Organic comfort

NATURAL LATEX RUBBERSUPERIOR MATTRESS MATERIAL In 1931,

the world’s first latex mattress was made. The features of not having to be flipped, staying fresh, responsive, supportive and keeping its shape made the mattress a huge success.

PROVEN TO PROVIDE HEALTHIER SLEEP The year 1954, latex foam is proven to contain

exceptionally high anti-bacterial properties by Dr. Theo Lammers from the Institute

of Hygiene Gutenburg University, making it the hygienic ideal for

mattresses, superior to all other materials: unsurpassed in comfort and support, exceptional durability, stays cool, and is the healthiest choice due to its high anti-bacterial and allergy-free properties.

IDEAL FOR ASTHMA AND RESPIRATORY DISORDERS Further work in 1956 by Drs Fuchs & Gronemeyer at the Asthma Clinic, concluded, “the advantages of latex foam mattresses have been outlined by health and surgical authorities and the bacteriostatic (capable of killing bacteria), as well as fungus and mite resistant properties of latex material found by Lammers is confirmed.”

Throughout the decades, the cost of this premium material made it more expensive for manufacturers to produce and consumers often didn’t want to buy this higher priced option, thus latex mattresses were soon overshadowed by beds made with synthetic batting and petroleum foams placed over innerspring coils.

BOUNCING BACK In 1991, our flagship mail order catalog, Tomorrow’s World, was one of the first companies to offer a selection of natural latex mattresses made with organic cotton and wool. Consumers are beginning to understand the value equation of their purchases and realize that investing in a quality latex mattress will pay for itself many times over the lifetime of use it provides.

DECEPTIONS The popularity of latex mattresses comes with a price to consumer research. Many “so called” latex mattresses often only contain a small layer surrounded by foam and/or coils. Some “natural” latex really only contains a percentage of natural. Even materials such as “organic cotton” are being advertised on certain mattresses when in fact the fabric is blended with synthetic polyester. In this era of popularity for latex mattresses it’s imperative for the consumer to do thorough research so they can be 100% sure they are getting the product they think they are purchasing.

HOW OUR NATURAL LATEX RUBBER IS MADE Rubber tapping is the process by which rubber is harvested. An incision is made in the bark of a rubber tree, which cuts through the bark so the latex drips into a collecting cup. The work is done at night or in the early morning before the day’s temperature rises, so the latex will drip longer before coagulating and sealing the cut. Rubber tapping does not hurt the trees and it’s a great way for the indigenous people to make a living using their natural resources. Each rubber tree weeps about one tablespoon of latex daily and a Queen

ORGANIC COTTON - Our GOTS-certified organic cotton fabric is milled in the USA and is featured on all our mattresses. This luxurious matelasse stretch knit fabric MOVES with your body and the natural latex mattress. Our organic cotton fabric enhances the natural latex underneath, so you receive all the benefits of a CozyPure Sleep.

PURE WOOL - We specifically use a small amount of wool quilting in our covers so you can get close to the comfort of our latex yet still receive the wonderful benefits of wool. Combined with our soft organic cotton, both fibers naturally BREATHE - just like we do - to resonate with your body and provide the best regulation during sleep.

NATURAL LATEX - We source our natural latex direct from the beautiful island of Sri Lanka where you’ll find the highest quality rubber in the world. Natural latex rubber is proven to be the very best component in mattresses and can last for decades. Our natural latex uses NO fillers, NO foams, NO lies.

size 6” core needs the daily output of 2500 trees, spread over 12 acres of rubber plantation, providing a living to eight rubber tappers. Interestingly, these rubber trees account for the removal of 143 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the environment every year.

Natural latex rubber is proven to be the very best component used for mattress support, comfort,

durability, as well as offering a healthier sleeping environment. It’s naturally dust mite resistant; it’s breathable so you don’t sleep hot; it’s resiliency is known to last for decades; it’s responsive support

offers comfort and proper alignment.

Our natural latex is made from 100% natural rubber direct from the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, known for the finest rubber plantations in the world. No synthetic latex. No poly foams. No fillers. No lies.

THERAPEUTIC PURE WOOLTEMPERATURE REGULATING AND HELPS KEEPS

YOU DRY Wool provides a temperature controlled sleep environment that’s perfect for your body. No matter the season, wool is able to maintain the perfect body temperature. In the winter wool produces warmth without overheating and has the ability to keep you comfortable and in the summer you don’t overheat because of its moisture wicking process.

