LUNCH PAYMENTS
SUMMER TERM
Parents are reminded that Summer Term lunch payments
must be received by 22 May. The cost of lunches for this
half term is £70.00. Please also ensure that you are up to
date with all payments for lunch for the previous term. All
details can be found on WisePay. If you are having difficulty
making payments please contact Mrs Thunhurst in the Fi-
nance Office on 020 7924 8205 or by email at
Our amazing parents/ carers raised approximately £5,000 and our sponsors,
Rochford Stokes, kindly donated another £5,000 last Saturday. This makes
our incredible total to around £10,000! The Spring Fair was a terrific success
enjoyed by parents/carers, pupils, prospective parents and pupils, our local
community and staff. A special thank you to Patrizia Gnoato for leading the
team to achieve our biggest fair yet. Patrizia and the team have certainly
inspired our children and shown what can be achieved when we get involved
in our local community. A big thank you to everyone who contributed and
prepared for the event.

2ND ANNUAL
SPRING FAIR
By The Parent Council
Last weekend the second annual spring fair was held at the school and how lucky we were again with the
weather!
Many of the same stalls were run as last year - the ever popular penalty shootout, the Grand National, karaoke,
bouncy castle, face painting, tattoos and homemade crafts to name but a few. We also had some new activities
this year including uni cycling for the brave.
The food options were amazing this year as people were spoilt for choice - hotdogs, Spanish food, pizzas, Ethiopi-
an food, crepes, Indian food, cakes and our own local Oddono's ice cream. We were also able to show off the
gardens where we served tea, coffee and cakes to the many visitors to the school. The bar also seemed to be a
popular location for many people!
Our Spring fair was very generously sponsored by estate agents Rochford Stokes who also helped run the adult
tombola stall with great enthusiasm.
Congratulations to the many winners in the raffle. There were so many generous donations by local businesses
that lots of people were able to win some great prizes.
The energy and time needed to put on an event of this size is huge and it would not be possible without the en-
thusiasm and drive of so many people. Many thanks to all the parents, carers, staff and pupils who were involved
in any way with the fair. And also many thanks to the hundreds of people who came along to support the fair. It
was lovely to welcome so many pupils and parents as well as members of our community to our school. It was a
great atmosphere and really showed off Bolingbroke Academy at its best.
The great thing about this type of event is that it also raises money, we don’t have the final number yet but we
think we have made nearly £10k! Please do not forget to send us any feedback on the fair to

YEAR 9 TRIP TO THE DESIGN MUSEAUM
By Ms Houghton
It was fantastic to start the summer term by taking some of our creative and talented year 9 pupils to The Design
Museum. We all enjoyed a picnic lunch outside the Mayor’s Office and a scenic walk along the South Bank. Once
we arrived at the museum, the pupils had the opportunity to explore the “Woman, Fashion, Power” exhibition,
innovative health care designs and modern products which improve everyday lives. After they looked around, the
pupils then selected their favourite products which affected an interactive list that the museum was keeping a tally
of. We ended a perfect, sunny day by enjoying ice creams on the way back to school.
“It was really nice to see all the things we do and make in Art and Design
and Technology as the things they would be in the world of design, such as
the recycled plastic chair and the Olympic torch.” – Ruthie Parkman-
Eastman.
“It was fascinating, inspiring and enlightening to see the clothes of powerful
and influential women exhibited on the mannequins.” – Dill Shepherd
“Educational and inspiring design.” – Jack Jenkin
“Great views.” – Chelsea Caryl

