… was applied to replicate thewell-ordered diphenylalanineflower-like architecture by Aunanoparticles. After removing thedipeptide templates, an Au crustwas left with a similar morphologyto that of the dipeptide hierarchi-cal structure. Such morphology cangive rise to useful and remarkablesurface-enhanced Raman spectro-scopy (SERS) properties. Thisstrategy broadens the applicationof biomaterials in surface science. For more details see the Full Paperby J. Li et al. on page 3370 ff.

TRENsettersIn their Full Paper on page 3364 ff. , R. Mulvey and co-workers report on how tris(N,N-dimethyl-2-aminoethyl)-amine (Me6TREN) functions as a scaffold for the com-plexes PhCH2M (M =Li, Na, K). It is shown that as the sizeof the alkali metal increases, the solvated metal cation grad-ually slips from the lateral carbanionic carbon to the aro-matic p system.

Structure–Activity RelationshipsThe synthesis of new stilbenophanes has been accomplishedby using the McMurry methodology to produce analoguesof antimitotic combretastatins. The presence of a bridgebetween para–para positions modifies the dynamics of thesemolecules in comparison with those of non-macrocyclic stil-bene analogues. Conformational analysis of these com-pounds was carried out by taking into account ring flips, ring rotations and the effect of the bridge; these resultswere in agreement with the molecular calculations andNMR spectra. For more details see the Full Paper by M.Medarde, R. Pelez et al. on page 3406 ff.

PhotochromismIn their Communication on page 3358 ff., X.-T. Wu et al.describe the preparation of two new 3D ZnII complexeswith pillared structures from the same precursors at differ-ent temperatures under hydrothermal conditions. The twocomplexes exhibit reversible radical-based redox photo-chromism varying from yellow to bluish-violet and darkblue, respectively, and fluorescence with adjustable inten-sity. The redox photochromic mechanisms of these com-plexes have been explored.