The average sleeper looses a pint of moisture every night and wool is able to absorb this moisture without feeling damp. The cells of wool fibers are able to quickly and efficiently absorb and evaporate moisture. Due to the natural crinkled structure, wool has an enormous capacity to store air. This property allows your skin to breathe as you sleep surrounded by natural, dry warmth - without the clammy feeling associated with synthetic materials. You’ll wake up well rested and refreshed. It’s the perfect ingredient for your mattress and comforter.

CALMS THE HEART FOR DEEPER SLEEP Studies show that the heart rate is significantly lower when sleeping with wool. Feathers, down, polyester and other synthetic fibers had no effect on (and sometimes increased) the sleeper’s heart rate. A lowered heart rate induces a deep, relaxed sleep.

NO DUST-MITES, MOLD OR MILDEW People with allergies are able to use wool products because it is resistant to bacteria, mold and mildew which can trigger allergic reactions. Wool is also dust-mite resistant because it

evaporates moisture rapidly and dust-mites can’t thrive in a dry environment. Our wool is not chemically acid-washed, and it’s also completely covered in organic cotton, so even people with wool allergies can enjoy sleeping with a CozyPure® mattress and comforter.

NATURALLY FLAME RESISTANT Using ONLY WOOL we passed Federal Regulation PART 1633 - Standard for the Flammability (Open Flame) of Mattresses - so we don’t need to add any FR barrier or chemicals.

Because healthy bedding materials are becoming more popular, many manufacturers are now adding wool as a marketing tool - but that doesn’t mean the wool is the actual fire barrier. In most cases you’ll find they add wool under the fire barrier just so they can “claim wool” simply to sell their mattress.

OUR MATERIALS ARE NATURAL, RENEWABLE AND SUSTAINABLE

ORGANIC COTTONOrganic Cotton means the crop is organically-grown and

processed from start to finish. From the soil and seed to the growing and harvesting - no chemical sprays, insecticides or pesticides are introduced. During the final stage of processing and production, no chemical treatments are administered.

Most consumers are unaware of the abundant textiles available to manufacture “green goods” and the opportunity to market products deceptively, otherwise known as “greenwashing”. A perfect example is mattress ticking, the fabric used on the outside of a mattress.

Many mattresses offered today are marketed with “organic cotton” or “bamboo” fabric, however they neglect to tell you the content breakdown. Mattress knits are comprised of three components: the face (top side), the fill (inside), the back (bottom). The majority of “organic cotton” knits feature organic cotton only on the top side. That is, the inside and bottom of the knit is made from polyester. These fabrics are advertised misleadingly to the consumer as “organic cotton” even though only 33% of the fabric is really organic.

CozyPure® never uses polyester blends in our fabrics. Adding synthetics would defeat our purpose of creating a natural sleep system that breathes. Man-made synthetic materials can trap heat and moisture which won’t allow breathability of the fabric. We also don’t process our organic cotton with chemical finishes such as formaldehyde, which is often used on wrinkle-resistant sheets.

The renovation of CozyPure’s new showroom and workshop was an amazing process. And for those who didn’t get to witness the transformation, it’s hard to believe that the location where organic comfort is “made fresh daily” could’ve ever come together so well and so quickly.

Cheryl Hahn, owner of CozyPure, felt a kinship and synergy with the old place on Granby street from the second she saw it. When it became available, she jumped at the chance to make the century-old building vital again and the new home of CozyPure. But to do that, the building had to be stripped down and made over from head to toe.

To be successful with the monumental task of converting the large historic structure, Cheryl needed to humanize the building to keep herself going. If it had a name, Hahn could lovingly nurse it back to it’s natural beauty. Her first thought was to name the building after her dear departed mother, Margaret. Add that to her relationship with the building having so many similarities to the classic Rod Stewart song, “Maggie May,” the name was quite evident.

In the painstaking days of gutting, repairing and refreshing the old building, even the sub-contractors began to refer to the old brick structure by the name “Maggie.” Her spirit began to enchant the entire crew, each one becoming dedicated to restoring the old gal to her glory days.

Within only two short months, Hahn, with the help of her crew, was able to totally transform Maggie

May. The interior of the office and showroom now feature a brick-exposed industrial-chic design and the enchanting wood-beamed workshop was upgraded with HVAC to provide a comfortable climate for our artisans.

Hand-built historic building now the home of handmade organic bedding

Wake Up,Maggie!

One of the last stages of Maggie May’s transformation was giving her a touch of blush on her facade. Sure, a nice new coat of paint is fine. But that’s like putting on foundation makeup without adding some color and personality.

