Executive Committee Meets

FROM THE PRESIDENT – Brian Lammers, Hamilton CCB

Just around the corner!

Outside the beautiful land of Iowa is in a blanket of snow, the temps keep going down and the indoor paper work keeps piling up. But, just around the corner it is time to mentally prepare for a new season of recreation and fun.

To help you prepare you for all this fun, your CCPOA organization has partnered with Iowa, Pocahontas and Polk Counties in offering some great law enforcement learning and awareness workshops. In this newsletter you will find the agendas for all three spring regional workshops. Please take the time to register early for one of these great workshops and do not forget to thank these counties for hosting them.

The CCPOA Executive Committee met at Winterfest to start planning the 2011 fall workshop. The dates of the annual workshop will be October 3,4,5. We are already in the process of confirming the Ramada Hotel, ILEA, MCTC and the ranges. We also have three new appointed members to the committee. Please welcome Charlie Finch, Park Ranger for Polk County, Scott Bahmann, Park Ranger for Benton County and C.J. Hughes, Director for Monroe County. Please do not hesitate to contact any committee member if you have questions, thoughts or concerns.

Nick Beeck (Plymouth) reports “good fishing” last fall as the county was cleaning up the lake at Hillview Recreation Area. Nick indicates that this is a small one as the BIG ONE got away when the reins broke and the saddle fell off. Ahhhh…..to have nothing better to do on a lazy late-summer afternoon ☺ Beeck currently serves the CCPOA as Secretary on the Exec. Committee.

A Training Files Reminder... (A refresher on the law & some guidelines ☺)

501 – 8.1(80B) Minimum in-service training requirements. All regular law enforcement officers shall meet the following mandatory minimum in-service training requirements. 8.1(1) Firearms training. A regular law enforcement officer must qualify with all duty handguns annually on a course of fire approved by the ILEA and must successfully fire a minimum score as established by ILEA. This rule applies to only those law enforcement officers who are authorized to carry handguns by their employing agency. 8.1(2) CPR Training. A regular law enforcement officer shall maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification as required by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, or another group recognized by ILEA. 8.1(3) General training. In addition to the requirements of subrules 8.1(1) and 8.1(2), a regular law enforcement officer must receive a minimum of 12 hours per year, or 36 hours every 3 years, of law enforcement related in-service training. Whether training is law enforcement related shall be determined by the employing agency administrator.

Pertaining to not only the training that is offered by the CCPOA, but for most all training…. please note the following:

1. Remember – the reason we document, document, document our training is so that when our experience or authority is called into question via the courts….we have EXCELLENT & COMPLETELY documented sources of our training. 2. It is YOUR JOB as an individual officer to ensure that YOUR FILES are complete and documented – to the letter! 3. YOUR incomplete or sloppy training file(s) translates into your inconsistency and sloppiness as an officer to the court. 4. DO NOT include travel time to and/or from your training as a portion of your training hours. 5. DO NOT include lunch, breaks or other casual time as part of the hours for a particular training day or event. 6. Firearms and CPR Certifications are NOT TO BE INCLUDED in your annual 12 hours of required general training. 7. The CCPOA provides supplemental training during our annual Firearms Training Day (clearing of weapons, weapon retention drills, etc.) – this training MAY BE INCLUDED (as long as it is documented) in your required annual 12 hours of general training. 8. If you do not participate in our Firearms Training Day each fall, and only attend the Tuesday/Wednesday portion of the workshop – documenting 12 hours of training would be inaccurate. (ie: Our 2010 workshop only provided 10.25 hours of in-service training credits on Tues./Wed.) This is why you need to take advantage of our spring training opportunities. IF you miss our annual workshop Tuesday training – you will need to pick up your HAZ-MAT & ILEECP hours elsewhere.
