Experimental Courses: Fall 2018

ANTH 400: Urban Europe. In the processes of globalization which connect our world, cities are the nodes through which most global networks pass. In Europe, the intensification of globalization over the past decades has brought new peoples, spatial transformations, political practices, and cultural adaptations to cities across the continent. Recent decades in Europe have seen the fall of the Iron Curtain, the rise of the Euro currency, and the growth of the European Union as a cultural, political, and economic power, along with waves of migration from post-colonies, and reactionary ethnic nationalisms. This course seeks to provide students a comparative perspective on Europe’s on-going transformations by engaging its cities as sites on which these global and regional forces converge. ART 340: Ceramic Sculpture. Ceramic Sculpture is a course designed to address the specific techniques, challenges, and opportunities afforded by ceramic sculpture. Assignments are designed to explore both historical and contemporary approaches, including figurative, narrative, and slip casting. Some of the projects are group projects done in collaboration with other students and the professor. Students will also learn how to formulate low-fire glazes as they explore multiple ways to unify surface and form. Previous experience with clay or sculpture helpful but not required. B EC 320. Faith and Market Mentorship. Students will meet with prominent Christian practitioners from across the business and political world to hear about how their faith has impacted their decisions and practices within the marketplace. Some classes will include dinner at the Harbor House to foster open discussion with guest speakers. Course will include classroom discussion, papers on readings, and a final project that links students to a mentoring opportunity. Application required. B EC 380. Community Economic Development & Enterprise. This course teaches concepts and frameworks of community economic development with special focus on the role of private enterprise and its relationship to other key actors, such as non-profit institutions and government agencies. Students will study ways in which community development practices, entrepreneurship, and business development can be leveraged to promote economic opportunity in urban neighborhoods. Taught in Wheaton in Chicago only. BITH 330. Early Christianity Integration Seminar. A study of early Christianity as it relates to contemporary issues. Students will first survey key themes in early Christian studies and then investigate one topic in depth through a major paper that integrates early Christianity with a non-Biblical and Theological Studies course or experience. COMM 250. Fake News and Public Rhetoric. In an age of spin, hype, and image, we lack resources to discern trust and truth in our public information. Through classic and contemporary readings in rhetoric and argumentation, students will develop guidelines for identifying fake information and promoting trustworthy advocacy. COMM 340. Crisis and Reputation Management. As communication technology and the proliferation of news outlets instantly informs the public about organizational missteps, organizations need to be aware of their reputation before, during, and after crises. This course is intended to provide you with an understanding of the framework and tools necessary to successfully address communication and reputation management tasks in a variety of crisis situations. Through discussion and application, as well as analysis of case studies, students will be asked to think strategically, make recommendations to address crisis-related challenges, and develop robust, proactive plans to assist organizations in this arena. In short, you’ll gain the expertise and confidence needed to maneuver though potentially problematic situations today’s organizations and individuals will encounter. CSCI 200. Programming for Business. A gentle introduction to computer programming for students unlikely to participate further in the computer science curriculum. Not open to students who have passed CSCI 235 or the equivalent. CSCI 210. Computer Programming Principles. A general, gentle introduction to problem solving to prepare students for computer programming. Not open to students who have passed CSCI 235 or the equivalent. MUIP 160/260. Early Keyboard Lessons. Private lessons in a variety of historic keyboard instruments. MUMS 430. Advanced Topics in Conducting. The course focuses in depth upon topics central to the leadership of choral and choral/orchestral music, to include detailed planning, preparation, rehearsal, and performance. May be repeated for credit. Pre-req: Mums 248 AND Mums 311 or Mums 312. PHYS 370. Computational Methods in Python. Advanced computer modeling of physical systems using Python. Pre-requisite: Phys 334 (Computer Modeling using MATLAB). Topics include: downloading and using Python packages/libraries such as scrpy; Python

fundamentals (syntax, logic selection, structures, for/while loops, strings, lists; debugging; writing functions; plotting, program input/output; data modeling; and image processing. SCI 200. Introduction to the Health Professions. This course is designed to help students gain a deeper understanding of the variety of professions impacting the healthcare environment today. Emphasis is placed upon the skills and attributes needed to effectively prepare for entry into the professions. Students will explore health care history, health disparities, healthcare delivery, and culture as it relates to healthcare practice, inter-professional collaboration, and professionalism. Not for students who have taken SCI 229/229L. SOC 460. Violence in Minority Communities. Night after night in most urban areas, local news media reveal stories of horrific violence in urban areas. Some of these events are related to gang activities, drug trafficking, turf wars, guns, and random shootings. Costs (human and financial) are staggering for authorities in law enforcement, the criminal justice system, and the nation. Why do these social conditions exist or persist? What can be done about them from a Christian perspective? Where are churches relevant? These issues and questions will be addressed in this course from a variety of domains intersecting the sociological perspective and public health. SOC 480. Violence against Women. All over the world, violence is used to control or harm women and girls. In Criminology, issues related to domestic abuse, rape, sex trafficking, abduction, and sexual homicide are core to the social problems engulfing societies. In Sociology, violence against women involves the corruption and distortion of gender roles via socialization, discrimination, and power. This course analyzes the most rigorous research plus best practices in in sociology and criminology (as well as related fields) in order to prevent violence against women in church and society. Also, self-defense tactics will be explored with experts in law enforcement and associated professions. Our immediate or urgent aim is to expose the silent treachery and inconspicuous damage that violence against women produces in persons, churches, and nations. (2 cr.) URBN 380.