Enter John Hickey, local mural artist and a hidden legend here in the Hampton Roads area. Hickey has painted a number of stunning murals all over Norfolk, so when Hickey was approached to do a mural on CozyPure’s new Granby Street location, the finished piece would certainly help in the revival of an area that is starting to show fresh and exciting renovated buildings.

The concept of the mural dubbed “Working Hands” is the principle of handmade craftsmanship, a quality that is vital and unique to CozyPure, as well as many other surrounding businesses in the “Historic Warehouse District” of Norfolk. Hickey painted the hands to look as though they’re inside an open door of the building, complete with a ribbon of fabric spilling out and gliding down Maggie’s majestic facade. It’s a captivating representation of fine art in the old spirit of handcrafted showmanship. In fact, “Working Hands” represents the hands of Hickey himself, who through his art has the ability to transform a neighborhood and help unify the community and businesses, simply with a building’s wall of canvas.

Hickey also hand painted lettering, in old-world style, as a nod of respect to this beautiful building that’s over 100 years old. We’re confident that Maggie May is smiling with her beautiful new mural. Come see “Working Hands” both inside and out at 2308 Granby Street in Norfolk near Ghent. — by Troy Cooper

The renovation of CozyPure’s new home at 2308 Granby Street in Norfolk, Va. was a multi-phase accomplishment. Layers and layers of old ceiling and floor had to be removed to find the building’s original majesty. This photo taken just over the creative director Troy Cooper’s desk shows the current office space, complete with stylish exposed brick and other turn-of-the century charms.

Making it in AmericaA message from Cheryl Hahn, CozyPure founder

Once upon a time, America was a strong leader in the manufacturing industry, which created millions of jobs across the country. Outsourcing overseas for cheap labor gained popularity in the late 1970’s and has accelerated over the past few decades to the point where almost every product we buy is made in another country. But there are a few companies determined to keep it made in the USA. CozyPure® is one of them.

Centuries ago, nearly everything was made by hand. It’s almost a lost art to cut fabric with scissors, hand-tuft with needles and fill pillows by hand, when all this can be done by automated machines that mass produce hundreds of products a day. Our “Back-of-House” artisans craft products made-to-order, just for you. Their skilled workmanship using natural materials is a distinct process, so each item is unique.

We take pride in our quality American-made organic comfort products, but we also offer exceptional customer care to back it up, which is just as important. Our “Front-of-House” team is here to service you at all times, not only before the sale but after it too. Your questions and concerns are a phone call away. We’re always here to answer questions, provide knowledge and assist you. Your satisfaction is our number one priority... Today, tomorrow or five years from now.

Latex allergies? No worries. The allergic proteins in latex are

completely removed when made into a soft natural rubber foam.

Undercover KILLING US SOFTLY

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT... AND SLEEP.Besides food, our mattress and bedding are probably

the most intimate products we use everyday. Not only are we up-close and personal with our sleep products, keep in mind we spend a 1/3 of our lives sleeping.

Collectively that’s a solid four months every year we spend in bed. Because we rarely give it thought, most of us are more concerned about the food we put in our mouth rather than the pillow we have up against our nose for eight hours every night.

MEMORY FOAMMemory foam, such as Tempurpedic, is a petroleum-

based polyurethane with additional unregulated “proprietary” chemicals which increase the viscosity and density of the foam. The proprietary formula is what “sucks you in” as you lay helplessly trapped inside a squishy sink-hole of toxic chemicals.

A class action suit has been filed in California courts alleging that Tempurpedic’s memory foam mattresses contain harmful VOCs. They believe the company has minimized the problem when advertising their products by stating that the odors will dissipate and that products are VOC-free, when formaldehyde and other odors may continue to be released for months.

To date, there’s been no resolution; the suit is still active.

The claim on the attorney’s website states that formaldehyde, a strong VOC and

known carcinogen, has been identified in laboratory testing of Tempurpedic products.

Manufacturers are not legally required to disclose the chemicals in mattresses.

Memory foam can help reduce pressure points which is why it’s a popular choice for mattresses and pillows, however its low resiliency doesn’t offer total full-body support for your entire body and heavier parts of your body will sink in more. The deeper you sink into the mattress, the more likely you’ll “sleep hot.” It should also be noted that the temperature of your bedroom can lead to the mattress becoming “too soft” or “too hard.” Most of these attributes are contributed directly to the chemical composition used to make memory foam.

