COUPLESFORCHRISTAGAINSTTHERHBILL
AsFamiliesintheHolySpiritrenewingthefaceoftheearth,weinCouplesforChristtogetherwithallourMinistries,declarethatweareandwillalwaysbecommittedto
upholding,promotinganddefendingthedignityandsanctityofhumanlifeandthewell-
beingofthefamily.
WereiteratethatweareagainsttheReproductiveHealthBillbecausebothourCatholic
faithandreasonbasedonscientificresearchaffirmthatthisisnotthesolutiontoour
countrysproblems,butratherwillleadtobothourmoralandeconomicdeclineasa
nation.
AsCouplesforChrist:
1. Wevaluelifefromthemomentofconception.Medicalexperts(includingdoctorsfromtheHarvardMedicalSchoolandtheMayoClinic)unanimouslyagreed
thatlifebeginsatfertilization,whenthespermmeetstheegg.Thesecondarypost-fertilizationeffectofbirthcontrolpillsandtheIUDbringsaboutthedestructionof
theearlyembryo,makingthemabortifacients.
2. Wevaluethefamily.Scientificstudiesshowthatthegreateravailabilityofcontraceptivesbringsaboutthedowngradingofmarriage,morepremaritalandextramaritalsex,morefatherlesschildren,moresinglemothers,moreabortions,
andmorepoverty.Thisisnotwhatwewantforourchildren.
3. Wevaluehealth.Birthcontrolpillshavebeenidentifiedtocausecancer(inthesamecategoryascigarettesandasbestos),causestroke,andsignificantlyincrease
theriskofheartattacks.Evidencealsoshowsaconsistentassociationbetween
greatercondomuseandincreasedHIVinfectionrate.
4. WevaluetheFilipinopopulationasahumanresource.Studiesshowthatthereisnoclearassociationthatexistsbetweenpopulationgrowthandeconomic
development.Rather,awell-educated,skilled,andenabledpopulationcanbethegreatestresourceforeconomicgrowth.Furthermore,evenwithouttheRHbill,the
TotalFertilityRateinthePhilippineshasbeensteadilydecliningoverthepast50
years.PopulationcontrolmeasuressuchastheRHBillcouldpushourcountryinto
ademographicwinter.

Thus,weproposethatourgovernment,especiallyourhonorablelegislators,considerthefollowing:
1. Focusgovernmenteffortsandfundingforeducation,povertyalleviationprograms,increasedemployment,andeffectivehealthcareespeciallyfortheleadingcausesofmortalityamongFilipinos,ratherthanforcontraceptives.
2. Increaseawarenessofandprovidegreateraccesstothesafestmethodforfamily
planning,NaturalFamilyPlanning,which,ifusedcorrectly,isamorereliable
methodofspacingchildrenthanartificialbirthcontrol.
3. Upholdtherighttolifeofthemostpowerlessperson,theprebornortheunbornchild.
WeencourageeveryonetolearnmoreabouttheRHBillandhowitisNOTtheanswerto
theproblemsofpovertyandunderdevelopmentinourcountry.Furthermore,letus
advocateawayoflifethatupholdsthedignityofthehumanpersoncreatedintheimage
andlikenessofGod.
