The lengthening of life span brought out in the last years pathologies of the elderly significantly affecting the quality of life. For this reason, in the enT field, there is the need to take into consideration pathologies involving several districts and to try to identify a correct treatment. The course is addressed to enT specialists, audiometrists and speech therapists since not only the major pathologies of geriatric relevance will be elucidated, but diagnostic and rehabilitative techniques will be also presented. a practical session is also planned where the main rehabilitative techniques of some pathologies will be illustrated.

Inflammatory pathology of maxillary sinus represents a problem causing considerable uncertainty in some protocols of odontological treatments, particularly those involving osseointegrated implants. Some sinusal pathologies are at the same time a result and a limit to odontology planning.a number of specialists particularly involved in the study of this borderline pathology have been gathered in order to evaluate together the most critical situations for the otorhinolaryngological approach to therapy and the odontological one to the right planning of implantology in major inflammations of the maxillary sinus.at the end of the programme a consensus conference will be held aimed at sharing guidelines for a series of pathological events still widely debated.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHl) strongly affects the quality of life of patients since its symptoms are perceived as highly threatening. SSHl represents an important topic for its clinical features and possible sequelae including severe hearing loss, vertigo and tinnitus. evaluation of treatment efficacy is not easy since the natural history of the disease is unforeseeable and variable; furthermore several elements seem to affect natural history and prognosis of the disease. Therefore the analysis of results must take into account these multiple factors and is probably biased by assembling in an only clinical picture, SSHl, different probable clinical entities. The course, organized by the enT department of reggio emilia Hospital and the enT Clinic of Modena and reggio emilia University Hospital, is addressed to enT and audiology/Phoniatrics specialists and residents as well as to audiometrists and speech therapists and aims to provide an updating of present therapies of SSHl introducing some innovative proposals based on the use of selective plasmapheresis. Wide space will be reserved to simulated clinical cases for exercises in the diagnostic-therapeutic and prosthetic approach.

Voice disorders are defined as voice problems caused by abnormality or loss of the normal function of phonatory apparatus. They derive from a wide range of pathological conditions having an effect ranging from a mild alteration of voice quality up to a complete loss of the ability to produce laryngeal voice.aim of this course, with a view to multidisciplinarity, is mainly to gather experienced teachers from the clinical and not clinical field (enT, Phoniatrics, Occupational Medicine, acoustic engeneering, Physics, etc.) so as to provide an updating from the clinical-rehabilitative point of view of these professional pathologies. The course, organized by the enT Clinic of Turin University and Turin Polytechnic, is addressed to enT, Phoniatrics/audiology, Occupational Medicine specialists and residents, engineers, physics and audioprosthesists.

The course aims at informing about peculiarities of prosthetic treatment in children, describing also characteristics of auditory perception in the normoacusic child, comparing it with those of the adult and underlining their role in cognitive and learning maturation processes. In the two days of the course three didactic modules will be developed. In the first the particular characteristics of hearing in children and their role in the learning processes will be described, and also the auditory scenarios in which they act. The second module will develop the basic principles of paediatric audiology, describing available technology, when to use it, how to control its efficacy and how to improve its performance with rehabilitation. The course will be completed by the third module where teachers will deal with specific topical subjects so as to provide practical hints for the management of difficult cases. Conductive, sensorineural and central hearing impairment will be considered from a practical point of view explaining the role and the application of the most advanced technological options.

nasal fossae and its cavities are structures whose malformative and inflammatory pathologies affect the physiological balance of upper airway tract and other apparatus such as the auditory and respiratory ones, causing smell, taste and visual disturbances as well as headache. The central position in the face and its anatomic characteristics allow the use of endoscopic systems to deal with its several pathologies and those of close anatomic parts such as cranial fossae, skullbase and the orbit.Sophisticated investigational and surgical techniques have been developed as well as equipments and highly precise and effective instruments undergoing constant evolution. The conference will provide all those wishing to follow the evolution of this branch of otorhinolaringology with an updating in the field of immunology, instrumental diagnostics, surgical techniques, imaging, computerized systems and robotic surgery.

The environmental acoustic wellbeing is a mandatory requirement among those that more contribute to affect the quality of life. This wellbeing does not concern only the pleasantness of social life and the normal development of brain work, but has an impact also on health. Hearing, phonation, communication, psycho-physical balance are some of the dimensions that are more affected by environmental acoustics. luckily the interest for problems related to the impact of acoustics in social life environments is increasing; new standards, mainly in the field of building industry (materials and planning), have been set and other are under way; new knowledge is available in the field of noise-related discommunications and audiological and phoniatric pathologies due to acoustic stress; innovative devices for audiological rehabilitation of an increasing number of hearing impaired people are being developed taking into account the impact of environmental noise; new architectural and engineering strategies, in keeping with the new standards, are being developed; on the whole a new cultural attitude and a renewed interest is being given to all disciplines involved. The workshop aims at presenting the state of the art and some perspectives in this complex multi- and inter-disciplinary field, focussing on the individual and communication.

The conference will focus on the impact of age on hearing and hearing impairment. In view of the fact that western societies are dramatically ageing, emphasis will be laid on age-related changes in the human sensory system, and especially hearing. But there are also old and new challenges to hearing rehabilitation in young people which shall receive attention. additionally, a light will be thrown on new measures of hearing protection: measures which could contribute in a near future to lowering the prevalence of hearing impairment. The format of the conference will consist of invited lectures gathered into four different sessions with ample room for open discussion and a final round table with all the speakers. With a renowned faculty, and a selected group of scientists and clinicians from all over the world, the conference will be a unique opportunity to share and acquire knowledge on a very imminent challenge to our society: the impact of ageing.

This theoretical-practical course is addressed to audiology/Phonoatrics, enT and Paediatrics specialists and residents as well as to audiometrists, audioprosthesists and speech therapists.aim of the course is to compare the results of early diagnosis of hearing impairment through newborn auditory screening in several european countries. a further thorough examination will come from the comparison of methodologies and results of early rehabilitation and from the evaluation of communicative, interactive and cognitive performances in the child. The central auditory system has a limited period of plasticity and therefore the potentiality and efficiency of neural networks organization at the basis of the processes of language perception are activated and catalyzed by the child auditory experience in the first years of life. “For over 100 years all studies on hearing loss have concerned the ear; today research is focussed on the brain because we listen with the brain and the ear only acts to direct sound to the brain” (Carol Flexer, 2010). The approach to hearing loss correction which is presently being developed is a “top-down” one or of “cognitive neuroscience”. Studies on cerebral plasticity and early correction of auditory impairment with prosthesis or cochlear implant have clearly shown how important is time and modality with which the acoustic information arrives to cortical auditory areas. The question to be asked is which acoustic information is necessary to the brain as input to an optimal “working”. Most models of CI strategies, based on cochlear functioning in the normoacousic, try to mimic the normal pattern of activity of the auditory nerve without considering development and plasticity of auditory pathways. This course aims to report the most recent data on the consequencies of hearing impairment, also of medium degree, on the development of central auditory pathways and language, on development modalities of cerebral plasticity and to analyze the present intervention strategies. The course is addressed to audiology/Phonatrics, enT and Paediatrics specialists and residents, as well as to audiometrists, audioprothesists and speech therapists.
