DESCRIPTION

The Heritage Open Days weekend will soon once again be upon us, with events across the county and a whole host of venues opening their doors to visitors. The event, now in its 16th year, takes place over the weekend of September 11th – 12th. With 29 venues confirmed across Coventry and surrounding areas, all of whom will be welcoming guests in free of charge to many places that are usually closed to the public or that at other times charge an entrance fee. From Social History trails at Coombe Abbey, to grow and cook demonstrations in Allesley Parks Walled Gardens and guided city tours, it’s a fantastic chance to delve into the past and heritage of Coventry and surrounding areas. There’s also a fantastic competition to win a Nintendo DSi console and free game; look out for more in the Friday 3rd September edition of the Coventry Telegraph for more details.

Welcome to the 16th Heritage Open Days weekend in Coventry.

Once again, Coventry is proud to be part of this national event organised in conjunction with The Civic Trust and English Heritage.

Heritage Open Days is organised by volunteers and is England’s biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event, attracting some 800,000 people every year.

Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties that are either not usually open or would normally charge an entrance fee. Heritage Open Days also includes tours, events and activities that focus on local architecture and culture.

Coventry Heritage Open Days 2010 Committee.

The Heritage Weekend event is organised by a committee of mostly volunteers who represent many aspects of history and who give their time freely to make the weekend happen and include the Coventry Society, plus others, in addition to those from both Coventry City Council and Coventry Cathedral.

The event is chaired and jointly run by Karen Aspin, Events Manager at CV One and Roger Bailey, a regional Blue Badge Tourist Guide. Helping over the weekend will be members of the Coventry Guild of Tour Guides, all of whom have qualified to be tourist guides with a Coventry Green Badge.

Committee Members: Karen Aspin, Roger Bailey, Stevie Keith, John Haslam, Hazel Lynn, Andrew Peel, Jessica Pinson, Steve Bagley, Marcus Lynch, Nick Chavasse, Sue Mann, Julie Richards.

The Herbert Art Gallery has been offered the opportunity to purchase an exquisite album of watercolours painted in Coventry in 1819 - 1820 by the artist William H Brooke. This previously unknown album is probably one of the most important single collections of topographical images of historic Coventry, providing new information and perspectives on the buildings and landscape of Coventry in the early 19th Century. The Herbert is now seeking £12,000 to purchase and make this album ready for display. Please help us retain it for Coventry by donating either on line at http://www.thebiggive.org.uk/charity.php?charity_id=7343, or by sending a donation to:

George Miles MemorialGeorge Miles became a Coventry Green Badge Tourist Guide in 1990 and since then, had played a important part in promoting the city of Coventry to visitors from around the World. This included many from places twinned with our city, for which he had a passion for. His death is a sad loss to his family and to the city, especially the part he played in promoting local heritage on Heritage Open Day weekends. He will be forever remembered giving guided tours of the Undercroft in his monks outfit. We have dedicated this event to George and all those involved in its running will be thinking of him.

Heritage Open Days weekend provides a great opportunity to learn more about Coventry’s history and heritage, and there will be many historical societies and associations on hand at key venues throughout the weekend to enhance your Heritage Open Days experience. These groups largely consist of volunteers, dedicating their time and effort to educating the wider community, celebrating our heritage, and campaigning to preserve our history.
