You can’t help but notice the serenity that surrounds you when you visit Wells Mills County Park, Waretown. From the majestic trees of the pine and oak forest to the beautiful Wells Mills Lake, the centerpiece of the park located in the Pine Barrens, this 900 acre site is truly an environmental jewel. When you are there you want to learn more about the park, its environ-ment, the ecology, the history and that is where the Nature Center at Wells Mills County Park comes into play. Whilethethree-storyNatureCenteroffersagreatdisplayfloor,alibrary,andthethirdfloor“ElizabethMeirsMorganObservationDeck”,recentlydedicat-edinhonorofanactivenaturalistandconservationistinOceanCounty,timehasalso taken its toll on it leading to the county’s plans of a needed upgrade. The nature center was constructed in 1989. The renovations were suggested as part of a county-wide structure assessment. “Withsomanyparkvisitorswanting to learnmoreabout thisparkandits environmental assets, improving the nature center will surely improve the parkexperienceforourvisitors,”saidOceanCountyCommissionerVirginiaE.Haines,chairwomanoftheOceanCountyDepartmentofParksandRecreation.“Thescopeofworkisextensivebutoncecompleteditwillserveourresidents,visitorsandstaffforyearstocome.” Hainesemphasizedthatvisitorscanstillregisterforprogramsattheparkandparkstaff,whichhavemovedintoatrailertemporarilywhiletheworkisun-derway, is available during the renovation work. Renovations to the 2,873 square foot building that overlooks the lakeinclude extensive improvements to the observation deck which will be enclosed. Asecondflooradditionforaconferenceroomaboveanopenexhibitspacewillbe constructed. All new heating, ventilation and air conditioning will be installed alongwithanewelevator.Improvementswillbemadetothebathrooms,flooring,and lighting. “Thereisreallynoareaofthecenterthatwillnotbeimproved,fromthereceptionarea to theexhibit space to thestaffoffices,”Hainessaid. “Wearealsomakingcertain the improvementsareenergyefficient including replacingalllightingwithhighefficiencyLEDlighting.Whenthisworkisdonewewillonceagain have a welcoming place for our visitors to come to attend environmental programsandclasseshighlightingtheuniquenessofthispark,”shesaid. WellsMillsCountyPark,offRoute532,Waretown,hasthedistinctionofbeingthelargestparkintheOceanCountyparksystemwithover900acresofpine and oak forest within southern New Jersey’s environmental marvel known asthePineBarrens.Milesofhikingtrailswithvaryingdegreesofdifficultycanbefound there. Canoe rentals are also available at a nominal cost. It is also home totheAnnual“PineBarrensJamboree”everyOctober. “TheOceanCountyParkssystem,whichisoperatedbytheOceanCoun-tyBoardofCommissioners,includes27parks,”Hainesnoted.“Eachofthemhasuniquefeaturesofferingsomethingdifferenttoallofourresidentsandvisitors.Wewanttomakesureweareofferingtheverybestwhenitcomestorecreation-alareasandactivitieshereinOceanCounty.” The contractor for the work at the nature center is J. H. Williams of Moorestown.Theanticipatedcompletionisthefallof2022.

Despite ever-increasing development pressure, the OceanCountyNaturalLandsTrustcontinuestoacquireandpreserveproper-tiesinnorthernTomsRivertoprotectwaterwaysandwildlifehabitats.TheNaturalLandsTrust targets landalongtheTomsRiverCorridor,andthreerecentacquisitionshaveaddedtothepreservationarea. Namedafterapaperstreetthatnevercametofruition,the5-acreSayrevilleStreetwasacquiredby theNaturalLandsTrust inAugust2019.ClevelandStreetI&IIwereacquiredinNovember2018andMay2021respectively,andtotal9.26acres.TheyareonthenorthernsideofClevelandStreetandoffofWhitesvilleRoad.Thesepreserveswillcontinueservingasavaluableforestedriparianbufferandserveasagroundwaterrechargearea,feedingtheKirkwood-Cohanseyaquiferthat supplies drinking water in the region.

