LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Greetings Coveters,

So since we last met, the colder months have come and gone, spring did its thing, and now we all shout “hip hip hooray” to daylight savings and the magic that is Australia in summer.

I love this blissed out season that is all things barefoot, cocktails, beaches and balmy nights. Can you smell the coconut oil?

Embrace how everyone is a little more lively, brighter, and bubblier as we say adios to ugg boots and pale complexions!

Instead we give thanks for festivities, festivals and skinny dipping (if you so desire.)

Speaking of coveting, here is what we have in stall for Issue 13.

In keeping with the rise in temperature we have a smoking hot Issue for you!

Babes to boot! Including the beautiful Ruby Rose, who we were delighted to have as our cover girl.

We also chat with Jesinta Campbell, Ashley Hart and Alex Davis…

The gorgeous Melbourne Dj/Producer Jesus Loyola hung out and busted a pose or two as well as the wonderfully talented Timomatic-whose story was refreshing. Speaking of music we had a cheeky chat with dj/producer Helena Atherton, the first female ever to hit no.1 on the Aria club charts!

Talking fashion we have the ladies covered for the perfect summer dress, with Brooke Daniels, and if you are a Sass and Bide fan you are going to love our feature on new Brisbane based label Ash to Gold. Tropical prints, neon and sparkle will be everywhere this summer, and you will find splashes of it throughout the Issue.

We have thrown in some reviews for your poolside pleasure and crossed over shores to speak with bloggers from the feel good streets of Philly, USA- Free People.

Relax, indulge and most importantly enjoy!

We are getting in a little early because we can and we love you- so Merry Christmas and a wonderfully Happy New Year from all of us at COVET!

Until next time- stay safe, tunes up and I hope Santa is good to you…

Toot toot!

and feel the addiction is going to go up during the hotter months.

3. Stella McCartney Fragrance L.I.L.Y. $110With a blend of oak moss and truffle! All natural extracts are used and the perfume was designed by Stella to be uncomplicated and a reflection and ode to her childhood. One of the most misunderstood personalities in Australia’s public eye, Ruby Rose has finally learned to let it all go. Not content with a career in music, television presenting and acting, we spoke to Ruby Rose about her impending book release, a movie role alongside Christina Ricci, and what it’s like to eat, drink and live in Melbourne.

STORY NICHOLAS ACQUROFF PHOTOGRAPHY ANTHONY LICURIA @ APL PHOTOGRAPHY MAKEUP RENEE ZANELLI HAIR JOEY SCANDIZZO STYLIST LANA WILKINSON CREATIVE DEANNA DEPETRO

What did you do today Ruby?

Today was a fairly cruisey day because it’s a weekday that sits between very busy periods. I got up and did bikram yoga, put together some mixes for radio and downloaded new music for my gigs this weekend. I took Daisy for a walk and then I have Boxing later.

Where are you l iv ing at the moment, where do you get your coffee in the morning and where do you l ike going for dinner?

I live in Melbourne. Want my street address (laughs)? It’s as though I don’t really live anywhere sometimes, it’s just recently I have made a good attempt to plant my feet firmly on the ground. Too much travel can sometimes disorientate you. I was spending a day or two a week at home and sometimes not even that so it’s good to have rescheduled things a little more in my favour of late. There is great coffee in Richmond at ‘Est.1983 Espresso’ and ‘Panini Bar’ - one of my favourites. ‘Trutrack’ in North Melbourne is somewhere I frequent, as my

grand parents are near by. Dinner wise – it’s Melbourne, the melting pot of Australia, the world even, where do I start?! I love ‘Vegie Bar’ in Brunswick St, and any of George Calombaris’s restaurants.

You have a day off - the weather is beauti ful and you’ve got your mobi le turned off . Who do you spend the day with and what do you do?

Just recently I had my phone turned off in my sleep - it wasn’t a day off - so it was a disaster. I missed my alarm, so I slept past an 8am flight. Then I kept sleeping, through people calling. Long story short, my mother, grandparents, best friends, everyone was called- even the police. It ended well when my house was broken into by a great friend who works at my DJ agency. He found me fast asleep dribbling in bed. I never sleep in, or leave calls unreturned, so when it got to 1 or 2 pm, from memory, everyone got worried. A sleep in to me is about 10 am. Max.

Days off I always have my phone on incase someone needs to contact me but I am a beach girl so if it’s warm I’ll grab the surfboard and hit Kilkunda. Otherwise I jump on my Ducati and go for a ride to clear my head.

From al l I ’ve read, you seem l ike a very conscientious person. What is i t l ike sharing yourself with the world?

I make sure I share the parts of me I am comfortable sharing but also keep some things sacred.

What is the publ ic’s most common misconception about you?

I don’t know anymore, I think it used to be that I was quite frank, or brash even. That was when I was younger, to tell you the truth I wouldn’t have a clue anymore, I try to just stick to what I am doing and not search for my happiness in others opinions.

My mother thinks that you’re a woman of convict ion; that you’re strong and beauti ful . Is this strange, or do you also appeal to the older generat ion?

That’s very special. I remember when I received a letter on my desk at the 7pm Project from a 80 year old woman in a wheel chair, who was having her son help write. She had never written a ‘fan’ letter before but wanted to tell me what a great role model she thought I was (she didn’t love the tattoos but could see past that.) That letter filled me with tears. How come your Aunt Mary is your favourite person in the whole world?

She’s my great aunty who lives in Tasmania and she basically saved my life, and my mothers. (She’s) always been there and I will love her for eternity.

What are you most passionate about?

Mental health, education, music and bullying.

How do your fr iends see you?

I am lucky enough to have beautiful friends who actually attend a lot of my gigs. Sometimes I will fly them with me on my interstate trips so I get some ‘friend’ love. They keep me

grounded and energized, so it’s important to have them around me. These wacky adventures I go on are not as mind blowing without someone to share them with, and someone to pinch me when I am getting complacent.

What is your major character f law?

They say I cancel a lot... I’ve missed a few birthdays, weddings, christenings, it’s part of what I have had to sacrifice in my busy job, but I am getting better at it.

When you go on hol idays with a fr iend, what do they f ind most annoying about you?

That I get so much for free, or how beautiful the places I stay at are. I have to hit them and say “well I brought you here didn’t I?” – even if I did miss your wedding.

And what do your closest fr iends f ind most endearing and loveable about you? Are you stubborn or self ish or hot tempered?

They know the real me, I am an absolute hopeless romantic, a complete dag and well a loser really. I kick the football at Edinburough gardens, I watch lame movies, and I go out of my way to make my friends feel imperative to my life.

