DLF Medal Round

DLF Mixed Match Play 2016

The DLF Mixed Match Play Championship Semi-final rounds were put on the back burner due to the Hero Men’s Indian Open 2017 and only resumed in the third week of March. Both the Semi-final matches saw tough resistance.

Rahul & Tanisha managed to book their final berth by beating Latika & Sumit Khaneja on the 17th hole. In the other match, Monica & Chandresh vs Sanjiv & Mukta, it was a see saw right up to the 18th hole before Sanjiv & Mukta wrested the game from their opponents and moved to the Finals.

The Championship culminated on the 27th of March with Mukta Malhotra and Sanjiv Khanna defeating Tanisha Kalyan & Rahul Aggarwal convincingly. Both Mukta & Sanjiv played a solid round. They crossed over the front nine with a hole lead and in the back nine, only lost the 11th hole thus closing the match on the 15th Hole and lifting the DLF Mixed Match Play Trophy.

Hole-In-One Club

On 25th March, Sunil Rekhi’s golfing dream came true! He achieved his first Hole-in-One! The 8th Hole on the Arnold Palmer Course succumbed to his 8 iron shot and he etched his name on the Club’s Honour Board. The feat was witnessed by his son Siddhant and playing partner Neeraj Sharma.

Festival Of Hope

Hope is like the last leaf a tree holds on to, knowing after each chilling winter a breezy verdure spring will follow. On 21st of March, 2017, Shalini Wadhwa Vig and co-sponsor DLF Crest reinforced that HOPE and celebrated the spirit and courage of cancer survivors with the high powered fund raiser “Festival of Hope” (season 10). Modern School Charity Golf Tournament

Someone said “We cannot do great things on Earth, only small things with great love.” That’s exactly what the MSOSAians do! Each year they host a Golf Tournament to raise funds which help send deserving under privileged children to their Alma Mater Modern School! As always, Rajiv Singh a modernite himself, contributed to the cause by graciously sponsoring the event.

This year, leading the brigade of 128 young and old golfers into the course, was senior most Modernite Maj. General Ajay Sood (Batch of 1961) and the youngest Eshaan Piri (2015 Batch). The event was managed by Vishaal Uppal (Batch of 94) of Sports Boulevard, for only he knows how best to manage this highly charged lot. Not giving them a chance to complain of unearthly hours, he teed them off to an afternoon start. There were prizes galore to be won and the game was keenly contested. Off the course and back to the pavilion, they were joined by their spouses at the Lakeside Party Lawn. The atmosphere was festive and full of old school bonhomie as everyone settled down to enjoy the evening and await the results of their labour on the Gary Player Course. The Prize Distribution was a lengthy affair as there were prizes and prizes in every imaginable category! Mission accomplished, the MSOSAians sat back and partied late into the night.

DLF in association with the Heritage Motoring Club of India, organized the DLF Vintage Car Rally on 19th March.Much to the delight of our members 28 magnificent grand dames purred down the driveway and graced our porch. Rightfully preening themselves for each gleaming beauty came with its own story to tell. Some of the notable variants which formed part of the convoy, included a 1925 Rolls Royce Phantom 1, A 1930 Stutz Series M, 4 Passenger Speedster, Dual Cowl, Le Baron and a 1933 Rolls Royce amongst others.Long-standing members Dharshan & Gunmala Singh are proud owners of not one but 3 of these beauties on display - Plymouth Belvedere Convertible - 1952 , Studebaker Champion – 1953 and a Whippet Overland -1926. Hero Men's Indian Open 2017

The Hero Indian Open returned after a eight year long hiatus to a brand new stage – the new 7684 yards, par 72, Gary Player Championship Course. The 2017 edition kicked off with 144 golfers from around the world, including 11 ex-Indian Open Champions throwing their caps into the arena to take a shot at glory on this much talked about ultra challenging DLF course. Leading a 39 strong Indian charge was defending Champion SSP Chawrasia. Notable among them were Anirban Lahiri (ranked 73), Shiv Kapur, Arjun Atwal, Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa, C. Muniyappa and promising youngsters Shubhankar Sharma, S. Chikkarangappa and amateur Rigel Fernandes from USA. Representing the International brigade among others were top ranked players, Scott Hend (69), Kiradech Aphinbarnrat (83) and Marquee player World No. 26 Rafa Cabrera Bello of Spain.

