The Gathering: 2015 KCA Convention

Here we are once again! It ’s time for cattle producers all across the state to gather in

Owensboro for the 2015 Kentucky Cattleman’s Association Convention and Trade Show. I would like to wel-come the Burley Tobacco Growers Cooperative back as they host their annual convention as well as the joint Ag Industry Trade Show. The new Owensboro Convention Center gives both groups plenty of room to spread out and get down to business. The trade show will feature exhibits and plenty of educational sessions are planned too, so make sure to attend as many as you can.

The schedule will feature meetings organized by many industry organizations including: Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association, Kentucky Cattlemen’s Foundation, Kentucky Forage and Grasslands

Council, Burley Tobaccos Growers Cooperative, Kentucky Allied Industry Council, Kentucky Junior Cattlemen’s Association, Kentucky Livestock Marketing Association, Kentucky Beef Council, Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Kentucky Beef Network, and the University of Kentucky. Your registration allows you to attend all meetings and educational sessions, including those offered by the Burley Tobacco Growers Cooperative.

The Ag Industry trade show pro-vides attendees with the opportunity to see the most up to date products and services available to enhance efficiency and profitability on the farm. Over 100 companies from both organizations will be present to display and inform you of the advances, all while networking with other farmers. In addition, many

booths will feature giveaways, games and prize drawings. Whether you are looking for farm vehicles, fencing, feed supplies, animal health products or the latest in technology, you will find it here under one roof at the 2015 KCA Convention and Trade Show.

The agenda has many great opportunities in store this year with plenty to do Friday and Saturday. Make sure you check the schedule as many meetings have been moved to new days and time slots. We will lead off with the Beef Efficiency Conference and have a full day of events planned for you. The Ag Industry Trade Show will open at 11:30 am with an exclusive Welcome reception in the trade show fol-lowed by the KCA Opening General Session will begin at 1:00 pm. We will finish the evening with the

famous Allied Industry Game Night. Saturday will be packed full of events also. We have several great speakers who will catch you up on industry issues. The rest of the day will fea-ture many educational sessions, and we will end the day with the Evening Extravaganza featuring a steak din-ner, live Foundation Auction, and the announcement of the 2014 Hall of Fame award winners.

While staying in the heart of Owensboro you can take the opportunity to socialize with other Kentucky producers or go out and visit downtown Owensboro. Whatever you choose to do, we hope you enjoy it and I look forward to seeing each of you there!

Sincerely,Tim WhiteConvention Chairman

Beef Cattle Efficiency Conference Set for January 16 at KCA ConventionBY JEFF LEHMKUHLER

Need an excuse to stay indoors for a morning in January? Then join us at the second

Kentucky Beef Efficiency Conference on January 16th, 2015 at the new Owensboro Convention Center. The planning committee has developed a program that builds upon last year’s conference with leading experts from across the country. This conference is free to the general public in thanks to financial support from the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund.

Dr. Dave Lalman, Professor and Extension Beef Cattle Specialist at Oklahoma State University, will attempt to answer the age old ques-tion “What Makes an Efficient Cow?”. During his discussion, the

concept of matching cow production potential to available resources will be discussed. Dr. Lalman’s Extension and research focuses on evaluating beef production systems, increasing profitability and/or reducing cost of production through improved forage utilization and optimal supplementa-tion practices.

Continuing along the theme of female efficiency for the beef herd will be Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam. Dr. Van Eenennaam is an Extension Specialist in the field of Animal Genomics and Biotechnology at the University of California-Davis. Her presentation titled “Can early embry-onic losses that reduce reproduction efficiency be managed through genet-ics?” will introduce how technology can aid in managing undesirable outcomes of matings that may

involve lethal genetic carriers. Dr. Van Eenennaam received the 2014 American Society of Animal Science National Extension Award and the 2014 Borlaug CAST Communication Award.

Rounding out this year’s program is former manager and Vice President of Ag Reserves Incorporated, Burke Teichert. Ag Reserves Inc. is a part-ner company with Farmland Reserves Inc. which includes the Deseret Cattle and Citrus holdings. Mr. Teichert hails from Wyoming and left the family ranch to obtain a degree in agricultural business from Brigham Young University and later a Master’s degree from the University of Wyoming in Agricultural Economics. His experiences include livestock division manager in Washington, assistant Professor of Agricultural

Economics, acquisition of ranch and farmland in United States, Canada and Argentina. Mr. Teichert will offer insights to the challenging question “What Defines an Efficient Beef Cattle Operation?”.

Mark your calendars and plan to join us for a great learning experience. This program is also sponsored by the Kentucky Beef Network, Kentucky Cattleman’s Association and the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. There is no fee to attend the Kentucky Beef Efficiency confer-ence. If you plan to attend the KCA convention be sure to register for the convention. Contact the Kentucky Cattleman’s Association office with any questions.

2014 will be remembered by many for various reasons. For the Hinton Mills family, it will be remembered as the year that we lost both Frank O. Hinton and Maurice Newman. These men had countless similarities, so many that the two were often mistaken for brothers. Both men worked the biggest part of their lives for Hinton Mills. Frank O. joined his father’s business full-time in 1945 after serving his country during WWII, and Maurice started shortly thereafter in 1948. The two first cousins worked long hard hours and were passionate about our business and agriculture. They cared

about their community, their customers and their co-workers. Both men loved their family – parents, siblings, wives, children and grandchildren. Both also shared similar hardships, losing their wives to death many years before passing away themselves. The two best friends fittingly passed away the same year.

It’s difficult to encompass the magnitude of the impact each man has had on our business and our lives with only words. Words synonymous with both men would certainly include – loving, compassionate, trustworthy, moral, dedicated, hardworking and men of character and integrity. But if we had to choose only three, they would be loyal, Christian and role models. In fact, it might be best to combine the three as “loyal Christian role models.” In a day when folks seem to have their priorities all too often misappropriated, we feel

truly blessed to have known these two men who were role models to so many. Frank O. and Maurice were both loyal to their friends, family and their faith beyond question. As we celebrate Christmas and as 2014 comes to a close, may we remember to love our neighbors as ourselves, to not compromise our faith, and to choose our role models wisely.

Are you doing your partto keep consumers lovin’ beef?

When you sell your calves at the local auction market, you pay your $1-per-head beef checkoff to invest in maintaining strong demand for your product. But did you know that when you sell an animal to your neighbor, you also need to pay your share of the checkoff?

e beef checkoff returns $5.55 for every $1 invested. Your checkoff promotes the benefits of beef in a healthy diet, discovers ways to keep the U.S. beef supply safe and shares management practices that keep animals healthy.

So when you trade any beef or dairy animal, be sure to invest your fair share into the future of your industry.