I used to be hot headed, when I drank maybe more so. But I am very level and Zen since taking a year off drinking. It’s so calming-I will continue not drinking and just stick with my yoga and boxing for my highs.

How do you feel being a part of the social pages? Does i t annoy you that so many media outlets would rather report on your tweets from the bathroom, than your career in journal ism?

No I am no longer bothered. Social media is a huge part of today. You can’t get upset when press write something you don’t agree with, but then be happy when they write something good. That’s all ego. You have to be unaffected either way.

What is next for Ruby Rose?

My single ‘Guilty Pleasure’ has just released and I have performances coming up, my movie with Christina Ricci is out next year, and so are some cool TV projects I have been working with. I just have a giant list of wonderful things I am waiting to share with everyone so 2013 will be a great year.

And aside from that, what have you always wanted to do that you think you might start soon?

I want to just focus on my album for now. I am already in enough trouble for wanting to continue fighting in amateur boxing! Everyone wants me to retire on a high.

The gorgeous Chadwick’s model and partner of AFL star Scott Pendlebury chats to COVET about the inescapable WAG title, favourite designers, summer essentials, and her cooking skills.

We lead her in to find out about the fresh faced beauty that is Alex Davis.

Growing up I… was very athletic! I was a gymnast through all my primary and high school years and was into almost every sport, little bit of a tomboy that’s for sure.

Fashion to me is… important! I have to look the best I can most days for jobs and castings, but I also have learnt to love fashion working within the industry and having fun with trends.

Summer time for me… is my ultimate. I am a big summer girl and love being outdoors. Although winter has grown on me, as I have recently started snowboarding.

Being referred to as a WAG… is just something I can’t change, so I don’t let it bother me.

Not many people would know… I’m a massive family girl- my family and Scott’s family are my favourite people to hang out with.

On my ‘playlist’ you would find… Music! Haha no, whatever Scott puts on there I am not very good with technology!

A day in the life usually involves… Exercise, jobs/castings, the best friend Pheebs, the boy, the dog, food, sleep.

I keep fit by… moving every day and mixing it up! Running, spin, boxing, training groups, and walking.

When I cook my signature dish is… roast pumpkin, spinach and feta salad, always a hit. In Scott’s footy season there are a lot of pasta and rice dishes too.

My favourite place to eat in Melbourne is… hmmm just one is hard to pick! But I would have to say ‘Simple Affair’ on Bay Street Port Melbourne for brekkie and lunch, organic goodness!

My favourite Australian designers are… Sass and bide, Ksubi, and anything that is cool and casual!

I started modelling… at 21, after I had finished most of my University degree.

2013 is going to be… another great year.

I am studying food science and nutrition because… nutrition and healthy living is my passion. I feel for me it is important to be educated, challenged and have something to work on outside of the modelling industry.

On a rare day off you will find me… taking long walks with Lenni (our dog) chilling out with Scott, family & friends, eating good food, and drinking great wine.

My five summer essentials… sunscreen, bathers, sea/pool/river, friends/family, and a smile.

ASH TOGOLD

Brisbane based boutique ASH TO GOLD is an Australian grown and produced luxury lifestyle brand, created to empower the wearer through the use of high quality fabrics and attention to detail in each design. Manipulation of simplicity through an ever longing desire for individuality and greatness defines ASH TO GOLD’s aesthetics. Pairing the soft with the strong, and a heavy focus on conscious awareness towards sustainability. In a market heavily saturated with trends, ASH TO GOLD seeks to remain ‘undefined’.

COVETMAGAZINE.COM.AU

ASH TO GOLD as a concept came about in 2010, when owner/designer Samantha Ashton come out of a time of personal self-discovery, connecting strongly with the process of creation. Being able to identify with fashion from a young age and working as a model for many years, Ashton was exposed to a plethora of garments but always felt there was something missing in the market explaining, “there was an excitement I couldn’t find in what other designers had to offer, so it was kind of like a DIY project that grew into this identity we now know as ASH TO GOLD” she says.

Ashton says the Sass and Bide story has inspired the ASH TO GOLD journey from concept to creation by taking ideas and delivering them into physical results.

Ashton says she loves being able to use fashion as a form of art and communication “I love that I have the freedom to style myself in pieces of wearable art that send out a message to the people I interact with each day. Fashion for me is daily armour that empowers me to make the most of every opportunity”.

The current ASH TO GOLD collection, Future Fragments draws on the feelings of ‘de ja vu’, and the concept of an ‘alternate universe.’ The pieces are futuristic while retaining classic silhouettes, with exclusive graphic prints manifested through Ashton’s imagination.

The idea behind ASH TO GOLD is to make pieces that survive the trends and have a lasting place in wardrobes around the world. Each piece is individually hand crafted. Ashton believes in spending extra time on quality and design although it may limit production it ensures exclusivity in each and every piece available.

After taking to the runway with a striking collection in the ‘New Generation’ section of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week show in May this year, the interest in ASH TO GOLD went global. Showcasing sophisticated detailing and structural panels with bold pastel colours against whites. Strong, chunky accessories and bright colours were a staple with each look, staying true to the brand’s ideal of turning a ‘nothing’ into an extraordinary ‘something’. As the name suggests ASH TO GOLD represents the journey an object takes from an immaterial existence to being envisioned and manipulated thus re-creating a masterpiece.

Since debuting at Fashion Week, ASH TO GOLD has been featured in Harper’s Bazaar US, Face Hunter’s Yvan Rodic, and a diverse assortment of bloggers and fashionistas alike - and that’s just the

icing on the cake for Ashton. Learning so much from her involvement in Fashion Week Samantha is now counting down to the next show in March.

Since launching ASH TO GOLD in November last year, garments have been available online and internationally through the website www.ashtogold.com. There is also a pop-up space in Brisbane which stocks ASH TO GOLD, but by the end of the year interstate lovers will have their own destinations for the ASH TO GOLD experience.

Not just a budding fashion brand, ASH TO GOLD also stands out from the crowd with a conscious awareness towards sustainability. Before starting the label, Ashton became a Mum which changed her outlook on life “I used to be so self-involved and careless about the way I treated my body and the environment, and after having my son it put everything in perspective, more so for his future than anything,” she says.

Sustainability for Samantha “means a better future, appreciating what we have and giving back for everything we are blessed with through compassion. I have this amazing opportunity to share my love of fashion with the world and I am doing it consciously through small production runs, recycling, up-cycling, and doing as much as I can to raise awareness for sustainability.”