The week started on a happy note with the Indian team winning the Hero Skills Challenge and the social golfers having a blast playing the two Pro-Ams. The morning Pro-Am was won by Pro Chikkarangappa, Milkha Singh, K.K. Sandhu and Manish Sanwalka and the afternoon edition saw home team of Aakash Ohri, Manav Sardana and Gaurav Dogra bag the 1st Runner-up trophy.

The fun and games over, the professionals got set to transact serious business over the next four days. Already tepid and cautious after sampling the course in their practice round, mother nature decided to add inclement weather disruptions over the next three days to further test their mettle. The tough and challenging course condition took a toll on many a player. After the first round itself the field got reduced to 131 players. Five just withdrew, three cited injuries and another five just did not finish the hole and were disqualified.

Day One, saw Italy’s Matteo Manassero (68) take the clubhouse lead with Eddie Pepperell just a shot behind and Danny Chia and Angrlo Que with 70s at third place. Day Two, had SSP Chawrasia (72-67) take sole lead followed by David Horsey (66-74) and Carlos Pigem (69-73), The cut was applied at six over 150 and 69 players remained in contention for a share of the 1.75 million US$ pie. Day Three, SSP (- 9) held on to his overnight lead of 2 shots over Carlos (-7). David dropped back and Gavin Green (-6) moved into 3rd position.

The Final day saw fortunes falter, Green and Carlos kept dropping shots and were not able to surmount the pressure. Gavin’s run of 6 birdies the previous day ran dry and he finished at -2 along with Jameson Scott and Manassero. Carlos slipped further down to join Anirban and Rafa at tied fifth. A determined SSP, calmly measured each shot and maintained an even keel throughout to finish an incredible round at -10 to successfully defend his title and win the coveted trophy two years in a row!

2017 Special Olympics World Games

It is a privilege that DLF Golf & Country Club member, Dr Kartikay Saini, led the Indian contingent of 125 sportspersons at the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics World Games on 18 March 2017 at Schladming, Austria. India was one of the 107 countries in the Winter Olympics represented by 2700 athletes. The Opening Ceremony was a mesmerizing showcase event, witnessed by 20000 spectators on the foothills of the ski slopes at the Planai Stadium in Schladming. The games included seven disciplines including Alpine Skiing, Snow Boarding, Snow Shoeing, Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Floor Hockey, Floor Ball (and Unified Floor Ball), at the mega event.

Dr Kartikay Saini incidentally, is the Chairman of Special Olympics Bharat, an organization which has 1.4 million athletes and 1,40,000 coaches across the country. Our 'special' athletes have once again done the country proud. They have raked in a rich haul of 73 medals - 37 gold, 10 silver and 26 bronze! Said Air Marshal (retd.) Keelor, current CEO SOB “Our team of specially abled have truly embodied what SOB stands for - to keep trying and emerge triumphant despite the odds”.

On 31st March, in marched 80 boys and girls, of 5 to 18 years, to participate in the 45th Lufthansa Junior Golf Tournament, presented by BMW in association with Callaway Golf. The event was hosted here for the first time. Sakshity Pureandre, a KG class student from Qutab Golf Club aged 5 yrs and 9 months was the youngest player of the tournament. Another prodigy in the making? The young golfers were super excited to play and were raring to test their mettle. The tournament is conducted in 5 IGU age categories, we had 2 short guns starts on the AP Course in order to accommodate them all. Mr Vishal Bharti did the honours and gave away the prizes to the E category winners and later in the evening the A-D category winners received their prizes from Ms. Sangeeta Sharma of Lufthansa and Mr Prashant Singh of Callaway.

Feathered friends on your course by Raghav Dhall

Indian Peafowl

The Indian Peafowl is a bird I am sure you all see every time you go to the golf club. Being the National Bird of India, we are familiar with the spectacular appearance of the male species. The male’s neck and breast are a glossy iridescent blue, the most distinctive feature being the train of feathers at the rear which have striking blue and green eyespots. The Peahen has a glossy green neck and shares the crest feature with the peacock, while the rest of the body is a duller brown.

