Thursday February 4th, 2021 Volume 1 Issue #19 Quarantine Comes to an End Tomorrow, Friday February 5th, 2021 is the last day of our quarantine. It has had its ups and downs, but I feel as though things went well for our class! Zoom attendance was great, and I think the students enjoyed being able to show and tell things that they normally would not have been able to (were things Face to Face like planned.) 50% of AR Goal due Thursday February 18th Even though it seems as though the 3rd quarter just started, students are two weeks away from needing to be at 50% of their quarterly AR Goals. As always, if you have any questions about your child’s current progress, please let me know! NWEA MAP Testing Continues the week of February 8th I know it is not the most exciting news you will hear all day, but we will resume MAP testing once we are all back in school next week. I do not know if an official schedule has been created or not, but please be prepared for Math and Reading testing next week! Quarter 3 Incentive is the CARNIVAL! For 20 Tiger Bucks, your child can play some fun games including dunking Mr. Prindle in the Dunk Tank! The Carnival will be held on Wednesday March 31st. Thank you for all the help and support during the last week and a half. :) ****Mr. Thorelli****

Computer Science — Mrs Bradbury
Welcome to Computer Science this semester my students have started their next unit in Com-puter Science— Data in Society.
In this unit the students will look at how a computer uses, processes and outputs data, they will learn about ASCII and Binary code, as well as how to collect data and refine this data ready for use within a given application.
This week students have looked at APPS, they have evaluated their favorite apps and have identified both good and bad points about this these apps.
Students have started to think about their own APP design, which we will go onto make the week after next, students have created product analysis (of existing apps), mind maps to show their own ideas for their own app and they have also designed logos for their apps, giving rea-sons for their design choices.
Great work guys !!!
PIXLR CHALLENGE: Each Friday our classes compete to win a prize, my computer randomly picks 4 words. The students then have to use the Words to create a piece of artwork, using their digital art skills. The Words last week were— Cow, Starfish, Fire and skateboard.
Sixth and Seventh Grade Math News from Ms. Chapin ([email protected])
This week, the sixth grade math students continued exploring the area of different polygons and found the area of composite shapes by decomposing them into known polygons (basically cutting them into rectangles, trapezoids, and triangles). Their next test will be Wednesday, February 10.
In 7th grade math, they also found the area of composite shapes, building on the skill from 6th grade math but adding in circles, semicircles, and quarter-circles. Then, they took the next step into finding the volume of prisms, which is the area of the base times the height. They continued moving forward into pyramids, which are ⅓ of the area of the base times the height, as three pyramids would fit into a prism with an equal base and height. Next week, they will learn about surface area and the surface area and volume of composite shapes. It can be really tricky, so it is really important that students focus on drawing the figures accurately on graph paper, labeling everything, and writing out each step. Each problem takes a significant amount of time and focus, so this is a very good time to work on study skills. Also, using different colors can help. Their next test will be Friday, February 12.
The IXL skills for the past week are due for all students on Feb. 8 at 7:30 AM. Any students who are absent are welcome to join the e-Learning classes, as I have those for every class, too. 6th Grade Advanced meets 8:30-9:17, 7th grade Advanced meets virtually 9:20-10:05, 7th grade meets 10:08-10:53, and 6th grade math meets 10:56-12:32.

WHY ARE EFFECTIVE NOTE TAKING SKILLS IMPORTANT? Better notes will help you remember concepts, develop meaningful learning skills, and gain a better understanding of a topic. Effective notes will even lead to less stress when test time comes around! Learning how to take better study notes in class helps improve recall and understanding of what you are learning because it:
• Ensures you are actively listening to what the teacher is saying
• Requires you to think about what you are writing
• Helps you make connections between topics
• Serves as quality review material for after class
Using different note taking strategies is important, especially as you progress through high school and transition to college or university. There are several note taking techniques you can use to start taking better notes in class. https://www.oxfordlearning.com/5-effective-note-taking-methods/