Next on the cards for ASH TO GOLD is to tackle the Asian and The Middle Eastern markets, Ashton believes these two destinations are “hungry for new and fresh designs ….Australian culture doesn’t have the grandeur that the rest of the world can draw from, which helps me to keep our pieces current and fresh”.

The collection is edgy and exotic, yet young and refined. The creativity, passion, dedication and prowess of Samantha Ashton and her team at ASH TO GOLD is what makes this label so covetable right now.

SUMMER ISSUE 13

Australian beauty Ash Hart has literally captured the hearts of those all around the globe with her striking physique and her charming smile. Having appeared in countless modelling shoots and campaigns, Ash has accumulated a strong portfolio including being named the 2011 Qantas Australian Formula One Grand Prix Ambassador and more recently became an Ambassador for Swisse Vitamins. Covet secured a rare ‘free’ moment to catch up with the effortlessly gorgeous model, who shares her whirlwind of a year with us, crediting mediation and family as her sanctuary.

I f you could rel ive one work/model l ing experience what would i t be?

I have had so many fantastic experiences modelling. My favourite role so far has been the 2011 GP ambassador role. Being up close to all the action on and off track was incredible. It was the most exciting week of my life, the feeling at the start of the race is unexplainable, the revving of the engines before take-off vibrates through your body and the whole world stops in that moment, feeling the same excitement. I actually got to ride in the 2 seater F1 car at 300 kph around the track myself! Wow! Really no words- just the fastest my heart has ever beat! What an experience!

What is your favourite travel dest inat ion and why?

I go to many amazing places but my all-time favourite destination is always Melbourne. It’s a city like no other.

I love our shopping and restaurants, parks and beaches.

It’s very multicultural and the Australian feel in general is very laid back - yet boy do we know how to party!

Whatever you are feeling, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Melbourne, and it is just the best city in the world!

I love Guy Grossi’s restaurant Grossi Florentino for a good Italian feed, dining at home is also one of my favourite things to do.

Are you the type to set a new years resolut ion?

No. I have a resolution every day, which has just become the way I live. Tell yourself each day that ‘Happiness is a mindset.’

We can’t change a lot of situations in our lives or even thoughts that come into our minds but the one thing that we have control over is our reaction to something. So I choose the best feeling and thoughts possible in every situation. By doing this I believe I keep attracting more and more positivity into my life, its limitless happiness! Happiness is a choice, so choose it.

What inspires you?

I’m so inspired by health, fitness and being happy. Even more blissful to being in a state of pure love. I am following my charm in this direction that is just creating more and more of it in my life.

Having created such a successful l i fe for yourself , at the end of the day, what keeps you grounded?

My life is so busy- which I’m grateful for. My down time is usually on a plane flying from job to job, over time I’ve become really fond of flying as it is zero detractions, and pure ‘me time.’

At home I love reading with a hot cup of tea by my side, but what truly relaxes me is meditation, the form I practice is called transcendental meditation (or TM). I meditate twice a day for 20 minutes every day and even more when up in the air. It allows me to go into a deep state of rest that keeps me constantly calm, relaxed, happy and healthy.

Leading such a busy schedule, how do you keep in shape?

On weekends, or when I have time off I love being outside and amongst nature. There is no better place than the beach for me. Running along the sand and doing yoga under the sun to the sound of the waves is my heaven.

If I’m not able to get outside or don’t have much time my main source of exercise is skipping, 20 minutes kicks my butt and it’s the easiest thing to travel with.

What are you reading at the moment?

My favourite book is the “Owner of Now.” It is a book that I like to re visit every couple of months that keeps me aware and present. At the moment I’m reading ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, it’s kinky and an easy read! (Laughs) I’m really enjoying it.

Page 26: COVET MAGAZINE ISSUE 13

26

COVETMAGAZINE.COM.AU

What do you love about model l ing?

I’ve recently shot campaigns for Swisse, Prana and Lucy Yoga Brains. I’m getting booked for active sports-lifestyle and beach wear sections and these jobs are what I’m all about. I feel so comfortable in my own skin and ideally I want to inspire others to be the best they can be and be blissfully happy while doing it.

Where have some of your latest model ing shoots been?

I have been flying around like a crazy woman shooting in some of the most incredible places - Costa Rica in Central America, Zanzibar in Africa, Sardinia in Italy & Ibiza in Spain, just to name a few.

When did you make the move to LA? How are you enjoying i t?

I made the move to live in LA with my Boyfriend Buck from New York about a year ago, which I have really been enjoying. When I am here (with all my travel I’m hardly home) coming back to the open space and beautiful nature that surrounds LA feels like my whole life has taken a big deep breath.

SUMMER ISSUE 13

Specializing in dresses, Daniels is simply perfect for summer time!

The Sydney based designer is dedicated to producing dresses to make you look and feel great, and won’t burn a massive hole in your pocket. Affordable and of quality- hooray!

Ok this one is for the ladies. While we all love a good cocktail party and receiving countless invites to the silly season’s festivities, sometimes it is near impossible to find just the right dress, and let’s face it we all struggle to make an appearance in an outfit twice over. Be it our pride or our addiction to fashion, summer calls for multiply dresses.

Think sexy but chic, detailed but defined, and one that allows you to ooze confidence resulting in comfort. Cue Brook Daniels whose mantra sings “chic simplicity with sleek styling.”

Daniels manifesto is to assure “your assets are accentuated, tiny flaws are diminished, and feminine shapes are contoured.” Sound good?

Inspired by classic European styles that will unleash your inner goddess come summer time- and rightly so. Last season’s woman of inspiration was Rosie Huntington Whitely- this time round it is none other than Rihanna! Perfectly fitting given that the Brooke Daniels women is described by the designer as someone who is “confident, fun and knows what to wear to make her look and feel great.”

Brooke cleverly designs each dress to have its own individual feature, be it to support, camouflage or extenuate certain areas she explains “quality of fabric, cut and design combined with flattering techniques like ruching and colour blocking” is how she achieves and ensures success. Daniels maintains however that this is no simple task “the hard part is working these into trend concepts, hence many sleepless nights.”

After opening her own boutique in Bondi 2006, Daniels explains “I became frustrated that I couldn’t source the main thing women wanted- simple, striking pieces, made to look wearable, and feel amazing.” So she took matters into her own hands and in 2008 her label began and the online store took off in 2011.

Brooke offers diversity as well as wearable practical pieces for summer. However imagination plays a strong part in the design process also, her S/S13 collection was inspired by the “Caribbean- from creatures within it, the pirates that ruled and the natural seascapes,” she says.

