTS THEY JOINED LOOK INSIDE STATIC …nationalradioclub.org/DXNs/V47/DXN47_12.pdfWUNA KXRX WARV WHVL Dallas, NC wants t o g fulltime with 1000/500 w. (OA-nights). Stirling, NJ

c r y s t a l f i l t e r . Also, the top of the l i n e SX100 and SX122 do not have 4 5 5 khz I F ' s , so adding mechanical f i l t e r s to them i s out of the question. National r e c e i v e r s are so i n f r e q u e n t l y used by BCB DXers and we know so l i t t l e about them that we are unable to make any knowledgable comparisons with them. The only r e c e i v e r s that s i g n i f i c a n t l y outperform the Hammarlunds are the C o l l i n s . The most frequently used C o l l i n s are the R388 and R390A. Neither of these i s s i g n i f i c a n t l y b e t t e r than the HQ180(A) i n the s e l e c t i v i t y department. T h e i r advantages are p r i m a r i l y b e t t e r dynamic range, b e t t e r s h i e l d i n g (the Hammarlunds a l l e x h i b i t some pick up of strong l o c a l s with no antenna connected), and d i g i t a l tuning. However, they are much heavier than the HQ180(A) and more d i f f i c u l t to r e p a i r , as w e l l as being more expensive.

I n a short survey a r t i c l e i t i s impossible to cover a l l aspects of Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s w e l l . An e x c e l l e n t source of information about r e c e i v e r s i s The N.R.C. Receiver Reference Manual which contains, among other things, reviews of the SPR - 4 , R388, R390A, S X 1 2 2 A , and a capsule review of the Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s . The NRC r e p r i n t RR10, "HQ180 S e r i e s Receivers", i s an i n depth review of the HQ180 and HQ180A with user comments. Beyond t h i s , CQ and QST have reviewed most r e c e i v e r s a t one time or another, and advertizements i n C<} and QST are another good source of information. The following i s a l i s t of references I have come across: "The Hammarlund H Q 1 2 9 X . For those contemplating modifications, NKC r e p r i n t R8 "Redoing Older Receivers" i s a good s t a r t i n g point.

I n conclusion, I would say to those seeking an outstanding r e c e i v e r f o r the BCB a t a moderate p r i c e they should look no f u r t h e r than the HQ180A. The other Hammarlund r e c e i v e r s are good to outstanding BCB r i g s , but none of the others have as many d e s i r a b l e features as the HQ180A. I n addition to being an e x c e l l e n t BCB r i g the HQ180A i s a very good general purpose Ham/SWL r i g . I f i t i s not as s e n s i t i v e above 10 mhz as you would l i k e , b u i l d or buy a preamp for the high bands -I f you want more tuning accuracy, buy and i n s t a l l a d i g i t a l d i s p l a y , say the KRS DD-2 from Radio West, 341? According to member comments, he i s a genius at r e p a i r i n g and overhauling Hammarlunds.

This a r t i c l e was prepared from information i n many of the a r t i c l e s c i t e d above, personal experience, Hammarlund r e c e i v e r manuals (be sure to get one i f you buy a Hammarlund r e c e i v e r ) , and comments from s e v e r a l i n d i v i d u a l s . S p e c i a l thanks to Dan L e s t e r and Stan Stanbury f o r t h e i r comments on the r a r e HQ200.

Addenda To avoid any missunderstanding of the s e l e c t i v i t y i s s u e s , I should add that I do most of my s p l i t l i s t e n i n g i n the 2 khz bandwidth p o s i t i o n of the HQ180A. Most of the time the 3 khz bandwidth would s u f f i c e , but the 2 khz bandwidth i s u s u a l l y s l i g h t l y c l e a r e r and o c c a s i o n a l l y the l k h z p o s i t i o n i s needed. My notes i n d i c a t e that the 1 9 5 2 Radio Amateur's Handbook has an advertizement which summarizes the SP600JX's features. Recent s e l l i n g p r i c e s f o r the S P 6 0 0 J X are $ 1 7 5 - $ 2 2 5 .
