ASSESSMENT Year 8 Information Assessment Booklet Assessment is a process of gathering information about your learning. The final mark you receive is an indication of the knowledge and skills you have shown during your studies. Assessment is standards referenced which means your achievements are measured against the specific standards in each course. Teachers use a wide variety of tasks to gather information on student achievement. Assessment Tasks include assignments, class tests, exams, presentations, practical work, long-term projects and performance. Information about the percentage of the total assessment (weighting) that must be given to particular components and the modes of assessment are found in each subject’s syllabus. Specific details of each Assessment Task, including the outcomes to be assessed, will be given to you in writing a reasonable time (usually two weeks) before the task is due. You will also be provided with marking criteria. Preparation for all aspects of an Assessment Task is the student’s responsibility. Boys returning to school after an absence should check with teachers to see whether an Assessment Task was handed out. As part of personal planning, students should keep the Assessment Booklet close to their home study area.

SUBMITTING ASSESSMENT TASKS Students are expected to hand in tasks by the specified due time to their respective teachers. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the tasks are handed in to the correct teacher. In exceptional circumstances, assessment tasks may be submitted to the KLA Coordinator. Under no circumstances are tasks to be left at the front reception office. If a student does not complete a task, parents will be informed by the KLA Coordinator by means of a letter. Where more than two letters have been sent home in any one subject (i.e. when a student has neglected to submit more than two tasks in a subject) a meeting will be arranged with parents, the subject teacher, KLA Coordinator and Year Coordinator.

EXTENSIONS Tasks should be handed in on time. Late tasks must be handed in immediately upon return to school. Where an extension of time is required, students should apply in writing to the class teacher in advance (at least three days) and provide valid reasons for the extension (e.g. illness, misadventure). The loss of electronic work for assessment through failure of computer systems or devices is not a valid excuse for extension or non-submission. Students must make backup copies of files which could be handed in by the due date, regularly print their working drafts and keep their drafts composed on paper to support the late final submission. This policy also applies to printing (ink and toner shortages) as facilities are available via the school library network to print hardcopy assessment. As with all assessment and homework dilemmas students should consult with the class teacher prior to or by the due date.

SICKNESS, EMERGENCY OR MISADVENTURE You will not be penalised for missing classroom tasks or handing in tasks late because of illness or misadventure (accidents or non-medical problems) on the day the task is due, if you provide valid written evidence to the class teacher. All notes of explanation of absence must be shown to the relevant class teacher. The valid written evidence for students in Years 7, 8 and 9 should be a signed letter of explanation from a parent or caregiver for any illness or misadventure that prevents you from completing a task. A medical certificate may be provided but only if convenient, it is not a requirement for students in Years 7, 8 and 9. Tasks will not be compensated for factors such as holiday trips which affect preparation for or performance on tasks. Students with unacceptable reasons for not completing a task will receive a zero mark. Please see your KLA coordinator regarding penalties if tasks are not submitted, or late. Students in Years 7-9 should provide a letter from parents outlining the issue(s) if they feel there is a valid reason for late or non-submission of tasks. If your reasons for missing a task are accepted, you may be given a substitute task. In some cases, it is neither suitable for the student nor appropriate to the nature of the task for a substitute task to be given. In these cases, an estimated mark will be awarded.

LATE SUBMISSION The following penalties apply for any late submission of tasks. Be aware that “day” means calendar day; for example, a piece of work due on a Friday and submitted on the following Monday is THREE days late.

1. Submission ONE day late: 20% of the mark scored will be deducted. 2. Submission TWO days late: 40% of the mark scored will be deducted. 3. Submission THREE days late: 60% of the mark scored will be deducted. 4. Submission FOUR days late: 80% of the mark scored will be deducted. 5. Submission FIVE or more days late: no mark will be recorded.

UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR If you are found to be cheating in a class test or formal examination, you will be awarded a zero mark and your parents will be notified. Plagiarism is also considered cheating and will result in a penalty of some or all marks depending on the extent of the plagiarism. Plagiarism is the presenting of the words and ideas of others as if they were your own. It includes copying sections from books, articles or websites without indicating a quotation and acknowledging the author. Paraphrasing (changing a passage into your own words) is also plagiarism when the author of the original works is not acknowledged. Taking or copying from other students and presenting it as your own are also plagiarism.

GENERAL INFORMATION The date of an Assessment Task can be changed if school circumstances make it advisable. In such cases you will be given reasonable notice, in writing, of the alteration. For each Assessment Task, you are given a mark and appropriate feedback for the task. Your mark for any task is confidential. It is not given to other students. Your Homeroom Teacher is the person you see every day. If you are having trouble adjusting to the assessment routine, they can help you plan a study timetable and provide advice on time management. Your Year Coordinator is the person to go to when the problem seems serious. Year Coordinators work on your behalf with KLA Coordinators and the Curriculum Coordinator. The Curriculum Coordinator is the person to go to with concerns involving assessment procedures.

MARCELLIN COLLEGE RANDWICK Referencing and Bibliographies Policy All educational institutions require a formalised standard of presentation and acknowledgement of sources of information used in completing an assignment. It is unethical to submit work as your own that has been copied from someone else’s material. This is called plagiarism.

All material should be placed in your own language and terms, remembering to state the source of your material in a bibliography. Marcellin College Randwick’s Policy from Year 7 through to Year 12 is that if a student has plagiarised, then an automatic zero will be given to the entire task. This may seem an extreme measure but is consistent in all educational institutions. As a guide of how to reference your work and make use of a Bibliography the following should be most useful: HOW TO REFERENCE The HARVARD system is a commonly used form of academic referencing. In the Harvard system, the name of the author(s), the date of publication of the text, and the page number are included directly after the quote. Quotation marks are used to enclose the exact words from a text. Example: “Dehydration results in a decrease in skilled performance, which can lead to injury as well as poor performance.” (Cross, Gibbs, Gray, 1991, p131) A BIBLIOGRAPHY When using the Harvard system, the resources used in your research are listed in a Bibliography at the end of your paper. The resources are listed in alphabetical order. The resources may include books, journal articles, videos, CD’s, and Internet sources. Examples: One Author Simpson, W.1987.
