    Students will be assessed through teacher observation of the research and information-gathering

    sessions as well as through the final product presentation.

    Follow-up

    This lesson will be featured in a school-wide cultural fair which showcases the cultural

    significance of other countries. The travel brochures created in this project will be used as

    guides for the fair to introduce other students, parents and teachers to the various countries

    represented in the fair.

    Differentiations

    Gifted/Talented: May choose to submit final project in audio or video format. Final product can

    showcase more than one of each of the required components.

    At Risk/Learning Disabled: Final product can be simplified to locating name of country and maychoose between listing a notable person, animal, or food from the country. Only responsible for

    3 of the five checklist requirements.

    Middle School: Students may present a travel brochure, commercial, or documentary about their

    chosen country. Students will include a detailed list of places of interest, foods to try and

    animals to watch for. Students will be held responsible for citing sources accurately and

    including a minimum of four.

    High School: Students will submit final product in commercial or documentary format. Students

    will include one current issue concerning the people, places, natural wildlife, or political standingof the country and argue a proposed plan of action in regards to it. Students will include

    references of newspaper, encyclopedic, print, and online resources.

    Big 6 Lesson Planning Form

    Session 1 Step #1 - Task Definition : Students will select one country from a listof pre-selected countries. They will gather information as well as

    graphics on their country from the Internet and present the information

    in the form of a travel brochure.

    Step #2 - Information Seeking Strategies : Students will determine

    the best possible sources of information from books in the media center

    and the Internet.

    Session 2 Step #3 - Location and Access: Students will visit the media center to

    locate print resources and to access online resources. Approved

    resources for the internet will be the Chicago Public Schools

    Databases. Students will visit Maps 101 through the online databases

    to locate the flag and map of their country. Students will use

    KidsInfoBits online database, print and online encyclopedias and

    general reference books to find information on the country's people,

    key locations, foods, animals and languages. Introduced in Session 1,

    revisited in Session 2.

    Step #4 - Use of Information: The students will use the information

    gathered to prepare a travel brochure, which will include, a graphic ofthe flag, key people, places and animals, as well as foods found in the

    country. Students will begin compiling and organizing information

    in Session 2.

    Step #5 - Synthesis: The students will organize the information from

    multiple resources and present the information in the form of a travel

    brochure. At home.

    Session 3 Step #6 -Evaluation: Students will be assessed on the final productusing the Grading Checklist and allow classmatesto view.
