Oxley lifts Barbados past Curacao to start beaver-trick bid

RIVIERE-SALEE, Martinique, December 8, 2019: Team captain and Outside Hitter, Akeel Oxley

led from the front as three-time reigning champions and five-time winners Barbados made a

winning start to their campaign at the 2019 Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA)

Junior (Under-21) Men Championship.

Playing in the opening match of the six-team competition and in Group C, Barbados came away

with a 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 25-15) defeat of a feisty Curacao at the La Ville Riviere-Salee

Palais Des Sport in one hour and 31 minutes.

The contest was as close as the scoreline suggested as Barbados, previous champions in the

inaugural competition in 1997 followed by 2005, 2013, 2015 and the last time it was held in

2017/18 season had to claw their way back from 4-8 and 15-18 deficits in the opening set, and 4-

8 again in the fourth set before earning the win with Oxley being well supported by Raje Alleyne,

to the relief of long-serving coach John Stuart.

Speaking after the entertaining contest which despite serving off 15 minutes late satisfied the

appetite of the small crowd for what is expected to be a week of exciting volleyball, Stuart said he

was very happy for his team to get the win against a good team.

“We played against a very consistent opponent and even though we were not at our best level, we

are delighted to get the win.

“The level of the match between both teams was very high and now we are looking at improving

for our next match.

Oxley, the nephew of former Barbados stand-out and current team assistant coach, Elwyn Oxley

said he too was delighted for the victory.

“Being the reigning “Most Valuable Player” it was important for me to come out and lead my team

from the front, and we are just glad for the win against a very strong opponent”, stated the younger

Oxley.

Joshua Van Henneigen, the captain of Curacao said his team did not make full use of the chances

presented to them due to a lack of confidence.

“Even though we were facing a tough opponent we started well and then we wasted a lead and our

confidence level dropped.”

Coach Henrich Daal added, “It’s not a shame to be beaten by the champions in your first match.

We now see what level we have to be at to be the champions and we have a chance to come back

in the next match with better preparation.”

Barbados next faces Guadeloupe on Monday, December 9 from 4 pm while Curacao will meet

Guadeloupe a day later to close out round-robin pool play at the end of which the top team qualifies

directly to the semifinals on Thursday, December 12, and the second and third-placed finishers to

the quarterfinals on Wednesday, December 11.

Trinidad and Tobago over-come injury to silence Martinique U-21 men

RIVIERE-SALEE, Martinique, December, 8, 2019: Trinidad and Tobago captain Joshua Persaud

and his team-mates dug deep to overcame an injury to key player, Opposite Elijah Best for a 3-1

(25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 26-24) win over host Martinique in their Pool B opener of the 2019

Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Junior (Under-21) Men Championship at La

Ville Riviere-Salee Palais Des Sport.

The fifth-placed finishers in 2017/2018 when the competition was last held in Barbados, Trinidad

and Tobago were able to manage their game better than the host nation and won the key points

when need to get the better of the 1999 winners who are also seeking to improve on their bronze

medal last time out.

Persaud speaking after his team victory which left the home supporters stunned said his team had

to come out very positive to have a chance against the host country.

“We knew to play Martinique in front of their crowd was going to be tough and by winning the

first set we built our momentum and continued from their own.

“Best picked up an injury and he is one of our key players, but the guys all came together and

pulled through for him.”

Assistant coach, Curtis Burkette commenting on the win said his team worked very hard for the

win.

“We suffered a setback in losing a key player in Best during the match, but it motivated the players

to fight even harder which helped us to get over the bump.”

Gael Melinard, the coach of Martinique said the match was much more difficult for his players

than they first expected.

“The guys also seemed afraid and we didn’t manage every point as we should and made too many

mistakes which in the end cost us the match.”

Captain of the Martinique team, Mathias Melinard, the son of the coach said the battle between

both teams was a very close one, but his team was not able to make the winning difference when

needed.

“We made too many unforced errors, and Trinidad and Tobago did well.”