Due to clean lines and flawless finishes, the garments carry a timeless element with them, “I push the boundaries by using different shapes and fabrications each season, and I am proud that quality is a priority for me,” says Daniels.

Add a little va-va voom to a night out with the Marina Dress, tick off any evening event or cocktail party with the Deck Dress, and dress to impress on any occasion with sequined mermaid number, The Ariel Dress.

Her self-titled S/S13 Collection embodies seasonal trends of neutrals, bodycon fits, cut out collars, metallic and crisp fresh whites. My personal favourites are the Medallion and the Captain Jack dress, pure perfection and effortless chic. Maxi’s, mini’s, off the shoulder, black and white or colour- take your pick and pile up your wardrobe.

Daniels only buys fabrics from Australian and New Zealand companies enthusing “being Australian made is a pledge I will always stand by, and I feel great that I am supporting wonderful local businesses and people,” she says.

With summer being a busy time for work commitments, Brooke will not be holidaying anywhere but insists “there will still be lots of weekends away up the coast and dinners out,” adding that her two greatest loves in life are her boyfriend and her horse- Mr.Darcy.

I had to ask- with so much time spent creating outfits for others what fashion elements does the designer herself covet the most?

“I must confess I spend far too much money on shoes! I love Gucci, Bally, and Pucci.”

Great taste in shoes, a great designer, and 100% Australian made.

BORN TO BE

FREE PEOPLESTORY SNJEZANA BOBIC

More than just a fashion brand, Free People is also an accessible and freethinking place to seek inspiring creative realms in the form of Bldg 25.

Situated in the Navy Yard on the edge of Philadelphia is a cluster of renovated warehouses that sit along the Delaware River, and it’s in here that you’ll find Building 25- and more precisely the magic that is Free People.

Created in 2006 by four young women- precisely for women, who together wanted to give Free People devotees a peek inside the mind of the brand.

Senior Writer Julia, Fashion Writer Jemma, Décor Writer Brigette and Editorial Manager Sharni make up the small group of talented minds that speak on behalf of the brand as a whole concept. The blog, Bldg 25 offers home, food, beauty, music and of course fashion inspiration through images, quotes, recipes, written content and interviews.

With a large network of creative minds outside of the Building 25 walls and a thirst for knowledge and sharing, Free People likes to inspire and discover new talent. “There were so many amazing people and things happening internally, we wanted to open the door and invite others to explore,” says Julia. “We were handed an outlet to share internal thoughts, inspirations, and loves on behalf of the brand,” Julia says. This approach has seen readers connect with the brand, but more importantly, the readers are the ones who continue to inspire the brand to grow and develop.

“We really enjoy listening to the reader’s needs and what they like to read,” Julia says, “It inspires us, and then we try and make it all happen.”

Free People’s Fashion Writer, Jemma says the popularity of the brand has grown over the past six years, making her job a more exciting and creative place to work. The building is filled with stylish and inspiring energy, with each person adding their own uniqueness to the space.

SUMMER ISSUE 13

“A day for me involves researching fashion trends,” Jemma says, adding that a Free People kind of woman is someone who is “always open to curiosity and adventure.” “ She likes to be inspired and innovative and to stand out from the crowd, and doesn’t follow trends, she creates them.” Free People’s Décor Writer Brigette, loves coming into the building, where whitewashed brick walls and huge bright windows greet her every day, never knowing what or whom she’ll come across. “Everyone’s ideas always seem to come together beautifully and seamlessly,” says Brigette. With so much going on around us, Brigette maintains we should all focus on the simpler things in life and simply breathe, every once in a while. “Life is crazy, and that’s something that we can’t really control, but we can control the way we view it,” says Brigette staying true to the Philadelphia life style- to keep it simple. “Philadelphia is much more laid back,” says Jemma, “There’s an awesome art and music scene,” but for those who need a quick fashion fix they can hop over to New York in just two hours- talk about proximity!

If you’re anything like the Free People ladies, you’ll appreciate spending your days browsing shops with family and friends.

“There’s a lot of thriving brunching and crafting going on. Hanging out in parks is pretty necessary too,” Brigette says.

Preferring early mornings, Jemma loves a bike ride to her favourite place- Honey, and ends up “strolling around the flea markets in the afternoon,” she adds. Not short of bargain spot or appealing attractions Julia lets it be known that “Philly has some great vintage shops and lots of really great day-trip destinations just outside the city. And the first Friday of each month, my neighbourhood turns into a street art fair!”

So how do the lovely ladies deal with writer’s block? Through music of course and a beautiful position right on the water helps. “Just sitting by the dock looking out at the river can do wonders for clearing the mind,” Julia says.

Brigette feels blessed and boats, “every few days, I take a step back and tell myself-Yes, Brigette, this is seriously your job.”

A calming culture with creative minds abuzz daily, it’s not hard to see the attraction in Philadelphia.

If you find yourself in the states anytime soon perhaps it may be worth a visit for a few days or even months (if you are lucky) to rediscover the power of nature, beauty, and the simpler things in life.

HELENA ATHERTON

GIRL FROM THE SKY

STORY KATE LANIGAN

Page 43: COVET MAGAZINE ISSUE 13

Spending as much time in the air as she does on solid ground, jet setter and crowd pleaser Helena Atherton is flying high off the back of her #1 debut single on the Aria Club Charts.

I chat with the divine producer (and self-proclaimed wizard) about her clear love and passion for music, summer time and sky high, studded heels!

Her looks alone captivate, but when Helena gets her hands on a crowd and positioned behind the decks, those astrological components that make magic happen, ignite.

With sultry beauty and eyes that reel you into her soul- Helena gives you all that she has when she is performing.

Making history of late Helena was named the first ever female DJ/producer to snare the # 1 position on the Aria Club charts!

Riding off the back of her successes, Helena has a solid agenda to attend to- jetting off to Europe and the United States, gigs and festivals backed up all summer, and was just signed to the biggest dance agency in the USA, ‘Spin.’

With music brains, charisma and English charm to boot- the sky is the limit for this talented and sassy lady.

Big congratulat ions on your f i rst s ingle ‘Gir l From the Sky’ reaching #1 on the Aria club charts! How has l i fe been since you snagged this t i t le?

Thank you! It’s been amazing, a real achievement and a milestone for me in my career so far, so much has been happening it’s an exciting time. It makes all

the work, air mileage and late nights worthwhile, and drives me further to achieve more.

