The first part of the course introduces the modern historical context in which the need for sociological thinking appears. The focus is on the issues of the

civil society and the nation-state, the secularisation of the western societies and the new dimensions of the moral and legal order. The interrelations

between politics and the modern forms of authority, power and domination and the key role of the modern market and its implications upon the concepts

of freedom and alienation are explained.

The second part of the course makes a general overview of the agencies of the socialisation (state, school, family, media) in the processes of constitution

of the modern identities. The social institutions and forms of social control, the modern types of social stratification, as well as the new conceptualisation

of the social inequalities in terms of “intersectionalities”. The types of symbolic power and non-economic capitals, the formal and hidden curriculum of

schooling. The social history and transformation of marriage and family and the introduction of the new concept of “intimate citizenship”.

The third part of the course includes a short introduction to the globalisation and “glocalisation” processes, the conflicts and convergences of the old and

the new media, the new social networks and movements in the late Modernity and the way these phenomena transform the societies and social relations at

the beginning of the 21th century.

The course aims to present the specific character of the sociological imagination in its affords to describe and understand the nature of the social reality

we live in. In order to grasp the complexity of the social problems of the modern societies the course briefly introduces some of the widely used

The old, as well as the new institutionalism developed because of the incapability of neo-classical economic theory (today’s mainstream) to offer

convincing explanation to a number of real economic phenomena and processes. Although the basic assumptions of neo-classical theory form the starting

analytical point in new institutional research, the new institutional economics modifies key assumptions to a great degree – prevalent incomplete

competition, incomplete information and bounded rationality, as well as positive transaction costs. Being still within the methodological individualism

paradigm, it can explain a substantial number of social processes, traditionally lying outside of the scope of conventional economic theory. The course

helps students to realize the potential in this area of research area, to develop critical thinking of the postulates in neo-classical economics and to draw

possible directions for an interdisciplinary development of economic science.

will be studied further elsewhere. The approach of the lecturers is centered around the idea of giving the students some basic knowledge of the facts and

an explanatory framework for understanding the evolution of European states, societies, diplomacy and culture in a period ranging from the 16th-17th to

the 21st century. Those decades and centuries were the periods when Europe came to the forefront of the progress of human civilization setting up the

general trend of globalization under its leadership. Building up world colonial empires the major European states gradually declined in their global role

and importance but still Europe is a major player at the world stage that everybody has to reckon with.

National economies are linked in a complex set of economic, political, social relationships. The course International Economics builds on the knowledge

acquired in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.

The course consists of two parts and starts with the introduction of the Balance of Payments.

The first part of the course deals with the issues related to the so-called four freedoms - the movement of goods, services, labor and capital. Attention is

drawn to the trade policy systems and the means of conducting them. International trade agreements, compensation deals, customs policy, non-tariff

barriers and international trade organizations such as the WTO are being analyzed. The international labor migration and foreign direct investments are

presented as an increasingly important element of the economic policy system.

The second part presents the international financial organizations, the nature, regulation and forecasting of the exchange rate, the types of foreign

exchange rates, the various foreign exchange operations and the related currency risks. The problems of economic integration and the Euro currency

system are also highlighted.

The discipline International Relations Theory is a fundamental subject for IR and other Plolitical Science students, on which other theoretical disciplines

build on. Its objective is to acquaint and educate about the gnoseological approaches to international relations, to stimulate the formation of individual

developing systemic knowledge matrix of the students in the field of international relations. The students acquire knowledge about the system,

morphology, structure, functioning, development and the driving factors of international relations. The students get to know the contents and the

peculiarities of the regulative sub-system of the international relations system, including the legal-regulative and the violent, including military, aspects of

the governance of the international system. A special accent is devoted to the theory of integration in international relations, theory of international

conflict and to security studies. The subject forms the basis for a strategic leadership thinking of the students.

The course attempts to set standards for the teaching and learning of Bulgarian as a foreign language in accordance with the standards established for

the teaching of other modern languages, especially those elaborated and promoted by the Council of Europe.

The course includes texts and exercises for level B2 according to CEFR.

Final students’ results should be:

Listening- can understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar.

Reading- can read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems.

Writing- can write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects.

Speaking- can express himself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Final exams are written and oral. The test results and the students' examination papers are kept at the administration office.

This course combines general introduction into the political and social development of the Balkan countries with particular focus on their interrelation

with the major European societies. Special attention is paid to the EU-related integration processes in the region after 1960s.

The course deals with the defining notions on the Balkans and with the development of the region in modern times in interconnection with (Western)

European influences on it. The themes include: the Ottoman - European relations and the Eastern Question; Europe and the creation of the modern Greek

state; the emergence of Modern Serbia; European powers and the unification of Romania; Balkans during the First World War; different Balkan countries

after the Second World and their relation to EU; Yugoslav and post-Yugoslav Macedonia; etc. The course aims to enable the students to understand the

basic aspects of the historical development of the Balkans and to approach their development within the larger European context.

Europe, representing major sectors of the functional regional integration. Europe and the EU have passed a long and hard way before giving the

supranational entity parts of their national sovereignty. The problems stem from the complexities of the integration process in the area of foreign plolicy,

security and defense, from the different impacts of the “spill-over” effect from the other integration sectors. Problems stem also from the difficult

evolution of the institutions of the EUFSDP.

There are issues in the ESDP/NATO relationship. The US-EU relations are also in development and this is reflected on the further evolution of the ESDP.

The new East European allies of the USA have their own opinion of the ESDP/NATO relationship.