MORE ON ART & DESIGN MUSEUM TRIP
By Ms Wheeler
On the 15th April Ms Wheeler and Ms Houghton took 30 Yr 9 students to The Design Museum and The Tate
Modern on a GCSE style research trip. They also had the opportunity to sample the artistic life of the Southbank,
watching street performers and artists on a beautifully hot spring day whilst enjoying a picnic. The students went
on to look at the work of some of the most famous contemporary artists in the world, in particular studying the
work of artists inspired by poetry and dreams. Members of the public were peering over the pupils shoulders to
catch a glimpse of their drawings as they worked. Bolingbroke certainly has artistic talent!
Quotes from the day
‘If GCSE Art research involves walking in the sunshine, drawing and taking photographs, I’m doing it.’ Mahina Bernardo
‘Miss, why is that painting worth millions of pounds? It’s just painted black all over.’ Dylan Bowles
‘I really enjoyed learning new sketchbook techniques to investigate artists work’ Jasmine Lui
These budding artists enjoyed the beautiful day

ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
AT BOLINGBROKE ACADEMY
By Ms Sherman
Our aim at Bolingbroke is to aid the language development, social integration and educational achievement of pupils
who are officially identified as children whose first language is other than English. We are fortunate to have pupils
whose first language ranges from French to Somali, therefore it is essential that we recognise and support pupils in
maximising their progress in all areas of the curriculum.
At Bolingbroke we are keen to ensure monitoring of EAL pupils’ progression so that all teachers are aware of the
variations of EAL pupils’ achievements in their subject/classes. Learning Walks frequently take place with a focus on
EAL pupils and good practice is shared across the Academy among teachers. Bolingbroke’s “non-negotiables” of
teaching help teachers embed and focus on language. Homework clubs exist to support EAL pupils in their inde-
pendent study. Twice a week there is a French Reading Group so pupils are given the chance to stretch their native
reading ability. Reading groups, Word Power Books and Ms Robinson’s careful selection of library books are all ve-
hicles in which we aim to support these pupils. We are constantly looking for new ideas to strengthen this side of
the Academy; if you have any suggestions, please contact me [email protected].
English Language Day on Thursday 23rd April
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) set up this day in 2010 "to celebrate
multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six of its official working languages
throughout the organization". It is also the date traditionally observed as the birthday of William Shakespeare.

MFL RESOURCES
Please be aware that the “Big Picture Guides” featuring all of the vocabulary for this half term has now been upload-
ed to the Bolingbroke Academy website (Curriculum tab, MFL Curriculum tab and then scroll down to the bottom
of the page. We hope that this will be useful for you in supporting your child with their weekly vocabulary learning. I
would really appreciate your support with this and would welcome any feedback on useful strategies, ways in which
this process could be improved etc. Any concerns please email [email protected]

BOLINGBROKE ACADEMY’S
BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
By Ms Tibbetts
On Thursday 26th March, 15 teams of Bolingbroke pupils came together to compete in our first ever Basketball
competition. Excitement could be felt throughout the academy during the week leading up to the event with over
60 pupils competing against one another to be crowned the winner’s. The event began with knockout stages between the teams leading onto nail biting quarter-finals and semi-finals.
The time for the final quickly approached with two well-deserved teams going head to head to see who would be
crowned champions. Both teams played well with the ball constantly swapping hands. As the final whistle went a
group of Year 9 pupils were crowned champions.
The night was coming to an end but we just had time to sneak in a match between our Year 9 winners and our
staff team – our Year 9 pupils were still undefeated at the end of the night! A huge thank you to all our teams of pupils involved, we look forward to seeing you competing next year.
Another huge thank your to our fantastic group of cheerleaders and volunteers who brought America to Boling-
broke Academy’s Sports Hall. Finally, a huge well done to our winning team: Noel Zerai Ueal Zerai Keynan Khalif Javorn Osbourne

SCIENCE TRIP
By Ariana Farmanfarmaian - Year 9
The science conference was a really fantastic event. It was great fun and I was extremely glad to go. There
were so many activities to participate in such as identifying herbs used in medicine and riding on electrical
wheelchairs.
The conference was inspirational and has really enhanced my decision to pursue a career in biology. The
only part of the day which I dreaded was the science presentation Eugenie, David and I had to do. There
was noting to worry about as everybody there - staff, teachers and pupils - were very friendly.
The day was perfect and I really hope we get a chance to go next year.