I have also just been signed by Spin Artist Agency in America- home to Avicii, Benny Benassi, Armin Van Buren. I have my first US tour pencilled in for December which is unreal as the scene is taking off there so I’m very excited to tackle the US.

I f I was to l isten to your iPod what would be on rotat ion on your playl ist?

I tend to put my potential DJ sets on my iPod, I do this as I like to study and know all the tracks I may play really well, to listen to when a vocal comes in, what the drop is like… if you know your tunes well it helps you a lot when you are mixing them.

I also put my own productions on my playlists so I can listen over and over and pick out any little thing that may need editing or changing.

Is i t t rue you played classical music, piano and cel lo as a kid? When did the progression into electro music take place?

Yes I played piano and cello, I used to carry around a cello case nearly the same size as me!

My progression into dance happened very early on. By the age of 12 I was listening to house music and techno and as I grew up my intense love for music grew with me. I have worked in the music industry in some way all of my working life.

What song would be the anthem to your chi ldhood?

Daft Punk ‘Around the World’ as it was my first real obsession of a dance music track and the very first record I bought. An all-time classic!

How would you describe your style?

I’m still a bit of a punk kid, I love tattoo’s ,studs and rips, but I also love a dress up, so my style comes under ‘glam rock’ if I were to give it a title.

Page 44: COVET MAGAZINE ISSUE 13

44

COVETMAGAZINE.COM.AU

I mix denim’s, leather, casual stuff and vintage with more expensive pieces.

I have a shoe obsession (like most girls) I have quite the Jeffrey Campbell collection!

The end to this statement would be… “I dress for….”

Myself! No other. I do not follow fashion trends per say, I wear what I like when I like.

My friend recently laughed at me rocking up to a family dinner in studded spike shoes, shiny disco pants and a fake fur jacket.

You seem to have this perfect balance of a relaxed yet rather glam sense of style. Big heels and lots of leather seem to be a favourite staple among your wardrobe. Would I correct?

Absolutely, my wardrobe has a lot of leather, casual cotton tees, big heals and loads of studs.

I mix this together to get a as you said relaxed glam look. I wear my hair styled messy but my nails are always manicured. That- just got out of bed with studded heels still on look.

You have beauti ful skin and a petite frame. How do you stay f i t and energized?

I train, doing kickboxing and Pilates, I eat very healthy and look after myself the best I can.

You have to when you are performing and touring on the road so much with little sleep.

You need to look good, it is part of the job and you have to be able to hack the pace, late nights and potential hangovers!

As wel l as having a no. 1 on the Aria clubs charts, you actual ly attended the star studded award show last year. How was that experience for you? Walking the red carpet and rubbing shoulders at the Arias?

The Arias were amazing. I had a great time and love to dress up! I was there supporting my good friends The Potbelleez who were nominated, so I was at their table for a sit down dinner.

It’s always a great networking opportunity at these events, so many different people from all sectors of the music industry in one place at one time, it’s good for making new contacts.

Who are some of your favourite Austral ian designers?

I love One Teaspoon, Sass and Bide, Maurie and Eve, Bec and Bridge, Friend of Mine, and Ksubi amongst others. Australia has some amazing designers!

What is i t that you do in order to stay true to your craft as a DJ?

I focus on the music above anything else, my sets, the tracks, tight mixing, edits, bootlegs, programming, reading the crowd and being visually entertaining. At the end of the day you are there to entertain and to make sure every person in that club has had a good night.

A good DJ can make or break a club night. I always do everything in my power to make sure I make their night.

With summer holding some of Austral ia’s biggest festivals is there one in part icular you look forward to the most?

I have been confirmed for The Big Day Out National Tour in January which is insane! I’m playing all states across Australia, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers are head ling and I’ll be playing the dance/boiler room with Kaskade, Bloody Beetroots, Nicky Romero and Morgan Page. I seriously can’t wait- it was a real honour to be included for the full tour.

What is the scripture inked on your arm? Tel l us about some of your tatts how many have you got now?

The scripted ink on my arm is in Latin and it represents different words to do with my name, star sign and birthday, saying- Helena, Light, Venus, Love, Music, Balance, Justice, Twenty Four.

It makes no sense to anyone but me which is just how I like it.

In all I have 10 tattoos in various places, including a large black rose on my back, a dove on my thigh, my arm script and a collection of smaller ones on my wrists and behind my ear.

Dream gig?

Tomorrowland! No question. It’s on my ‘to do’ list, whether it’s next year or in 3 years, I won’t stop until I’m playing main stage.

What is the al l-t ime crowd pleaser during summer t ime?

Free ice-cream for everyone!

Your favourite things about summer are?

The sun, the beach, wearing flip flops, and losing my studio tan.

I read somewhere you are a wizard? Do tel l !

Yes one of my tattoos represents my status as a wizard-it’s how wizards recognise one another. It’s a wizard thing you wouldn’t understand.

And last ly f inish these sentences for us

During summer you can’t leave the house without… sunnies no question

Always carry in your bag… pepper spray-you never know who is behind you.

Bikinis and the beach go hand in hand with… sand in your pants.

What are you coveting?

Now that would be telling…

She’s an ordinary girl, living an extraordinary life. The former Miss Universe runner up keeps things busy travelling, working, and building her own walk in wardrobe. Jesinta Campbell spoke with Covet journalist Snjezana Bobic about summer’s hottest fashion trends, what she’s coveting and where she’s heading.

We’ve seen a lot of colour trending this summer, what else do you think we should be wearing with al l these bold colours?

Colour is definitely big this season. Neon will be a big trend this summer, so incorporate this into your outfit either through your accessories or shoes. It can be as subtle or abrupt as you like.

What should we accentuate this season? Shoes, bags, accessories, makeup, hair, nai l pol ish?

Pay attention to all of it! The trick to getting a look right is in the detail. Always have a mani - Pedi, don’t wear too much make

up and have an awesome staple pair of shoes and a classic handbag that goes with all of your outfits.

JESINTA CAMPBELL

What do you think wi l l be the new trend this summer?

Prints are huge this summer- don’t be afraid to wear a bold printed pant, skirt of blazer. Have fun and experiment with the trend!

What’s your absolute favourite outf i t to wear during the summer months?

Bikinis! Being from the Gold Coast I live in my swimmers in the summer time. My advice to girls is to invest in a good quality swimsuit- my favourite designers at the moment are Isola by Megan Gale and Zimmermann.

How do you prepare for a big event with styl ing, make up, hair and the l ike? Any ‘go to’ products or r i tuals you tend to favour?

