COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Laboratory Elementary School and Junior High School (LES-JHS) English Language Teaching is grounded on the
principle expressed in the Department of Education K to 12 Curriculum Guide stating that "Learner's learn about language and how to
use it effectively through their engagement with and study of text", which is realized through varied activities involving reading,
writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. It aims to produce learners with communicative competence who are proficient in both
written and oral communication. Specifically, learners manifest grammatical/linguistic competence, sociolinguistic competence,
discourse competence, and strategic competence.
English language teaching in the Laboratory Elementary School (LES) serves as the strong foundation of language learning
whereby learners' achieve mastery of basic skills in reading, writing, and speaking. More so, learning is aimed at the acquisition of
the following: a) knowledge of the alphabets, grammar, phonic and word recognition, vocabulary, spelling, and composition b) skills
in phonology, handwriting, writing, comprehension, and fluency.

English Language Teaching in the Junior High School (JHS) serves to reinforce the basic skills of learners and eventually
apply them in real-life context. Hence, the following are acquired by the learners: a) knowledge of Philippine, Asian, English, and

English 7 covers Philippine literature, various reading styles, ways of determining word meaning, the sounds of English and
the prosodic features of speech, correct subject-verb agreement, literal and figurative language, extracting and condensing information
based on library sources, verbal and non-verbal cues in oral communication, types of phrases, clauses, and sentences, strategies in
listening to and viewing of informative and short narrative texts; word relationships and associations; informative speech forms; and
use of direct/reported speech, passive/ active voice, simple past and past perfect tenses, sentence connectors, various extended text
