Scale of Threat The current threat to the UK from International Terrorism remains ‘SEVERE’,
meaning that an attack is highly likely.
Over the past four years the UK Intelligence Community and Police have
foiled 20 attacks, including 7 in the past 7 months.
In the year to June 2017, there were 379 arrests for terrorism related
offences, a 68 % increase on the previous year (226).
The principal threat comes from DAESH (also known as ISIL/ISIS/IS), and Al-
Qaida, and groups and individuals who are directed, enabled or inspired by
them.
The level of threat is complex and ranges from lone actors intent on
carrying out crude but effective attacks, to sophisticated networks
pursuing ambitious and coordinated plots
The Police and Security Services are currently carrying out hundreds of
investigations and making arrests on a near daily basis. Around 600 cases
are being handled at any one time, involving around 3000 individuals.
Communities defeat terrorism. Counter Terrorism Policing would not have
had the success it has without the support of all our communities.