If I have a really special event I like to give my hair a “Charcoal” Guava treatment - I swear by it and it smells like roses too! I also lather my body in a tanned moisturiser for that nice summer glow, I love Asyana Tan extender, and it is all Australian and is an easy to use product. Also if you are short for time in the makeup department, keep the skin bronzed and dewy, apply lots of mascara and apply a bright bold lip. Tom Ford Red is a personal favourite of mine!

What celebrit ies styles do you admire and why?

I love Blake Lively- she always looks immaculate on the red carpet. Effortless and chic!

What’s the most inspirat ional thing you’ve learnt from fashion?

When I was in the Miss Universe Pageant the young lady who designed our swimsuits for the competition started designing swimwear after she was arrested in her home country of Iran at a house party for wearing a Western designed T-shirt. She had to leave the country to live with her Aunty in Dubai. The experience inspired her to design swimwear because she believed fashion was freedom and women should be allowed to express who they are through what they are wearing. Her story was so inspiring and made me realise how something so small, like having the freedom to wear whatever we want, can make such a big difference to your life. It’s a privilege we often take for granted.

Tel l us about your experience as Miss Universe Austral ia?

The miss Universe Pageant was an experience of a lifetime and something I will never forget! Representing Australia at the pageant was such a humbling experience, I met so many incredible people along the way and if it wasn’t for the competition I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today. It was an experience that came with its challenges- however the rewards are something I will be forever grateful for.

Congratulat ions on the BMW Caulf ield Cup Carnival Fashion and Social Ambassador t i t le this year! Tel l us a l i t t le about this? What in part icular do you love about Spring Racing Carnival?

Being the Social and Fashion ambassador for the Caulfield Cup Carnival was an exciting role. I kept everyone updated with everything racing and fashion, I attended most race days and got to enjoy everything the carnival has to offer. The thing I love most about Spring Racing is that the entire city of Melbourne comes alive, the atmosphere is fantastic and the race days

provide great entertainment, this year Adam Lambert and Eskimo Joe performed at Caulfield, and I get to catch up with friends and have a bet or two on the horses!

You have secured yourself a leading spot within the fashion industry. Is this something you have always wanted to be a part of?

Fashion has always fascinated me, it’s so spontaneous and fun and it’s an honour to be so heavily involved in the industry. I am constantly surrounded by creative, interesting and inspiring people.

What new projects are you working on?

As always I have to keep my lips sealed on new projects however I am currently enjoying the TV presenting, ambassadorial and modelling I am involved in. I love the fact that no two days are the same for me, it means I am constantly challenged and learning!

Christmas Day and NYE outf i ts this year, any ideas?

Summer is looking promising this year. I will sport young up and coming designers - anything with a lot of colour will be in my wardrobe this season, I love the tropical prints and neon influences.

What’s on your “to do l ist” when i t come to l i fe, love, fashion?

My bucket list is so long, don’t get me started! To keep it simple, this summer I am going to learn to surf- properly! I want to take a romantic getaway somewhere tropical and hot and fashion wise...I am currently installing a walk in robe in my unit. I can’t wait!

What are you currently coveting?

Neon Balenciaga sandals, oh and another trip to Mexico, my tan is starting to fade!

SUMMER ISSUE 13

Melbourne based DJ/Producer Jesus Loyola, talk’s family, South American beats and having to laugh off misconceptions about that name…

It’s the warmest day of the year so far and Melbournians are finally retiring from their winter quarters and moving out onto the streets of St.Kilda and Elwood. Beside the park in Ormond Road, among the shirts and skirts and sandals, I burst into a busy café, scouring the indoor chairs for Jesus Loyola. There he is, sitting patiently at one of the far tables with an unopened newspaper, smiling politely, immaculately dressed in double denim, and more striking than I had imagined. He stands up to shake my hand when I reach the table, laughing at my apologetic eye roll, before sitting down and turning briskly to the job at hand. “Coffee?” he asks, holding the attention of the waiter while I order my cappuccino.

At 32, with two kids at home, a working fiancée and a busy career in music, you could excuse Jesus Loyola for being impatient with a tardy journalist. But he’s an unlikely personality for an electronic musician- he shapes himself quickly as a man of substance, without the stereotypical bravado, and he’s happy to share his time with anyone who’s interested.

Aside from being a grown up DJ with an unusual name (it’s his real name, pronounced ‘heyzues’), Loyola works with several record labels producing remixes and occasionally, original music that started as “a mix between indie nu disco” but is now “more like deep house,” he says.

Loyola’s polarizing given name is the first major topic of discussion, after I admit that I’m a little apprehensive to try the pronunciation. “Believe me, I’ve thought about changing it,” he says, because coupled with his good looks, people mistake the name for a declaration. “When I order pizza, I just order under the name Jay, because people hang up if I say Jesus,” he laughs. “People think I’m claiming to be the son of god.”

Loyola’s first name is the most obvious legacy from his Chilean roots. He was born in Vina Del Mar, a costal town about an hours drive from Santiago, the Chilean capital, and while he feels a strong tie to ‘Vina’, he’s still waiting for his chance to visit South America again.

Loyola’s addiction to groove is both the driving force behind his production style and a way of connecting with his homeland - he’s always booking strange shows on a quest for salsa and jazz. “I’ve got the Cuban Jazz Festival coming up,” he says. “I’m looking forward to that, because I can add some South American flavour to the set.”

Of course, his love of South American culture transfers over to his production, which takes its influence from the contagious grooves in jazz and salsa music. “I’ll play anything with a bit of funk and groove in it,” he says.

Beyond the late nights and long weekends (Jesus books all the Dj’s at Baroque, and does long hours Dj’ing over the weekend), Loyola is also in the throes of fatherhood. It’s a job, as he describes, that changed his perspective. “It’s hard sometimes, being a dad during the week and a Dj on the weekend, but I’m blessed to have consistent work,” he says, turning to the waiter and asking if I’d like another coffee.

When Loyola mentions his children we’re about half way through our interview and the line of questioning completely changes. I realize immediately that Jesus Loyola is not your average Dj – he’s torn between two worlds, and increasingly adept at creating a working balance. He’ll be married in January, and as he sees it, “kids put everything into perspective. In the early days I wouldn’t have made much money, but now I’m responsible.“

As long as he continues “bringing in the bacon,” Loyola says his life is in order for now. With a bulging schedule of shows, a healthy backlog of production deadlines and a bunch of venues to book, it’s increasingly obvious that Jesus Loyola is in this for the long haul.

