Now in its 46th year, this course reviews the most recent developments andcurrent controversies in the field of internal medicine. Particular emphasis willbe placed on topics of clinical relevance to the practicing physician. The coursewill include:Didactic Lectures – Clinically active faculty from the Department of Medicinewill emphasize recent clinical advances.Year-in-Review Literature Reviews – Faculty will review major articles fromthe general medical specialty literature with immediate importance to clinicalpractice.Clinical Dilemmas – In addition to case presentations to illustrate currentmanagement strategies, a special session on clinical problem-solving will beincluded.Questions and Answers – Ample time will be provided for specific questionsand discussions of problems commonly encountered by course participants.Internal Medicine Topics – Areas to be covered include cardiology, geriatrics,endocrinology, general internal medicine, women’s health, infectious diseases,gastroenterology, hematology and oncology, neurology, rheumatology, andpulmonary disease.Multidisciplinary Topics – Additional topics of interest to the practicinginternist will include issues in women’s health, geriatrics, emergency & hospitalmedicine, and neurology.Advances in Internal Medicine is presented by the Department of Medicine and is sponsored by the Office of Continuing Medical Education of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

TARGET AUDIENCEThis course is designed for practicing internists, family practitioners, and otherprimary care health professionals. It is also appropriate for hospitalists who wish tostay current on recent developments in internal medicine beyond the inpatient setting.
The purpose of this course is to increase competence and improve clinicianpractice in internal medicine. We specifically anticipate improvements in skills andstrategies to:• Better manage commonly encountered chronic medical problems such as
hyperlipidemia, diabetes, osteoporosis, obstructive lung disease, gout, andheadaches, as well as acute conditions such as skin and soft tissue infections,diarrhea, and musculoskeletal injuries;
• Bring practice patterns more in line with current evidence and guidelines withrespect to atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, chronic kidney disease,anticoagulation management, contraception, and preoperative medicalevaluation;
• Manage common problems traditionally treated by specialists, such as heartfailure, Hepatitis B & C infections, end-of-life care, rheumatoid arthritis, as wellas recognize the indications for referral to a subspecialist.
