PREPARATIONBackground: Sand, seal, sand. Base one coat Cash-mere Beige. Transfer on lines for boards and shelf. Using 3/4" wash brush, apply Weathered Wood hori-zontally to horizontal boards and vertically to vertical boards. I applied a little here-and-there to the top edges of the shelf. Dry well. Using same brush, base with Oyster Beige, again brushing horizontally or vertically, depending on the boards. Dry well. I sanded off a bit more on the shelf to look more like peeling paint. I taped off the shelf with 3/4" tape to keep the edges nice and straight. Shade under each horizontal board, above and below shelf, on both sides of each vertical board with Espresso, using 3/4" brush. When dry, shade both sides and across arched top with Espresso. Reinforce shading in darkest areas—under shelf, “V” areas, left side at tops of horizontal boards, etc—with Asphaltum. Remove tape if using. Trace on pumpkins.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS Note: I did all the highlighting and shading on the pumpkins using the highlighter brushes, picking up each additional color on the dirty brush. Most was done using the 1/2" brush, the 1/4" brush for tighter areas, and the 3/4" brush for the left and bottom shading. The fi rst highlight and shadow is the widest, then they get progressively narrower.

Pumpkin 1Base Spiced Pumpkin. Highlight with Tangerine, then Orange Twist. Pick up Primary Yellow and add only to brightest areas; reinforce with Oyster Beige, only on right side. Shade with Tangelo Orange, then Burnt Orange, then a brush-mix of Burnt Orange + As-phaltum (approx. 2:1), then Asphaltum in the darkest areas only. The shading to form the ridges starts at the bottom and pulls up, pulling up a shorter distance each time.

Pumpkin 2Base Pumpkin. Highlight Tangerine, then Orange Twist. Pick up Primary Yellow and add only to bright-est areas; reinforce with Oyster Beige, only on right side. Shade with Spice Pumpkin, then Scarlet, Georgia Clay, brush-mix of Georgia Clay + Asphaltum (approx. 1:1).

Pumpkin 3Base Tangerine. Highlight with Orange Twist, then Primary Yellow, then Oyster Beige in brightest areas only. Add more Oyster Beige to right side only. I added the “shadow” areas on both sides of the ridges, using the 1/4" highlighter and pulling in toward highlights, using Pumpkin, Spiced Pumpkin, Tangelo, brush-mix of Tangelo + Asphaltum (approx. 3:1).

Pumpkin 4Base Avocado Dip. Highlight Chartreuse Yellow, then Primary Yellow, then Oyster Beige; reinforce with Oyster Beige on right side only. Shade Light Avocado, Avocado, Plantation Pine, brush-mix of Plantation Pine + Asphaltum (approx. 1:1).

StemsBase Cashmere Beige. I fl oated all the shadows, at both sides of stems, on both sides of ridges, top and bot-tom with the following colors: Light Avocado, Avocado, Plantation Pine—try not to lose the base as this is your highlight. Dampen stems on pumpkins 2 & 3 with water and add thin lines and “dots” on highlight areas with liner brush and Cashmere Beige. Using 1/4" highlighter, dry-brush in some highlights with Cashmere Beige and Oyster Beige. Add shadows to darkest areas with Midnite Green.

Blue RibbonBase Sapphire. Using dry 1/2" highlighter pick up Sap-phire, take out excess on palette, pick up Cashmere Beige, take out excess and scrub in highlights; repeat, adding more Cashmere Beige to dirty brush; repeat, adding Oyster Beige to brush; repeat, adding more Oyster Beige. Clean brush and take out all moisture. Pick up Sapphire and take out excess, then pick up Midnite Green, take out excess and add to shadow ar-eas at bottom and top under “rolled” highlights; repeat, adding more Midnite Green to dirty brush. Lettering and Seal: Undercoat with Chartreuse Yellow; base with Extreme Sheen 14 K. Gold. If highlight are too bright, wash over ribbon with Sapphire. Cord and Grommet: Be sure you have your pumpkin color showing through the hole at the top of the ribbon. I based in the area with my pumpkin base color, then washed on the fi rst two shading colors. When dry, line in grommet with a brush-mix of Oyster Beige + Espresso (approx. 1:2). Add a few touches of Chartreuse Yellow here-and-there for highlight and Espresso for shadow. Line over with Extreme Sheen 14 K. Gold.

Red RibbonBase Country Red. Add highlight as above fi rst using Tangelo Orange, then adding Pumpkin to brighten. Shade as above fi rst loading brush in Country Red, then Midnite Green. Lettering and Seal: Same as above. Cord and Grommet: Same as above.

LetteringUsing stencil and dry #6 blending brush, stencil on us-ing Purple Mix.

FINISHINGAdd touches of Country Red to pumpkin stems and here-and-there on pumpkin shadow areas as well as shadow areas of boards. Do the same with Sapphire Blue. Add touches of purple mix to pumpkins. Re-fl ected light on pumpkins is Chartreuse Yellow. If this doesn't show up enough for you, add some with Avo-cado Dip. Also add a few light touches of Avocado Dip and Spiced Pumpkin to bottom edges of some boards. Outside edge is painted Plantation Pine. Varnish with DecoArt Soft Touch varnish.