Once we are done with coffee, we walk past the register and out the front, to continue talking on the way back to our cars. There are kids playing in the adjacent park, and after peering over, it’s like his mind is thrust from his career back onto family life. “I better get back to it,” he says, before he shakes my hand and drives away.

KARL LAGERFELD

To coincide with the release of Lagerfeld’s new book we celebrate the iconic man behind the genius, and logo that makes ‘many hearts a flutter’ ... ahhh Chanel.

Behind all the controversy lies an eye for aesthetics and beauty and complete attention to detail. Those little things, which make everything, much like ‘The Little Black Jacket.’

It doesn’t matter if you know everything or nothing about fashion you have definitely heard the name, Karl Lagerfeld. A designer, artist, photographer, book publisher, Parisian bookshop operator and owner of the worlds utmost spoilt cat (Choupette his cat has his own Facebook fan page.)

Lagerfeld is a self-confessed over achiever. Apparently now 79 (no one can seem to confirm his age, he was either born in 1933 or 1939) and shows no signs of slowing down. Lagerfeld is the creative director at Chanel and has been since 1983, he is also creative director for Fendi. Apart from these two roles he has his own self-titled label, developed in 1984, which he sold to Tommy Hilfiger in 2005, but maintains full design involvement. His very latest project has just been released, which is his new book titled: The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Rotfield. The book is a series of photographs taken by Lagerfeld of celebrities wearing the classic Chanel jacket.

As if his resume isn’t impressive enough, Karl is famous for losing over 40 kilos in just over a year so that he could fit into clothes that were designed for ‘younger and slimmer men’.

After losing this immense amount of weight he wrote The Karl Lagerfeld Diet. Within a month of hitting the shelves the book sold over 20,000 copies and Lagerfeld claimed his biggest motivation for losing so much weight was fashion.

He was recently quoted in a magazine interview saying “I drink Diet Coke from the minute I get up to the minute I go to bed. I can even drink it in the middle of the night, and I can sleep.” Strange but true, much like his relationship with his pampered cat and some of the alarming calls he makes without trepidation.

His newfound slim confidence made him quite critical of others, as he told Focus Magazine in 2008 that high end fashion is about “dreams and illusions and no one wants to see round women.” Earlier this year he was publicly criticized for calling superstar singer Adele “a little too fat” and has reportedly sent her a collection of Chanel’s best handbags in a bid to apologise.

From controversy to more of the same, Lagerfeld was also in big trouble with PETA in 2009 over his use of fur in his designs, and defended the fur fashion industry and fur hunters by telling the BBC those hunters are “killing those beasts that would kill us if they could.”

His attention snatching quotes in interviews and public statements have brought him an immense amount of public attention. Some say they are simply preposterous others defend him by describing his memorable quotes as being said with a sense of self-mockery and self-awareness.

Whichever way you want to describe him, he sure has an earnest knack for gaining the attention of the public eye.

Love him or hate him he is here to stay and has, and will continue to make a lasting impression on the fashion industry. Whichever conclusions you draw regarding Mr. Karl Lagerfeld always remember his advice ‘Don’t dress to kill, dress to survive’.

LA LA LA LA LA LOLA….

BURSTING WITH BERRY GOODNESS

STORY KATE LANIGAN

Transforming her life from clubs to quinoa, the once aspiring DJ and makeup artist is now a celebrity nutritionist and author of not one but two cookbooks.

The latest 20/20 Diet details her Paleo inspired diet and includes recipes and tips on how to instil the plan into your life. More importantly the book was created out of Lola’s dedication to truly loving herself and ideally wanting to help others achieve the same results.

Adopting this ‘caveman’ eating plan, Lola dropped 3 dress sizes and shed over 20 kilos! The transformation seems miraculous however she encourages that it is totally achievable if you plan ahead and stay focused, and the health benefits reap rewards beyond feeling more confident in your bikinis.

“I have never felt better spiritually, mentally and physically” boasts Lola, assuring if you stick to her realistic method of an 80/20 balance you will feel and look amazing.

When summer rolls in many of us become more conscious about what we eat and of course bearing a little more skin -so we thought why not speak to an expert on the matter?!

Over tea and raw coconut bars I had an inspiring chat with the vivacious blonde herself, about summer, berries and of course, fabulous fashion moments.

Lola has a unique sense of style much like her personality. When not in her running or yoga gear Berry pops with spunk and colour, preferring soft silks, bunches of bracelets and head pieces, and when she is being dressed for an appearance, all Lola asks is “please make me look like a whimsical fairy.”

“Just recently I wore these jeans on television that we called the forest jeans, because they were covered in trees,” she adds that “as long as I am comfortable I am cool.”

Lola is taken care of by the wonderful people at Husk whenever she has a media event or television appearance and feels “super lucky” to be decked out in their beautiful pieces.

Once a regular on The Circle and appearing on television and radio both here and internationally year round, this step into media and presenting took a lot of practice!

So how did this transformation take its form? It started with a summer detox some six years ago.

“I wanted to learn more about fruits and veggies and a friend encouraged me to study nutrition. From there I started my course and was living out of home with no money- so I started working three jobs, all so I could save up to buy a video camera.”

Lola woke up every morning and filmed herself talking about her breakfast. Her boyfriend at the time told her she was “rubbish” on camera, but persistent as she is Lola

Page 67: COVET MAGAZINE ISSUE 13

just kept practising and ended up with loads of footage. A friend turned this footage into a web series which blew her status-and now career into full speed. From then it’s been an adventure of travelling, filming, and eventually landing regular media appearances.

Due to such overwhelming demand and popularity her website crashed not long into its launch, leading to the publication of Lola’s first cookbook.

With book No.2 out and (recently ranked the bestselling diet book in the country and on iTunes), Lola describes the creation as a “defining moment, letting go of growing up baggage” and finding a sense of love within herself.

Fashion is another love in Lola’s life referring to it as “being able to speak without words,” that fabulous freedom of expressing who you are through colours, trends and fabrics. “I love, love, love fashion and feel very blessed to be able to intertwine it into what I do.” When playing dress ups she loves to accessorize and wear bright colours to enhance her mood.

Lola names Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood as ultimate designers to be dressed in, and credits the white Husk dress worn on her latest book cover as a favourite outfit.

Lola’s fashion rules are as follows: Love what you are wearing, enjoy the fashion blunders as well, and the most important thing people forget to wear is a smile!

Berry’s advice for all those attempting to lose weight or maintain a healthy balance during summer is broken down into 5 steps:

1. Throw out any packeted products in your cupboard containing ingredients that you can’t understand. Food is not designed to outlive you!

