What and where to classify; neighbouring fields
The aim of classification
▪ Retrieval of technical subject-matter (IPC-Guide VIII.75.)
▪ When classifying, keep in mind how a search examiner searches,
i.e. what is useful for search and what is not.
▪ Often, the invention information relates only to a particular field of
use, and the application-oriented places are intended to cover
completely the classification of such matter.
▪ The function-oriented places embrace a wider concept in which the
constructional or functional characteristics of a subject are applicable
to more than one field of use, or in which the application to a
particular field of use is not considered invention information (IPC-
Guide).

What and where to classify; neighbouring fields
The main kinds of search
▪ Figure-feature search,
i.e. a search of features shown in figures
▪ Text-feature search,
i.e. a search for written features
When flipping through documents, in F01P, the search examiner often
has to deal with very schematic figures, especially in F01P7-Control,
i.e. text search and classification is very important.

European Patent Office 11
Specific terminology
▪ • "air" also includes other gaseous cooling fluids;
▪ • "liquid cooling" also includes cooling where liquid is used as the
heat transferring fluid between parts to be cooled and the
▪ air, e.g. using radiators;
▪ • "air cooling" means direct air cooling and thus excludes indirect air
cooling occurring in liquid cooling systems as explained herefore;
▪ • "cooling-air" includes directly or indirectly acting cooling-air.

US2011114040A spacer (14) fitted inside a water jacket (13) which is
formed to surround peripheries of cylinder bores (12a)
in a cylinder block (11) of an internal combustion
engine includes: a spacer main body part (14a)
partitioning the water jacket (13) into an upper cooling
water passage (13c) and a lower cooling water
passage (13d); and a cooling water outlet and inlet
port part (14b, 14c) continuing to the spacer main
body part (14a).
F01P2003/021/CCA
US2006065218The engine includes cooling oil jackets surrounding the
spark plugs in the cylinder head, a thermostat attached
to the front surface of the crankcase independently of
an oil filter, and an oil temperature sensor disposed on
a rear face of the cylinder block above the crankcase in
an oil supply path formed on the cylinder rear face for
supplying oil to the oil jackets
F01P2003/022/CCA
US2011271916 The internal combustion engine has a cylinder, a
cylinder head and a liquid cooling system, where two
coolant jackets (2,8) are integrated in the cylinder
head. One coolant jacket is arranged at the outer side
of the cylinder head, where another coolant jacket is
arranged at the inner side of the cylinder head. The
outer side coolant jacket belongs a cooling water
circuit, where the inner side coolant jacket belongs
an *' oil circuit.
F01P2003/024/CCA
DE102010045217 The circuit (1) has a cylinder crankcase
(3) provided with two cylinder blocks (3a) and
associated with cylinder heads (4). The cylinder
crankcase and the cylinder heads run parallel to each
other. A cylinder head partial circuit (6) is acted upon
a coolant pump (7) with coolant.
F01P2003/027/CCA
US2011265742
F01P2003/028/CCA
US2002014212 An effective and even cooing of the internal
combustion engine is ensured in such a way that
the oil cooler is integrated in the cooling ribs of the
internal combustion engine and two mutually
separated oil conduit systems are provided in the
cylinder head, namely a lubricating oil system and
a cooing oil system
