Cow Pen Slough Water Monitoring

Project Overview

Sarasota County Water Resource Management has requested Sarasota County Air andWater Quality Protection to perform field testing and sampling in several locations alongthe Cow Pen Slough drainage basin. The purpose of this project is to gather data todetermine the possibility of using Cow Pen Slough as a future water source for SarasotaCounty.

Scope of Work

Air and Water Quality Protection will conduct water quality sampling at five locations,four locations in Cow Pen Slough and one location in the Vegetable Relief Canal (refer tomaps for sample locations). Sampling will be conducted monthly for Total Coliform andFecal Coliform at all locations. Primary and Secondary Drinking Water Standards andHardness will be sampled monthly at the Cow Pen Slough North Weir (CPS-NW)location only. All samples will be stored on ice and turned over to Sarasota CountyNatural Resources Quality Assurance Officer for shipment to the contract laboratories.Sampling will be done quarterly for Giardia and Cryptosporidium at the CPS-NWlocation only. Giardia and Cryptosporidium containers will be picked up from the Cityof Tampa Laboratory at the Hillsborough River Water Treatment Plant and deliveredback to them on the same day of sampling for analysis.

Field testing, field conditions, sample collection, and general observations wereconducted by Chris Meyer and Greg Wahl on August 5, 2003. The rainfall data has beenprovided courtesy of Jeff Banner, Sarasota County Resource Management, TelemetryProject. Note: There were equipment issues at the CPS-l site in August. Rainfalltotals were under reported. The flow data has been provided courtesy of John Coffin,Hydrologic Data Collection, Inc.
