*Books

Me on the Map By Joan SweeneyThis shows a little girl who draws a map of her room, then of her house, then sees her house on the map of the city, and then sees the city on the map of the state all the way up to the map of the world, and then ends with going back to a map of her room. This really shows a great idea of what aerial maps look like.

Henry’s MapBy David Elliot This is a book about a pig that gets sick of the mess that overtakes the barnyard so he has to draw a map of the farm to show where all of the animals are suppose to be kept. This also shows the idea of drawing maps from aerial perspective.

*Books Continued

People and PlacesThis is a textbook that has a section that discusses aerial perspective, and distinguishing between landmass and water, which is the second GLCE I will be deciding. There is also a teacher addition, which has activities and lesson ideas to go with it.

Maps of My SchoolBy Matthew FrankThis is a big book from the CML, which is a great book for this GLCE! It shows different ways to map from different parts of the school fromaerial perspective. It also is a great intro to mapping and understanding maps.

*Magazine/Activity Book

The Mailbox- April/May 2001Pg 34-36This is the kindergarten edition, but I thought pages 34-36 would work well for this GLCE because it is all ways to incorporate well-known literature to mapping.

Mega-Fun Map SkillsThis is an activity booklet for map skills. I was looking at pages 27-30 which has loads of different activities about map-making to help students in preparation for this GLCE. This GLCE is actually an activity in this book.

An example that can lead into studentslooking at aerial perspective maps. Agood way is to make it personal for them, so maybe I could find one of their school, or their town. Else coming up withquestions that have them engaged with amap.

The Northern Michigan Learning Consortium1st Grade Common Core SS Resourceshttps://nmlcss.wikispaces.com/1st+Grade+Common+Core+SS+Resources

This is a website that has all types of worksheetsfor all subjects, but specifically for Social Studies,and in particular for this GLCE there are worksheetsfor maps and there is a blank world map that students could color in for this GLCE. There is a membership fee to use this site but there are still a lot of free worksheets on the site.

This website has resources for almost all the GLCE’s including all of mine except for 1-G1.0.1

*Poster

*Poster of the World map to show to students to introduce this GLCE.

This would be a great map that you could hangon the white board at the beginning of the unit to show students the difference between the land and water, and it is nice to see it on the flattened surface, rather than a globe.

*Poem- “A Map and a Dream”

*Maps are more/ than tiny lines

* Intersection/ lace designs...

*More than names/ and colored dots,

* rivers, mountains,/ tourist spots.

*Map are keys/ to secret places

*vast new world/ and unknown faces.

* I can trace each/ graceful line...

*Close my eyes/ and in my mind

* I can travel/ anywhere...

*A map, a dream/ can take me there!

*Game

*Globe Toss Game

I have personally done this game and had a blast with it. What happens is students can either sit at their seats or stand in a circle, and they toss the blow up globe to a classmate, and when the student catches the globe they look at their right hand pointer finger, and they have to say whether it is on land or water. This is a great tool to check for understanding, and see if the students are distinguishing between landmasses and bodies of water.

*Maps

*Google Earth Students can use Google Earth to point out the areas that are landmass and areas that are water and why they can tell which is which in an interactive way on Google maps.
