Economics of staying at home:

• Relocating to a typical assisted living facility can cost upwards of $40,000 per year, plus the cost of moving.

Walk up to your front door…1. Are exterior pathways, porches and

doorways well lit?2. Are the walkways in good condition?3. Are there handrails on both sides of the

steps?4. Are the doorknobs easy to use?5. Are you able to identify who is at the

front door without opening it?


Walk up to your front door…6. Does the threshold of the door

contribute to trips or falls?7. Are there scatter or throw rugs near the

doorways that may cause tripping or slipping?

8. Is there any broken or uneven pavement on walkways or the driveway?

9. Are any shrub or tree roots sticking out of the ground?

device?8. Are the countertops and sink easy to

use when you're seated?9. Do you use wax on your floors?


Now… Do the same walk-through but this

Do it with your walker or a wheelchair.


Walk to your bathroom…1. Are the sink, bathtub and shower

faucets easy to use?2. Are the floor surfaces slippery?3. Are there grab bars in the

bathtub/shower and toilet areas?4. Is a low toilet seat making it hard to

stand up?5. Are there exposed hot water pipes

beneath the sink?


Walk to your bathroom…6. Do you have a handheld or adjustable-

height shower head?7. Is the hot water heater set at 140°?8. Is there good lighting?9. Are small electrical appliances

(including hairdryers, curling irons, shavers) plugged in when not in use?


Bathroom safety ideas…Easy DIY:• For bottom of tub or shower, peel & stick

texture strips• Motion sensing night light• Be sure all light bulbs are working,

replace with brighter fluorescent or LED bulbs

• Paint walls with contrasting color to floor
