COURSEDESCRIPTION
ThiscourseisastudyofChristianworshipfromitsbiblicalroots,throughitsdevelopmentandexpressionthroughchurchhistory,tocontemporarystylesandpractices.Emphasiswillalsobegiventoprinciplesofplanning,leadingandevaluatingworship.
STUDENTLEARNINGOUTCOMES
ThecourseisdesignedtopreparestudentstoserveandleadGod’speopleinworshiptothegloryofGod,totheedificationofthechurch,andtothespreadofthegospelinworld.
Tothatendeachstudentwillbecomefamiliarwith:

3) Theplanningandimplementationofworship4) Thestrengthsandweaknessesofcontemporarystylesofworship

6) Evaluatingandchoosingmusicforworship7) Nurturingandtrainingmusiciansinthechurch

b)WORSHIPSERVICEPROJECTS(10%each:totalof20%)—Eachstudentwilldesignandprepareanorderofworshipforatwo(2)worshipservices.Botharetwopartassignments:
ForPartOnethestudentwillprinttheorderofworshipjustasitwouldappearinaservicefolderorbulletin.Include:songtitles,titlesandcomposersofchoralmusic(ifachoirisused),titlesandcomposersofinstrumentalmusicused,namesofserviceleaders(e.g.pastor,musicminister,accompanist,etc.),thesermontext(listasaScriptureReading),thesermontitle,instructionsforthecongregation(ifneeded),churchname,anddateoftheservice.
ForPartTwothestudentwillwritea2–3pageannotationoftheworshipserviceandexplaintherationalefortheorderofworship.
Thefirstworshipservicewillbeaserviceforanon-seasonalSundaybasedontheIsaiah6Model(dueNovember18th).Thesecondworshipservicewillbeaseasonalservice:PalmSunday,GoodFriday,EasterSunday,Thanksgiving,oranAdventService(dueDecember12th).
c)WORSHIPSERVICEOBSERVATION(10%)—EachstudentwillobserveoneworshipserviceofadenominationotherthanBaptist.Thestudentwillcompleteanobservationform(tobedistributedinclass).Thisformandacopyofthebulletin/orderofworshipisduebythelastdayofclass,May7,2018.NOTEBOOK—(10%ofcoursegrade)Eachstudentisexpectedtomaintainaneatandorderlynotebookcontainingthefollowing:

Thenotebookmustcontainanorganizedsystemoflocatingmaterials.Tabsandatableofcontentsarerequired.Notebookswillbecheckedperiodicallythroughoutthesemester.
CLASSROOMPARTICIPATION—(30%ofcoursegrade)Studentsareexpectedtocometoeachclasshavingreadtheassignedreadingsandpreparedtotakepartindiscussion.TextbooksandBibleshouldbebroughttoclass.Thecoursewillincludeatleast24hoursofclassroominstruction.
Thestudentisexpectedtospendaminimumof2hoursperweekcompletingworkoutsideofclassforevery1credithourofthisclass.Therequirements(i.e.,reading,writing,evangelism,etc.)ofthisclassareplannedaccordingtothisexpectation.
GRADING
A = 95-100B = 87-94C = 77-86D = 70-76F = 0-69(1) Thestudentisexpectedtospendnolessthan2hoursofout-of-classworkpercredithourinthisclass.(2) Thissyllabusismeanttoaccuratelyreflectallexpectationsandassignmentsforthiscourse.However,theprofessorreservestherighttoadjustthesyllabusathisdiscretion.(3) Cheatingorplagiarismofanykindwillresultinanimmediatefailinggradeontheassignmentwithnochanceforresubmission.Theprofessordoeshavetheoptioneithertoallowthestudenttoremaininandcompletethecourseortodismissthestudentfromthecoursecompletely.