DON’T BE FOOLED BY SOY-FOAMConsumer awareness is growing and chemical

manufacturers are developing marketing gimmicks which fool consumers into believing certain foams are safer, healthier and eco-friendly.

Take for example soy-based or bio-based foam. What they don’t tell you is that the foam contains very little soy. In fact, it is more accurate to call it polyurethane based foam with just a little soy added for marketing purposes. In fact, to date, the highest percentage of soy used in foam is only 20%. Since polyurethane foam is made by combining two main ingredients — a polyol and an isocyanate — in approximate equal parts, “20% soy based” translates to a mere 10% of the foam’s total volume and 90% as polyurethane.

POLYURETHANE FOAMSAND FIRE RETARDANTSLarge amounts of unregulated chemicals can be found

in almost all synthetic foams (including soy-foam). The basic ingredients include polyols, isocyanates, blowing agents, and other additives including flame retardants. Although PBDEs have finally been phased out due to documented health hazards, new alternative chemicals are now being used in their place during the manufacture of flexible polyurethane foam. In addition, many fabrics are coated with both stain-resistant chemicals and flame retardant chemicals.

According to a recent EPA report released in August of 2015, most of these newer chemicals still have “limited

data” with notes such as: “There is uncertainty due to lack of data for this substance. XYZ is estimated to have uncertain potential for carcinogenicity based on analogy to a closely related confidential analog and professional judgment; carcinogenic effects cannot be ruled out.”

Most exposure to flame retardants occurs after the chemicals migrate out of a product’s foam and settle into household dust, which then enter our bodies. The chemicals are constantly dispersing into the air, then settling. Exposure comes primarily from ingesting contaminated dust.

“Additive flame retardants are expected to be more mobile during the consumer use phase,

and have been widely identified in air and house dust, supporting the idea that additive flame retardants can mobilize from a plastic or foam into the local micro-environment.”

-EPA Report 8/15

Mattresses made with foams that have the CertiPUR® label are marketed as a safer foam with a certification from “The Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam”. The Alliance is made up of foam manufacturers who certify their own foam to their own standards.

One such standard is the foam is made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants. PBDEs (Polybrominated diphenyl ethers) have been phased out and Chlorinated Tris is banned in many states. The chemical industry is replacing the banned FRs with newer, untested chemicals.

According to Heather Stapleton, Ph.D. in environmental chemistry and authority figure on the toxicity of flame retardants, “The (Certipur) label... is simply an advertisement for the Certipur program. This is a program developed by US polyurethane foam manufacturers to demonstrate environmental stewardship. It means that the foam used in that product has been tested for several known toxins including VOCs, metals and a few flame retardants. But the product can certainly still contain a flame

People assume that if something’s for sale, it’s safe. Unfortunately, this is not true. The Human Experiment, a documentary narrated by Sean Penn, investigates consumer products available for sale which we think are safe, yet contain thousands of unregulated chemicals.

Did you know that we’re exposed to over 80,000 potentially harmful synthetic chemicals every day? Of the almost 85,000 chemicals only 200 have been tested for safety.

Meanwhile, every year over 1,000 new chemicals are registered for use, yet unregulated for safety. Once you learn about some of the more shocking ingredients, you can start to phase them out by switching to safer alternative products. One of the easiest ways to do this is simply understanding the ingredients; if you don’t know a word listed on the label then it’s likely a chemical ingredient that you should research and find out if you’re comfortable using it.

We’re not saying all chemicals are bad. In fact some can help enhance our lives such as medications and certain plastics (eyeglasses, equipment, appliances, etc). However, since chemicals are virtually everywhere they’re basically impossible to eliminate completely which is why we suggest making your bedroom a sanctuary. It’s one place you really can choose safe, natural products to envelope yourself in a healthy healing space for eight hours and greatly reduce your chemical exposure.

“The Human Experiment lifts the veil on the shocking reality that thousands of untested, unregulated chemicals are in our everyday products, in our homes, and in our bodies.”

THE HUMANEXPERIMENT

retardant and have the Certipur label. There are many (FR chemicals) in use on the market today that are not tested in the Certipur program and for which we have concerns about health effects (for example, Firemaster 550, etc.).”

“We don’t know as much about the health effects of replacement flame retardants,” according to Stapleton, “but few studies have shown that these new chemicals may also disrupt hormone function.”

