The Lunchbox LegacyThe sight of a metal lunchbox is a

source of nostalgia for many peoplewho carried one to school or work.

Beginning in the late 1800s, workersand children packed their lunches incloth, wicker baskets, metal pails andtins. In 1902, the first true lunchbox wassold. Created for kids, it was made ofmetal, resembled a picnic basket andfeatured images of playing children.

The design of these containerschanged in the following years. Thefamiliar dome-shaped worker’s lunchboxwith a thermos bottle for keepingbeverages hot or cold debuted in 1911.Then in 1935, the first lunchbox toshowcase a licensed character came onthe market in the form of an oval metaltin decorated with Mickey Mouse andhis friends.

School lunches were forever changedin 1950, the year that Aladdin Industriesproduced a square metal lunchbox with apicture of TV cowboy Hopalong Cassidy. With 600,000 sold in the first year, theproduct proved that lunchboxes andentertainment went hand in hand.

Old-Time JobsThat Are New Again

Despite economic changes andadvances in technology, manytraditional jobs that begandecades or centuries ago areseeing a boost in business.

Butcher. Before supermarketswere common, neighborhoodbutchers prepared fresh cuts ofmeat for customers. With many oftoday’s consumers desiring locallysourced food, butcher shops aremaking a comeback.

Blacksmith. The ancient practiceof forging objects from iron nearlyfaded away when machines begandoing the work, but a trend inhandcrafted metalwork hasrevived the trade.

Milkman. Many homes hadfresh bottles of milk delivered totheir door until grocery stores andrefrigerators made the servicenearly obsolete by the 1970s. Thecurrent farm-to-table movementhas some farms offering homedelivery of their milk anddairy products.

Cobbler. Shoemakers have beenmaking footwear by hand forcenturies, and specialty shops stillcater to customers who wanthandmade goods or prefer torepair rather than replace a pairof shoes.

A Grilling OriginalIt’s called the

innovation that madeoutdoor grilling abackyard tradition. In1951, George Stephen ofChicago invented thenow-iconic dome-shapedcharcoal grill using ametal boating buoy thatwas cut in two. He usedone half for cooking andthe other half as a lid, which helped control thegrill’s heat and smokeand provided protectionfrom the elements.Although an oddity whenit was first sold in 1952,Stephen’s Weber Kettlegrill has since become themost popular grill in theworld.
