What is happening? The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has programmed repairs for the bridge over I-35W along County Road 42 this summer. This work will be coordinated with a Dakota County project to extend the eastbound turn lane to northbound I-35W. The combination of these two projects during construction will help reduce the inconvenience to traveling motorists. Work will include: •  Repairing the County Road 42 bridge deck •  Replacing bridge joints •  Repairing sidewalks •  Extending the eastbound County Road 42 turn lane west of Buck Hill Road •  Reconstructing signal at Buck Hill Road/Southbound I-35W Ramp Why is the work needed? County Road 42 is a vital connection in the heart of the “Burnsville Center” shopping area. The road carries an average of 50,000 vehicles per day and a majority of them use the I-35W eastbound ramp from County Road 42. This can cause back-ups as far back as the Aldrich Avenue intersection. This can become a safety issue. What are the benefits? The bridge repairs will help improve the infrastructure and reduce the need for significantly larger maintenance repairs in the future while the turn lane extension will improve safety. Work staging challenges: County Road 42 carries over 50,000 vehicles per day which means construction will have a significant impact on traffic. The work on the County Road 42 bridge will be done one side at a time in two stages: Stage 1: Full closure and detour of the westbound County Road 42 bridge spanning I-35W for up to 4 weeks. Stage 2: Full closure and detour of eastbound County Road 42 bridge spanning I-35W for up to 4 weeks. Project Newsletter | March 2016 Inside Why is Dakota County hosting this open house?