SYNTHETIC LATEX, BLENDED LATEX, NATURAL LATEXSynthetic latex (SBR) is derived mainly from the

industrial chemicals styrene and butadiene. These copolymers are emulsified, and other chemical agents are added as stabilizers for polymerization and vulcanization.

Natural latex rubber (NR) is derived using 100% of the milk from the hevea brasiliensis rubber tree. Additional ingredients (less than 5% combined) include soda ash, zinc and soap which are whipped together with the rubber

milk. The frothy mixture is then poured into a pan and baked — just like a cake!

Most latex offered in mattresses is either 100% synthetic or a blend of 80% synthetic and 20% natural. Manufacturers, like CozyPure(R), who specialize in organic and natural materials offer only 100% natural latex rubber mattresses, with no synthetics, fillers or blends.

Trying to determine what kind of latex is in a mattress can be very difficult for consumers because of confusing wording or phrasing. For instance terms like “pure latex” many times refers to 100% synthetic man-made chemical latex because it is pure (solid) latex. Terms such as “made from natural latex” often refers to blended versions that have only a portion of natural, hence they can say “made from” even if it’s only made from 20% natural. Confusing right? We agree. And trying to find the correct answers, can be challenging.

Unfortunately most salespeople, especially in larger retail stores, often don’t know the difference so there’s a huge probability you’ll receive inaccurate information (we know because we’ve visited most of them). Be aware also, that many retailers will label a mattress as being a latex mattress even if it has as little as 1” of latex in its construction. If you’re not sure about the latex in a certain mattress, ask to see the certifications or check the law label. To find mattresses made only from solid 100% natural latex rubber, the best bet is a smaller manufacturer who specializes in using only natural materials, like CozyPure®.

WHY CHOOSE NATURAL LATEX RUBBER?Read about the benefits on page 2

CozyPure® doesn’t use polyurethane foam, soy-foam, memory foam, chemical flame retardants or treated fabrics. Our natural rubber latex is wrapped inside organic cotton quilted to wool which passes the Open Flame Federal Regulation. Wool self-extinguishes and doesn’t burn black toxic smoke when ignited. Why toss and turn all night worrying about unknown chemicals and flame retardants when you can sleep soundly on a mattress made exclusively from organic and natural ingredients?

Real natural latex rubber will have labels showing contents and certifications. For example, CozyPure latex, shown here, featured the GOLS certificate (Global Organic Latex Standard).

Slumber PartyCozyPure has been in business for 25 years. In that

time, it has gained quite a following of loyal customers across the country. With a product so durable, sustainable and amazingly comfortable, a lot of praise has been offered from our customers. Being such informed consumers, many CozyPure customers are curious how organic comfort is made fresh daily, right here in the CozyPure workshop in Norfolk, Virginia.

So, to say thank you to a few of our local customers and to demystify the CozyPure process, we hosted our first Slumber Party. On a cool evening on Oct. 8, 2015, guests were treated to an evening of refreshments, fun and an intimate look at the CozyPure organic bed making process.

Over the course of the evening, our guests shared their stories of how they arrived at selecting their CozyPure sleep system. Many had tried so many others before coming to CozyPure. Guest Heather Mayes, after having purchased a mattress from another manufacturer, said her previous mattress, felt uncomfortable, “like sleeping on a marshmallow.” Since getting her CozyPure organic sleep system a few months ago, Heather has enjoyed more restful sleep in total comfort.

Another guest, Gaye Pietrocola, has been a CozyPure organic bed owner for years. Among the other health benefits of sleeping on her CozyPure mattress, she and her husband Greg really appreciate the ease of being able to adjust the firmness of their mattress anytime they need to. “We just unzip it and adjust it,” she said, “it’s fun.”

As CozyPure owner Cheryl Hahn guided the excited guests through the workshop, they got a chance to see the entire process before their eyes. Having nothing to hide in the CozyPure bed making process, guests got to see and feel the materials—organic cotton, therapeutic wool, and natural organic latex. Hahn explained that the milk of the rubber tree is slowly extracted from thousands of rubber trees on the plantations of Sri Lanka, each mattress requiring roughly 2,500 teaspoons of pure rubber milk to make one mattress. She also explained to intrigued guests how the milk

is then prepared and baked in a mold, kind of like your favorite cake. No filler. No foams. No lies. Just pure organic comfort.

Guests also got to feel the soft and luxurious LaNoodles found in CozyPure’s best selling LaNoodle pillows. These pure latex noodles are leftovers from other pure latex products, excellently repurposed into pillows that are amazingly comfortable, resilient and sustainable.

