Dear Woodturner,

Welcome to UKIWS 2016! It’s hard to believe that it was only on 23rd October 2015 that Mike and Martin announced that UKIWS would take place this weekend.

What started off to be Mike’s idea for a pie and a pint with a few turners in a pub somewhere, UKIWS has taken off beyond anything he (or anyone, for that matter!) could have dreamed of.

Since then, the support gained from literally all over the world has been humbling and astonishing. We are incredibly grateful to all the YouTubers for their plugs, as well as the Likes and Shares of the Facebook page and posts from other supporters. And, many thanks to the Coombe Abbey Woodturners for their Stewardship this weekend.

Whilst you are here, please visit our trade stands and sponsors to show them your support - without them, and you, UKIWS would not have turned out to be as big as it has. Our grateful thanks extend to each of our sponsors: Oliver’s Woodturning, Taylors Mirfield, DalmannUK and Hampshire Sheen.

Whether you are here for one day or the entire weekend, we are sure you will meet new turners and put faces and voices to those you chat with on Facebook and other social media.

We hope you enjoy the event and leave having made new friends and perhaps even with some new tools, kits or wood for your workshop!

Your Pro Demonstrators

Gregory Moreton RPTGregory has been turning since 1991 and a member of the Register for Professional Turners since 1996. He is based in Surrey and has exhibited his unusual work at respected galleries and craft fairs.

Gregory has chosen to demonstrate how to create an oyster bowl and pearl for his Master Class

demonstration and for his public demonstration, Gregory has chosen again to do something out of the ordinary by showing how to make natural edge tube forms.

Saturday Master Class at 12:30; Sunday Public Demonstration at 2:30pm.

John Aitken RPTJohn is known to many as ‘The Bowler Hatted Turner’ for the characteristic hat he wears when demonstrating and it is a pleasure to welcome him to the UKIWS fold.

John’s Master Class demonstration will combine wood and pewter with a special video presentation of the pouring process and for his public demonstration, John will turn a finial pot and explain the use of the tools and how he turns thin finials.

Saturday Master Class at 10:00am; Sunday Public Demonstration at 1:00pm

Philip Greenwood RPTKnown to turners around the world as a writer for Woodturning Magazine, Philip Greenwood has been turning at the centre of his life since since 1986 and works out of his studio in Hutton-le-Hole, Yorkshire.

In his Master Class at 10am on Sunday 19th June, Philip will demonstrate how to turn incredibly thin walls on bowls or even

lampshades and in his public demonstration, Philip will turn a natural edge bowl.

Saturday Public Demonstration at 10:00am; Sunday Master Class at 12:30pm

Matt Jones:Originally from Wales and studying at the Chelsea College of Art, Matt Jones now lives and works in Ireland. After moving there in 2005 and renivating an outbuilding into the family home, he started woodturning full time in 2009.

Matt’s Master Class of a crush-grind pepper mill is aimed at turners of all abilities interested in creating a contemporary and professional quality product and his public demonstration will be a baby rattle with

walls down to just three millimetres with natural carnauba wax.

Saturday Master Class at 3:00pm; Sunday Public Demonstration at 10:00am

Ron Caddy:Ron will be using Polyester Resin blanks with Taylors Mirfield Omega kits in his demonstratoin at the Taylors Mirfield Stand. In addition to the tools that he uses, he will also discuss the use off Mandrels & Bushes, which will compliment Walters ‘between centres’ method on Sunday 19th.

Ron was introduced to woodturning as a Christmas present of a weekend of lessons in Somerset more than 25 years ago. For the past 15 years he has worked from a unit at the Fairground Craft Centre, for the last 3 years working 4 days a week.

Demonstrating Pen Turning with Polyester Blanks: Saturday at 10:30am.

Walter Hall:Walter, who will be demonstrating with Tailors Mirfield Zeta and/or Delta kits and mostly using wood blanks. He will be explaining the importance of proper blank preparation, demonstrating techniques including turning

between centres and giving tips on best practice in the use of tools to avoid catches and blowouts.