Indian Peafowl is amongst the largest birds. The train of feathers in the rear, adds almost five feet to the length of the peacock, making it an overall 8-9 feet. The peacock sheds its train every year after the mating season and these are widely collected and sold. There are around 100 to 175 feathers in the peacock’s train, which are attached to short and stiff quills. The peacock can display its entire fan of feathers and typically males with the greatest number of eyespots win the most females. They are omnivorous and feed on seeds, insects, fruits and small mammals and reptiles.

Did you know?

A breeding male establishes and defends a small territory called “lek”, which is used for courtship displays. Peahens visit multiple leks before making a choice of the male.

Aeration – a breath of fresh air!Spring is here for 2017 which spells rising temperatures and golf course renovation time! To be able to provide world class conditions similar to those of the 2017 Hero Men’s Indian Open it is essential that the turf receives some repair and renovation. What is aeration and why is it necessary? In a nutshell, aeration is a method of soil cultivation that relieves compaction and facilitates gaseous exchange. This procedure also provides the opportunity to amend the soil profile according to soil analysis. Aeration practices are necessary to help balance the agronomic system that can become adversely affected throughout the year due to continual environmental and physical stressors that are required to produce quality playing conditions. With a healthy agronomic profile and the right environmental conditions the playing surfaces can be manipulated to produce certain outcomes whist a system that has agronomic issues will not respond as required and will often require significantly more inputs. The procedure is generally quite disruptive to the putting surfaces for a period of 3-4 weeks due to sand topdressing and mechanical practices. However, after this period the putting surfaces slowly begin to regain smoothness and speed.

Yash Jain started the year on a winning note by scoring a perfect 'Hole in One' at the prestigious Captain's Cup 2016-17 held at Army Golf Course, New Delhi, besides winning a few other prizes in Junior Boys category. He was felicitated by General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Army Staff.

PLAY THE CHIP AND RUN FROM A DOWNHILL LIE

Pic 2: From a downhill lie, we should expect to get a low ball flight, which in turn will make the ball run more after landing. Make an adjustment in the club you choose, accordingly.Hope it helps!

Pic 1: Shows the set up for a chip shot from a downhill lie. Keep the ball in the centre of the stance and hands forward. Now tilt the spine forward (towards the target) such that it is perpendicular to the slope. This will allow you to take the club back and through along the slope. You should stay down through impact and feel that the club is chasing the ball low.

Vani finished with a total score of 216 and won by an impressive margin of nine strokes in the Hero Women's Pro Golf Tour 2017 - Leg 6, that was played at Poona Club Golf Course from 22nd - 24th March 2017. Gaurika Bishnoi and Amandeep Drall tied second with identical totals of 225 after 54 holes.

This month, let’s have a look at the next parameter as measured by the launch Monitor TrackMan – Carry.Definition: Carry is the amount of distance that the ball carries in the air before it strikes the ground. The carry mentioned is the carry of the golf ball at zero elevation or the distance the ball travelled in the air before it would have hit the ground at the same level from where it was hit irrespective of whether the area that it landed at was above or below the level it was hit from. We all

know that while hitting a ball to a higher landing area, the amount of carry distance decreases and vice versa. This is because when the landing area is above the level that a player is playing a shot from, the ball is not able to complete its full downward journey and in case the landing area is below the level that a player is playing from, the golf ball travels extra through the air thereby increasing the carry distance. So, what would be the ideal carry distance and what would it depend upon? The ideal carry distance changes with the club that you are hitting and depends upon three major factors namely, club head speed, smash factor and launch angle. Club head speed is the major factor that affects the carry distance of a shot with faster club head speeds giving you more carry distance. Second on the list is the smash factor or simply the centeredness of contact. It goes without saying that the more centered the contact, the more energy is given to the golf ball and the more the carry distance will be. Lastly, the launch angle of the golf ball also affects the carry distance with higher launch angles giving you more carry and lower launch angles reducing carry distance.Playing in today’s modern golf courses such as the DLF Golf & Country Club, it is imperative for every player to know precisely their carry distance with each club. On many occasions, we are hitting shots into landing areas or green that are either above us or below where we are. Also, there are many times when the flag position is just above a bunker or just beyond the water and we must know the yardage to the flag precisely as well as we know our carry distance to ensure that we can execute the correct shot. Only then can we decide on which club and what type of shot to play and then commit to the same.As we saw in the Hero Indian Open recently, the precision of the shots into the green is very essential to succeed on our course and thereby it is crucial to know our carry distance with every club in the bag!