At the conclusion of the first CozyPure Cuddle Up Club Slumber Party, guests played pin the tail on the lamb. The winner, Cindy Lee Hall, received a new CozyPure wool Euro Pillow. Each guest also received gift bags with travel-size LaNoodle Pillows and other goodies.

More importantly, what we at CozyPure hope our Slumber Party guests and our everyday customers walk away with is an understanding that CozyPure is genuinely committed to providing its customers with a quality handmade organic product, free of toxins and harmful chemicals. There are no secrets or hidden ingredients in the organic mattresses and bedding at CozyPure. We work very hard to maintain a “Farm-to-Bed” freshness and purity in all our CozyPure products. We invite every one to come see what goes on in our workshop at 2308 Granby Street in Norfolk, VA. We are always willing to give you a tour of our workshop so you can see the organic magic happen for yourself.

And who knows? Once you purchase your CozyPure organic sleep system, we may see you at our next Slumber Party. Don’t forget your PJs! — by Troy Cooper

I am woman, hear me roar. Helen Reddy’s song reached #1 on the charts in 1972. I was nine. Young enough to be influenced, according to the lyrics, that my gender had no barriers. Having a mom who owned and operated a small hair salon certainly didn’t hurt either. Of course, that’s not to say it’s been an easy road to navigate this business I’ve nurtured and nourished over the past 25 years.

Raising two beautiful kids while running my company definitely had challenges. I spent many years doing most of my work only after they went to bed, and staying up until 2 AM to make deadlines. As they got older, my schedule changed with them. Sometimes a midday school play, doctor appointment or teacher meeting. Other times, spending a whole week across the country for a swim meet. I loved the flexibility, although it was very challenging to juggle the priorities — you know, like cleaning the house. But hey, I am woman, I can roll.

Back in the early 90’s we worked with outside manufacturers to make our products for us, but then it happened ... They started outsourcing. I’m passionate about made in America. So this was near and dear to my heart. If our manufacturers wanted to move operations out of the USA, then heck we’ll just do it ourselves. And so it began, our journey into manufacturing. In the beginning, I admit I wasn’t sure

where to start. But thankfully I had Cris, my right-hand-lady and expert seamstress. I am woman, and I had another one by my side, so let’s rock.

I’m over the assumptions, because almost everyone assumes my company is run by a man. Going to mattress manufacturing trade shows, an industry largely dominated by men, I’m no longer surprised when suppliers direct their conversation towards Hans, my right-hand-man and customer care extraordinaire. It’s actually a great opportunity for me to gain insight of the boys’ club who assume all the women attending are assistants and receptionists. I am woman. I am invincible, not invisible.

Most of the time I’m not Wonder Woman. Every strong woman knows to surround herself with superheroes. When my family, friends and employees are standing by my side, I make that transformation easily. Without them, and without our loyal customers, this road I travel would be lonely and strenuous. I am woman. I am strong. But I am stronger with others.

Just like everyone, through the years I’ve had my share of tragedies and disappointments which resulted in set-backs. But I’ve learned that when you get stuck in the mud, kick it off. If that doesn’t work, take off the boots. Just keep going. Because if I have to, I can do anything. I am woman. — by Cheryl Hahn

Besides water, there are TWO essentials in life: food and sleep. A lot of attention is paid to eating healthier, eating organic and ridding the body of harmful and unhealthy ingredients in our food.

The importance of the food we eat makes sense because it’s how our body gets the vitamins and minerals we need. We eat nutrient-dense superfoods like fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts to ward-off (and even reverse) disease.

The other (often overlooked) necessity of life we must have is sleep. Unfortunately, it’s something most of us don’t think about, yet the consequences are great. A good night’s sleep is vital to our health and well-being. Our healing and recovery. Our vitality and energy. Our restoration and rejuvenation. All this repair of both your body and mind takes place during that night-time shut-eye we call sleep.

Quality deep-sleep requires optimum comfort which includes temperature regulation, proper support and pressure relief. Restorative healing-sleep requires an environment free of harmful toxins because our bodies shut-down and we’re vulnerable to dermal and airborne elements from the synthetic compounds which outgas and decompose in the bedroom.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE IN YOUR BED? With a little research by any consumer, it’s easy to draw the parallel that the chemicals and proprietary formulas being buried in our sleep surfaces is not too different from the additives and preservatives many food companies are being pressured into removing from their products.

BUT HOW DO YOU SLEEP?YoU eat organic...

We’ve learned to read the labels in our food.Shouldn’t we read the labels in our bedding?