Walter lives in Amble on the Northumberland coast and took up wood turning as a hobby over 20 years ago. Now retired from the NHS, he makes high quality pens and other writing instruments from wood and acrylic materials.

Demonstrating Pen Turning Between Centres: Sunday at 1:30am.

Mike Waldt:Mike started turning just over four years ago, after watching a random videos on YouTube. And that was it! His passion had begun.Since then he has spent many hours practicing at the lathe, trying to improve on his technique.

This will be Mike’s first public Demonstration, but sink or swim, he says “I shall enjoy myself, and at the end of the day - that is what it is all about.”

Demonstrating Off Centre Goblets: Sunday at 11:30am.

Steve Twydell:Steve Twydell has only been turning since August 2014 after being introduced to it through social media and his best friend in Canada. He started out with a homemade lathe made from an old drill and rapidly progressed to a beginner’s lathe and then on to his now professional lathe.

Steve’s demo will show a new take on an old design, using eyelets and laces instead of a zip that has often been used by turners in the past.

Demonstrating ‘Laced Forms’: Saturday at 11:30am.

Joe Creed-Kaile:Joe Creed-Kaile is an up and coming young turner with a bright future ahead of him, and we are delighted to be hosting him for his first public demonstration on Saturday 18th June.

Introduced to turning by his Grandfather, a couple of years ago and in August 2014, Joe attended his first Youth Training weekend organised by the A.W.G.B. and he was hooked.

Joe’s demonstration will cover hollowing techniques using a spindle gouge rather than the modern hollowing arms. He will be produce a square hollow form with even openings on each face using either cherry or sycamore wood.

Demonstrating ‘Square Hollow Form’: Saturday at 1:00pm.

Your Amateur Demonstrators

Martin Saban-Smith:From Hampshire, Martin discovered woodturning as recently as May 2014 and since then has not looked back.

Martin is perhaps best known on YouTube for colouring and texturing techniques with the use of an airbrush or paper towel. This weekend, he will be demonstrating a mixture of techniques in his presentations. Demonstrating Saturday at 11:30; Sunday at 10:00am.

Yuval Lahav:Yuval lives just outside of Rome, Italy and only managed to confirm that he could make it to UKIWS very recently, and we are delighted that he said he would demonstrate for us.

Recently on YouTube, he has turned a Djembe drum in a short series, a superb hollow form torus and has de-lighted his viewers and Facebook followers with emerg-ing forms like the one shown here. And it is one of these stunning emerging forms that Yuval will turn in his demonstration at 2.30pm on Saturday 18th June.

Woodturning Symposium

2017

Would You Like to See a UKIWS Event in 2017?Would you like to help?

After the doors close on UKIWS on Sunday evening, we’ll begin to think about UKIWS for 2017...but we can’t do that without your feedback about this year’s event.

In a week or so’s time, we’ll post a questionnaire on the website and Facebook asking for your feedback. We can use this to improve how we organise the next UKIWS.

We’ll also be looking for a few more dynamic and ‘passionate about turning’ people to join our volunteer organisers who can bring brilliant value to the committee as we look towards the future. Could it be you?

UKIWS: What Happens Next?

Woodturning, the same as any hobby, pass-time or trade would become nothing when the current

community of woodturners move on. So at UKIWS, we’d like to help to promote woodturning to ‘new blood’.

With any profits remaining after the event and we have a small budget to get the next UKIWS off the ground, in a scheme yet to be finalised, we will invest it back into worthwhile causes that pro-actively support and promote woodturning to a wider community of all ages and abilities.

Initial thoughts we are considering include a grant type scheme for turners and/or clubs to take turning out into their own communities and social groups or even perhaps joining forces with an existing worthwhile scheme which shares a common and achievable goal.

Whether we can run in conjunction with existing schemes or whether we will devise our own, we don’t know yet, and there is a long way to go, with a lot of talking, hopefully! but there will be something in place that will further bolster the woodturning communities of the UK and Ireland.

If you have any ideas or would like to be involved, please contact us. We’d love to hear your thoughts.
