Be appropriate (won’t be marked otherwise – use your common sense) Fill up your head and background with your favourite quotes, song lyrics, movies, books, ideas,

philosophy of life, worries, hopes, dreams, fears, pastimes, politics, and ideology – surprize me!

For the verbal:

Here we go……the “Let me get to know about you” writing assignment……

As your English teacher, I want to accomplish two things with this assignment:

Get a sense of who you are, what makes you tick…… Get a sense of your writing: mechanics, structure, style, purpose etc.

So, please consider one or a few of these prompts combined.

What makes you unique? What object is representative of you and why? What is your favourite quote or proverb and why? What song lyrics capture your philosophy of life and why? What scares you most about the world/school/ life? AND what advice would give to someone

about conquering his/her fears – what message of hope do you have for those fears? New Year/semester! New goals, hopes, passions? Tell me. What character from literature, the movies, or a video game do you most admire and why? Other than right now – what era (century or decade) would you want to live and why? English 11 terrifies me because……. English 11 is my opportunity to……. I want to get ________

out of English 11…….. (tackle all three please) If your life was a triangle with what is most important to you at the top and what is least

important at the bottom, what would they be? What’s in the middle? Something you could add to this list? Tell me!

The particulars:

Have a title that reflects your chosen prompt (Name, block and date would be good too) Weave into your writing at least one rhetorical device which gives your writing a sense of style

and voice:o Simile, metaphor, personificationo Symbol – concrete object that represents something abstracto Irony, or satire in the service of a point you want to makeo Analogy (a story within your text that illustrates a point you are making)o Descriptive elements – I want to be inspired, transported, entertained – no boring

words please (such as: like, thing, nice, good, etc.) Have a flow to your writing with a clear sense of a beginning, middle and end

Pay some attention to the mechanics of your writing:o Spellingo Proper punctuation, capitalization, use of apostropheso Sentence structure – avoid run-ons and fragments

Make sure your piece is around 500 words, word processed (one page 1.5 spacing, 11 font). The image goes on the same page at the top.