We love reading articles by Vani Hari, otherwise known as the Food Babe. She writes investigative reports about conventional foods, how they’re processed with wicked ingredients, as well as the marketing of “fake” healthy food. So many of her posts about hidden and potentially dangerous ingredients are strikingly similar to the bedding industry - everything from the processing, to the chemicals, to the marketing.

“Why are we willing to accept poisons and harmful chemicals in our bedding, when we are actively

rejecting harmful ingredients in our food?”

Perhaps with something as basic as our bedding, we often fall into the old assumption that if it’s for sale, it must be safe. But we are a more informed consumer, with more information and options available to us than ever before. What’s true of our food, should be true of our bedding too. After all, our bedding is one of the most intimate products we use every day!

That’s why here at CozyPure® we liken ourselves to an organic “Farm to Table” eatery by presenting ourselves as a “Farm to Bed” workshop serving-up handmade organic mattresses and bedding. We too use farm fresh ingredients and we make everything to order, right here in Norfolk, Virginia, USA.

Purely sensational headline? Not to me! It’s the truth. If you’ve ever woken up with a stiff neck, you know how that stiffness and discomfort can affect your whole body, all day. Imagine waking up each and every day like that, for years! It had gotten so bad that one morning I woke with my head actually laying on my shoulder, the muscles in such a tight spasm that I could not lift my head up.

Prior to that episode, in the early 1990’s, I tried many remedies, not the least of which was a series of expensive (and toxic) thermal foam pillows, at well over $100 each, with no improvement. I finally went to a neurologist and began receiving botulin toxin (Botox) shots into the muscles of my neck. I took these shots for years and it helped, but it was painful and expensive.

When the stiffness and discomfort returned, I was about ready to go back to the expensive, painful botox shots to avoid the crippling spasms. As it happens, I was a new employee at CozyPure® and learning how

quality, deep sleep improves your whole heath, and ironically, Cheryl was beginning to prototype a new contour pillow and looking for feedback. When she heard about my neck issues, she asked if I would do the testing.

That night I was immediately impressed by the comfort and support under my neck. It’s important to know that I am primarily a side sleeper, and as I slept on it, I realized that other qualities of the pillow were also helping my comfort. The contour in the center not only provided a gentle curve that was supportive, but was also easily compressible and adjustable for my neck. Also the hollow of the contour allowed my ear to rest without causing any numbness from the pressure

of my head against the pillow surface. In addition, my head was supported perfectly, so my neck didn’t curve downward.

This pillow was a revelation for me! With my neck aligned in it’s natural, neutral position, the stiffness and discomfort were drastically reduced. Now I wake up each day with my neck freely able to turn from side to side. My friends and family have commented that my head is sitting straighter on my shoulders, and I’ve noticed it myself in pictures. My neck problem is a neurological one for which there is no permanent remedy. I had been resigned to the fact that I would periodically have to undergo the botox treatments for the rest of my life. Instead now, I sleep comfortably all night, and am able to function normally, with my head straight and movable... rehabilitated without botox shots! It’s been three years of comfort and blissful sleep because the CozyPure® Contour Pillow changed my life, and I am so grateful! — by Patti Erickson

How the CozyPure® Contour Pillow Changed My Life!

The “experts” tell us that we need to replace our sleep systems every 6-8 years. I had reached a milestone with my old mattress and so I set off on a quest. If you’ve ever been mattress shopping you know what I mean when I say the process is down right daunting. I ended up with what I thought was going to provide me with an awesome night’s sleep. It was one of those “S” brands, latest hybrid technology, part gel memory foam, part advanced innerspring. Most importantly, the gel infused pillowtop promised to keep me cool (women of a certain age know what I’m talking about.) And it felt great in the showroom for the 15 minutes I actually spent lying down on it. Fast forward and several thousand dollars later....I can’t sleep! I toss, I turn, it’s hot, I’m at the bottom of a ravine and I can’t climb out!

I came to work at CozyPure and the first thing I did was purchase the CozyPure® Luxury Hotel Collection. It was a life changer. By now I knew a thing or two about mattresses. What’s in them, what’s not. A product consisting of three ingredients with names I could pronounce just makes sense. The collection includes

a natural latex rubber mattress complete with all the organic bedding you need for a total bed makeover: organic mattress protector, our exclusive Cuddle-Top latex topper (like a cloud, no exaggeration), a hand-tied wool comforter, natural latex LaNoodle pillows (another exclusive), certified organic cotton sheets, pillowcases and duvet cover. Organic cotton. Pure wool. Harvested rubber. Fresh. Sumptuous.