There are additional issues in the relations with Russia – a strong geopolitical and energy security factor in the global system. China and India also

influence the processes of EU integration, including in the area of foreign, security and defense policy.

The neighboring regions of the EU – mostly the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Caucasian-Caspian Sea as well as countries like

Ukraine and Belarus are of long-term interest for the security and defense of the Union.

The new security threats for the world and Europe significantly influence the evolution of the Union’s foreign, security and defense policy. The new

security threats require operationalization of the ESDP.

This course allows the students to get to know better the institutions of ESDP, the official documents of the ESDP, useful bibliography and websites.

The course is elective and is integrated into "History of Europe", "Theory of International Relations" and "EU Discipline" programmes. The organisation

of the course is in lectures and seminar discussions; students will study selected sources and will be mentored by a high-level practitioner to discuss

NATO related problemaique in different contexts: historical, political, strategic, and organisational.

The students will acquire interdisciplinary knowledge of conditions, driving forces and motives, and processes that led to the creation, development,

recent on-going transformation of NATO. The course starts with discussions on the end of the WWII political, ideological, and startegic landscape,

focusing on the specific national interests and demands that drove the relationships between the USA, Europe and Soviet Union and motivated the

establishment of NATO.

Since the birth of NATO, the course examines five distinct periods within which NATO’s strategic thinking, role, and mission has evolved: the Cold War

period; the immediate post-Cold War period; the security environment after 9/11, and current assertiveness of Russia in the European security affairs and

wider.

From 1949 to 1991, NATO’s strategy has been principally characterised by defence and deterrence, with growing attention to dialogue and détente for the

last two decades of this period. From 1991 a broader approach was adopted where the notions of cooperation and security complemented the basic

role and mission change, operations, pertnerships, and organisational adaptation. They will be be discussed in both contexts the global strategic balance

and the European security. Special attention is paid to the interaction and specificities of NATO's co-operation with the EU.

This course is devoted to the presentation of the fundamental concepts in the theory of state and law. It aims at explaining both the classical theoretical

achievements and their actual topical dimension, problematizing the effects of globalization and postmodernity on the state, the law and the society. The

course starts with analysis of the authority, legitimacy and legality. The emergence and the development of the modern state and law will be presented in

historical, philosophical and sociological context. The main theories on the origin, essence and functions of state and law are going to be outlined.

Furthermore central concepts of modern and postmodern constitutionalism as well as of the emerging supranational and European constitutionalism are

going to be explained. The course will combine analytical with comparative, historical and critical legal methods. It will try to demonstrate the current

status and achievements of the theory of state and law. For example, the traditional concept of sovereignty will be presented both with regard to its

classical theoretical and historical aspects and in the light of the sovereignty and constitutional identity debate in the EU. The last part of the course is

devoted to the structure of the legal system, the sources of law, the distinction between the legal norms and legal principles and the legal argumentation.

This course is devoted to the presentation of the fundamental concepts of the International Public Law. It aims at presenting the role which the

International Public law plays in the process of regulation of the international relations. The course will focus on the historical process of evolvement of

the international public law, its subjects and sources. It will also pay special attention to some untypical subjects of the International public law such as

the individuals, in relation to their criminal responsibility at international level and the protection of their human rights.

In addition, the course will provide in depth information on the Law of international treaties, the Diplomatic law, the Law of the sea and the Law of the

international organisations. It will combine analytical with comparative, historical and critical legal methods. Special attention shall be paid to the UN

and its specialised agencies.

The students will be introduced to the concepts and main principles of the international protection of human rights and the international humanitarian

This hands-on practical work course focuses on active writing of a broad variety of media texts which show the extent to which students are familiar

Democratic Oversight of

The concept that the military can and must be controlled democratically is a precondition of the very understanding of democracy. This concept is

connected, but also different of the civilian oversight. Though civilian authorities can stop the military to use coercive force against a totalitarian

regime, this does not mean yet the control is democratic – despite its clear civilian nature. Civilian oversight in the conditions of democracy touch the

very principles and mechanisms, through which political power over the armed forces is maintained. The principles and mechanisms are the same as

observed in all spheres of political life and the respective decision-making processes.

Democracy is more than elections through the contest of many parties and candidates. Though they are the starting point of democracy its essence is

something different. In the sense of values the key to democracy is the presumption the majority can be wrong. This requires the recognition it could

become minority and after accepting such a change is possible, this requires the majority to be limited and responsible in its activity. In the sense of

mechanisms – out of the possibility for change in open elections, the representatives of the majority in the government (executive and legislative power)

not only accept the need of self-limiting themselves, but acknowledge the need of mechanisms for limiting the execution of power for the sake of

preventing abuse of power.This mixture of values for self-limiting and the respective mechanisms define the contents of democracy.

Democracy, with its contemporary characteristics, inherited some of its features from the Ancient and Medieval worlds, but developed in Modern times

(17th-20th centuries) first in the countries of the Atlantic region – England/Great Britain, the USA, and France. The Atlantic Democracy (also called

Western, Liberal, and Constitutional Democracy) became one of the dominant ideas of our time and the most widely spread form of government. The

course explores the idea and practice of democracy from the ancient Greeks to the 20th century, paying attention mostly to how and what types of

democracies were established by the English, American and French revolutions (17th-18th centuries), and to how these different democracies developed

and began to spread in Europe and the world. These questions are examined comparatively, in their historical development, and making connections

with present-day experiences. During the course, a large number of documents (primary sources and authors’ opinions) are presented, analyzed, and

discussed. Students are engaged in the debates that surround the idea and practice of democracy and asked to develop and communicate (both orally and

in writing) persuasive arguments.
