Delta Kappa Epsilon is not just another

MIT fraternity. DKE is richer in tradition,

achievement and pride than almost any frater-

nity here. Founded in 1844 and established at

MIT in 1890, it is one of the oldest and

strongest fraternities at MIT. DKE is not great

because it is old - it is old because it is great.

At the Sigma Tau chapter of DKE,

brotherhood enriches our experiences and

helps to guide us toward our personal aspira-

tions. Dekes develop integrity, responsibility,

scholarship, and social excellence. DKE is not

interested in mediocrity; we seek excellence.

We take pride in being Dekes.

Your acceptance to MIT and your

choice to attend show that you have the acade-

mics and drive to succeed. Now you have the

chance to join over 70,000 brothers reknowned

worldwide for their pride and success.

Dekes excel in a variety of interests andactivities. We are a brotherhood that does not sup-press individual characteristics or interests. Sup-port is found throughout the brotherhood in all ofour endeavors and achievements, and tutoring andadvice are always available from upperclassmen.Through our experiences and support for oneanother, we have formed a bond which is guaran-teed to last. As one of our mottos states: Once aDeke, always a Deke.

Beyond our brotherhood, we have theadvantage of being one of the only MIT fraternitiesto entirely own our impressive chapter house whichfeatures:

A good college education undoubtedly entails more thanjust academics. Although studying is necessary at MIT,it need not become a preoccupation. Dekes enjoy anextensive social life without neglecting their educationalpriorities. At DKE, we have numerous large theme par-ties and a weekly pub night. There are a variety of for-mal and semi-formal dinners, so that brothers can enter-tain dates at the house. We frequently get house ticketsto sports events, and also go to Killington for an annualski trip. And of course, we fill our schedule with sorori-ty mixers and informal parties on a weekly basis.

Dekes succeed. Although we like to have fun, academics isa priority. As a member of DKE, men inherit a heritage of distin-guished predecessors unmatched in the fraternity world. Over 50Dekes have served in the Senate, over 140 have served in theHouse of Representatives, and 50 have served as State Governors. In addition, the U.S. has been represented to 36 countries byambassadors who are Dekes. Dekes also built the first fraternityhouse in North America, were the first to reach the North Polewith Robert Peary, and have brought the DKE flag to the moonwith Alan Bean.

MIT Dekes are equally impressive. Many brothers are infive-year Masters Degree and MIT co-op programs. Membersgraduate to careers at Microsoft, Intel, J.P. Morgan, IBM,Bankers Trust, Fidelity Investments, BMW, and top quality grad-uate schools such as Harvard Medical and Business.

Though his athletic prowess is no mystery, Trei contin-ually amazes us with his legendary status as a true chick magnet.

Dave GibbonsClass of 2001Another diehard Broncos fan from Denver, CO, Dave is majoring inMaterials Science. Though he wouldn’t tell you himself, Dave hasachieved National Competitor status as a skilled pairs figure skater, and placed 1st in the New England Regional Pairs Competition. Hisfigure skating talent allowed him to pick up IM hockey quickly, and isour best explanation for the countless women he brings by the DKEhouse. Next year, Dave will be returning to Colorado, where he willbe working towards a Masters degree at the University of Colorado.

Lew and JackBrothers Lewis Gosmon and John “Jack” Jackson have been with our

house for 60 and 50 years, respectively, and provide the traditionalbackbone on which our Brotherhood is built and continues to grow.Lew, our Housefather, is at the house every week to check up on theBrothers and recant the tales of the Deke house from before our time.

Quite the gentleman, Lew always makes sure that our lady friendsare well taken care of. Jack also remains an integral part of our

chapter. Though retired, Jack comes by during finals week to makesure his Brothers go into their exams with the finest breakfast in thestate of Massachusetts. Jack plays to a standing-room-only crowdwhenever he reminisces about his experiences during WWII. Lew

Last summerTodd worked for Lawrence Livermore Labs under the CAPS Programresearching the potential creation and use of chemical weapons.

Ron KapustaClass of 2001With the fiercest slap shot in MIT Varsity hockey, "Poosta" of Lans-dale, PA, is a scoring machine. Ron frequents all of the local women’scolleges, and manages to never miss a party. He spends most of histime lifting and watching his precious Flyers. This, of course, is inaddition to his Computer Science and Electrical Engineering work, which doesn’t seem to phase him considering his 5.0 GPA. This fall,Ron will stay in Boston to begin working on his MEng degree.

Gene MehrClass of 2001From Bedford, NH, "Landsloth" is one of the star defensive linemenfor the MIT Varsity Football team. While he played Varsity track, soccer, and basketballin high school, MIT's Mechanical Engineering program has taken pri-ority for now. However, he still has time to dominate in practically allIM sports. In his free time, Chip wards off the scores of ladies fromSimmons and Wellesley to drink and hang out with his friends andlong-time girlfriend. How he resists so many chances with the ladiesmakes us all jealous, but his devotion to Kristen has proven solid.

FROM THE BROTHERS OF THESIGMA TAU CHAPTER OF DELTA KAPPA EPSILON

We urge you to participate in Residence Week. We are very proud of theMIT fraternity system. We are also very proud of the Sigma Tau chapter of DeltaKappa Epsilon and we would like to show you why we think it is the best. The deci-sion to pledge a fraternity will benefit you for the rest of your life.

The DKE house does not feel or look like any other house or MIT dorm.We enjoy the character of our house with its distinguished wood and brass archi-tecture. Our rooms are spacious and we never crowd many brothers into one room. All rooms are either singles or two-room doubles and triples. Because we own ourhouse entirely, we have the flexibility to change, set up and personalize our roomsin any way imaginable. Our house has the largest roofdeck which is ideal for par-ties, hanging out and talking, or impressing women. Our fifth floor balcony thatspans the entire riverfront side of our house is impressive as well.

Regardless of how close our house is to MIT, it is still a place to relax andescape from the stress of everyday Institute life. We are glad that the unique com-fort of our home is only a two minute walk from classes and is also directly adja-cent to all of MIT’s athletic facilities. We are able to retreat to our home to catchup on sleep, or to finish last minute work or errands between each of our classes,or before sports and meetings. We are also able to avoid the high priced and lessthan tasty food served in MIT cafeterias by being able to come home for lunch (pre-pared 3 different times a day to fit into any of our busy schedules) by our excellentchef. His food is some of the best food we have ever tasted. Furthermore, after agrueling sports practice, your tired body is as close as possible to your own home, shower, and bed.

All of the benefits and accommodations mentioned in this book are includ-ed in our housebill and thus we have much more to offer at a lower price thanMIT’s dormitory room and board. We take the responsibility of running our houseourselves and managing all chapter affairs. Regular house meetings are held tomake important decisions, and freshman rapidly learn how to contribute to thehouse by assisting house officers in performing their duties.

Our pledge-training program is designed to familiarize freshman with whatthey need to know about MIT, Boston, and Delta Kappa Epsilon. Each freshmanchooses a big brother who closely helps him adjust to college life. Freshmen takepart in all house matters, and in a short time become an integral part of the DKEhouse.

Please feel free to contact us or stop by anytime. Give us a call for informa-tion on Brothers located near you and on summertime rush events in your area.

We’ll see you during RUSH.