There are so many reasons why I love my CozyPure mattress. I have multiple sensitivities. Even if you don’t suffer from allergies, like I do, imagine the peace of mind knowing that your mattress is anti-microbial, anti dust-mite and mold resistant. Sleep hot? Thing of the past. The top

of our mattress is quilted with temperature regulating wool. Wool is very therapeutic and proven to provide deep, healthy sleep. Speaking of wool, did you know that when properly compressed, wool is a natural fire barrier? That’s right, we use wool to pass the open-flame test without adding any fire retardants or toxic chemicals. And the latex? 100% milk from the rubber tree offers superior support and resiliency. Custom comfort? Absolutely. Individual comfort layers change out in a snap if your needs change, for whatever reason. Durability? I’m pretty sure this will be the last mattress I ever buy.

I now have a little slice of heaven where I go every night. I will say, it took me about a week to get used to my new latex mattress. It can take upwards of 30 days, especially if you’re body is misaligned from sleeping on a bad mattress. The CozyPure Hotel Collection addressed all of my needs and I have never slept better. If you know me, then you know how much I love my furry four-legged friends. Trust me, between felines and canines, my house is full. I have been a part of the CozyPure family since 2007 and immediately fell in love with the natural bedding, as well as the commitment to made in the USA quality, but I must admit one of my favorite things was the location. Our building in Ocean View was only a few blocks from my house which allowed me to go home during breaks and spend time with my best friends, Sunshine and Cycle. I’d take them outside for walks, and when the weather was really nice, we’d enjoy the beach before I went back to work. Life was good!

But CozyPure was growing... in the Spring of 2014, Cheryl, the CEO and founder, announced that we had no choice but to move to a larger location. By summer of the same year, we found our new building at 24th and Granby. Five times larger, but also five times further from my house. While I was happy for the space, I was secretly saddened that I would not have time to go home during break to spend time with Sunshine and

Cycle. I am not sure why I was surprised, but Cheryl already had a plan. The new location was large enough to allow a “doggy day care” in the office and I could bring them to work with me! Since quite a few of us have four-legged friends, we were ALL excited when Cheryl told us the news.

All the doggies have their own CozyPure pet bed, although they move around and share their beds with each other. When I’m not at my desk or in the factory, you can find me outside walking and playing with all the dogs. Having them by my side brightens my day, adds to productivity and I have formed better working relationships with my co-workers through our “cute pet stories.”

Meet The Doggone Crew

Sunshine: My dog, but she likes to hang out at Cheryl’s desk. I think Cheryl secretly gives her treats but they both deny it. As a herding dog, Sunshine has learned to improvise. She loves running around our parking lot barking and chasing the birds in-flight. I’m not sure what she would do if she ever caught one, but at 13 years old and not one caught yet, pretty sure I will never know.

Cycle (rhymes with Pickle): My adopted girl from Norfolk Animal Care Center, also 13, was dropped off at the shelter by her previous human. Unwanted, scared, confused and depressed, Cycle was overlooked by potential adopters and would soon be put down. A last plea was put out by the shelter and I couldn’t resist her big, sad eyes. Turns out all she wanted was love and security which she gets from me, as well as all the CozyPure family members, and her sweet personality is evolving every day. Visit your local animal shelter soon and adopt. The gratitude you receive from your adopted pet will amaze you!

Finn: Susan’s faithful pit-mix companion is our furry friend known best for his big kisses, Also adopted as a youngster from a shelter, Finns favorite past-time is lounging on all the dog beds before finally sneaking on the daybed filled with pillows. I don’t think he knows which is his favorite. I agree, it is a tough choice!

Chico: Diane’s little baby is the smallest of the group and also the feistiest. A cute little itty bitty Chihuahua with a big personality that keeps all the others in line. He’s all about the “head scratching” and will be sure to let you know when he has had enough (which is never).

Bosco and Sasha: The pups of the group, also rescued, belong to Ellis. They always keep us entertained with their spunky curiosity and energy. I LOVE puppies and they are both growing so fast!

Bringing dogs to work helps keep employees’ spirits high and adds to the sense of community and connection. Without even knowing it, our doggies have brought us closer together. The next time you find yourself at 24th and Granby, come in and say “hi” to our CozyPure doggies... we will happily take you through the office for a meet and greet of wagging tails and big kisses. — by Hans Bunton