Hunting on Natural Lands Trust Properties OceanCountyNaturalLandsTrustprovideshuntingopportunitiesinvariousformsonapproximately22,715acresoralmost88%ofallownedproperties.OCNLTareopento some formof hunting includingbowandarrow, shotgunandmuzzleloader.Prop-erties are evaluated for hunting on an annual basis. This review includes newly pur-chased properties as well as existing properties in which neighboring property uses havechanged.Thereviewalsoconsidersproperty-specificcomplaintsorissuesidenti-fiedduringtheyear.Evaluationcriteriaincludepropertyacreage,proximitytoneighbor-ingdevelopment,safetyzones,localregulations,siteaccessibility,andnon-compatibleuses including trails or paddling corridors. Hunting is allowed consistent with state and local regulations. The County maintains a prohibition on hunting on Sundays. Deer driv-ingisonlyallowedduringthe6-dayfirearmseasonandislimitedtopropertiesidentifiedas safe and compatible to this use. Property visitors should refer to the most currently adoptedversionoftheOceanCountyParksandNaturalLandsTrustRulesformoreinformation.

TheOceanCountyBarnegatBranchTrail isa15.6 linearpark thatwillpro-videascenicpedestrianandbicycle journeyfromSouthTomsRiver toBar-negatTownship.Thisprojectstartedin2007,andhasbeenamulti-departmen-talcommitteeofEngineering,Planning,Security,Cultural&HeritageandtheOceanCountyParks&Recreation.

The park is enjoyed by the public and is easily accessible from the various communitiesalongtheroute.Guestscanwalkashortorrelativelylongdis-tance in safe and friendly surrounding under a canopy of native trees and over several beautiful stream crossings. The stream crossing allow for traveler to visit the home of Atlantic White Cedar.

Public amenities such as rest room facilities and exercise stations, have been builtandmoreareinvariousstagesofdevelopmentalongthepath.TheOceanCountyBoardofCommissionershasmadeasignificantinvestmentintheBBTsince2007including$7.8millioninacquisitionanddevelopmentfundstodateandatleastanother$2.5milliontocompletethe15.9milesby2024.ThiscosthasbeenoffsetwithanumberofsignificantgrantsfromFederalandNewJer-sey governments.

VisitorsalsotravelthroughtherichhistoryandevolvingstoryofOceanCounty.Currently,55interpretativepanelsincludinganinterpretativecenteratCountryLane in Waretown provide information of the past hidden in plain site along the trail and connections to other parks and facilities such as Wells Mills County Park,DoubleTroubleStateParkand theLighthouseCenter forNaturalRe-sourceEducation.See:https://bit.ly/BarnegatBranchTrailSignsYou can explore past features of the railroad such as the water tower and turn table.YoucanalsoseethesiteoftheonlyglassfactoryinOceanCountyandlearn the history of each town you pass through including famous taverns and innssuchastheRoyalPinesHotel.Anotherdozenpanelswillbeaddedastheremaining sections of the trail are completed.

The Barnegat Branch Trail connects with a several other county and township parks such as Lochiel County Park in Barnegat, Hebrew Park in Lacey and Dudley Park in Berkeley. The trail will also connect with the existing rail trail through Beachwood.

RobertMcKinleyhas reachedamilestoneof loyal service in hisongoingcareerwithOceanCounty.HisservicebeganwiththeOceanCountyParksandRecreationDepartmentonJuly1,1959asLaboreratOceanCountyPark,Lakewood.Bobbystated,”itwasthehappiestdayofmylifewhenAubreyClayton(formerParksDirector)calledtotellmeIwashired”.RobertMcKinleyhasachievedthepromotiontoHeavyEquipmentOperator,hecontinuestostrivetobeautifyandmaketheparksbettereach day for our residents and visitors. Bobby has seen the Parks Department grow with new facilities, has weatheredmanystorms,includingSuperStormSandyin2012,andhas set an example for so many County employees. 1. Recreation personnel in charge of each program will have the final decision in all matters, especially where participant safety is concerned.2. Due to the strenuous nature of some of our activities, recreation personnel reserve the right to deny a participant entry into a program. If the participant has already paid a fee, this fee will be reimbursed in accordance with our refund/credit policy.3. Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited on all recreational programs.4.