2. Drink more water! A litre for every 22kg you weigh per day

3. Have fun with it- think balance. 80% really clean 20% treat yourself-have that night out with your mates or that ice cream you have been craving

4. Have more coconut oil. It actually speeds up your metabolism and helps burn fats

5. Eat chilli - it’s another metabolism speed racer and keeps energy levels high as well.

Through sips of water Lola opens up about some of her travel experiences, reflecting on some fashion and food moments, acknowledging Hawaii for a top food moment. Lunching on the island of Waimanalo Lola ordered “The Garden Salad- that took 20 minutes to prepare because they were cutting the ingredients straight out of their backyard!” Attending ‘Fashion Week’ in LA last year got the mention for stand out fashion moment.

After shedding 20 kilos shopping is now more fun for Lola too “there is nothing better than being able to walk in to a shop knowing you can pretty much wear anything you pick up.” That being said the overall feeling from eating and living a healthy life makes Lola feel complete and it shows, she oozes enthusiasm, is literally exited by all elements of life and “totally loves what I do.”

So is there anything someone so fulfilled is coveting? “A holiday that does not involve work, I will be heading to Byron soon with no lap top in tow.”

SUMMER ISSUE 13

Can you tel l COVET a bit about your background and what your chi ldhood was l ike growing up?

I was born in Nigeria in 1987, lived there for ten months and moved to Australia in 1988 with my family. We moved around a lot in Australia when I was a kid, my dad was always working as an academic, lecturing in Canberra, Perth, Darwin, back to Canberra, so there was a lot of travel.

Where did you get your amazing musical talents from?

The origins would be my family, being around music and my culture. There was a lot of music in the household, my family is very Christian, a very gospel family, so there was always singing and dancing in the house. When I was around ten, my parents had an African style family band that I was part of, so from a very early age I was always around entertainment.

Have you always been interested in music and performing?

Most definitely, when I was 10 or 11 years old I watched Michael Jackson for the first time and that just completely changed the game for me. I was like that’s what I want to do! So I started mimicking him and started trying to do MJ moves.

Where did the name ‘ ’Timomatic’’ come from?

I was 15 or 16 years old, living in Canberra at the time and a few mates of mine started calling me ‘’O-matic’’. The reason why was quite unclear but it had something to do with my dancing. I really didn’t have any sort of say in the matter, it was just a nickname that kind of came out, and then people were like who is this ‘’O-matic’’ guy that people keep talking about? And

my mates were like oh that’s Tim and then somehow they got fused together. I never said ‘Oh man it should be Timomatic’, it was really weird it just happened and it stuck so I was like right that’s what it is.

You made it to the Top 8 on So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) 2009, which must have been an awesome accomplishment for you! How would you rate your experience on the show and why did you choose to audit ion?

I did SYTYCD because my mum said I should do the show. She was like you’re doing all these shows and you’re doing all these things, but no one knows who you are, you need to get out there, you need to get exposure. So I did the show and it was cool. I think what it taught me was how to perform under pressure, how to perform in front of a camera and it just gave me that boost I needed to kind of get inside the door.

Even at that point, my focus was the music and how to start my music career, to get people’s attention, and in terms of music shows at the time, there was only Australian Idol and that was about the ninth season. I thought- no that show is done, so SYTYCD was the freshest show to do at the time.

You also appeared as a contestant on Austral ia’s Got Talent last year, what made you decide to audit ion after having already been on one real i ty talent show?

I needed to re-establish myself as an artist. After I did the dance show I still tried to get gigs as a singer and people were like, what the hell? You’re a dancer man, we don’t want you to sing, you’re known for your dancing! And so I thought, I need to do something to change the perception and to show people exactly what I can do, hence ‘Australia’s Got Talent’.

What would you say has been your greatest career accomplishment to date?

I’d say writing my debut single, which went three times platinum and was released in 27 countries.

I f you had to pick to either sing or dance for the rest of your l i fe which one would you choose?

You know it changes, but right now I’d probably choose dancing, because dancing is a universal language. No matter where you are around the world people can understand it.

You’re certainly cl imbing your way up the Aussie charts-do you have any plans to break into the international market?

Most definitely. The plan to go global has been a goal from the get go. I’ve done the rounds, travelled to China, Germany, London, Mexico, New Zealand, LA and it’s about just trying to find a way in and getting the right song, the right collaborations and meeting the right people.

Who or what inspires you in your l i fe and in performing?

Apart from Michael Jackson I’ve got a mix of inspirations, because I write music as well and I choreograph the performances, I like people like Ne-Yo who do that as well, who write music and also perform their music. Usher’s an inspiration, and then on the other side of the scale I’m very much inspired by people like Coldplay and The Script and rock bands that just write incredible, melodical songs that people really connect with.

Who would be your dream art ist/art ists to col laborate with?

I’d say the top two would be Beyonce and Kanye West.

I f you weren’t a musician/dancer what other career path would you l ike to fol low?

I’d probably be good as a motivational speaker and getting people geared up!

What have you learned from your experience and t ime in the entertainment industry?

Be single! (Laughs) No, what I have learnt is that the

entertainment industry is a beast man. As soon as it invites you in, it can spit you out like that! It’s very fickle, and it’s the most hardworking, dedicated, humble people that last in the end. That’s what I’ve seen.

What are your goals for the future? Is act ing something you would try? You could become a tr iple threat!

(Laughs) Well I did acting, I acted in the musical Fame, but I’d love to do movie acting and TV acting. I got a call to do an audition to play Tupac Shakur for a movie that was shooting, but I couldn’t do it because I was on tour at the time. So I think yeah I’m definitely waiting for the right moment to really give my acting a go.

What is the greatest advice you have ever been given and do you have any advice for aspir ing musicians and dancers?

The greatest advice I’ve ever been given is probably from a mentor of mine that said, two things you always need to keep with you that will keep you in the game are hunger and humility. Always stay hungry to learn more, be the hungriest, work the hardest, want the most and be humble about it. Be a nice dude, understand that it’s about people and it’s about influencing people.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I had a teenage crush on Scary Spice, Mel B. She was super hot back in the day.

How do you l ike to unwind after a long day and what do you l ike to do in your free t ime?

I like to just kick back and watch a lot of movies, a lot TV shows. It’s like my thing. Specifically TV shows, Breaking Bad- that is out of control!

What are you currently coveting at the moment?

Shoes, kicks. I can’t get enough man. And my girlfriend, I definitely crave her, my girl, my boo. In terms of what I like to indulge in, I’d have to say, good food.
