THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES SCOTLAND NEWSLETTER

COMMONWEALTH YOUTH GAMES SPECIAL EDITION OCTOBER 2008

Pune 2008 is the first Youth Games to which all 71 Commonwealth countries have been

invited to take part with 351 medals to be won. Scotland will compete in

eight sports with the following number of athletes in each:

In August, in the shadow of the Wallace Monument in Stirling, Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) announced the 44 athletes selected to represent Scotland at the third Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India 12-18 October 2008.

Bravehearts bound for PuneMichael Cavanagh

Congratulating the team, Michael Cavanagh, Chairman of CGS said: “l am confident that we have selected an outstanding Youth Games Team to compete in Pune, with the standards continuing to rise with every Games cycle. “Whilst winning medals is important, the major benefit of the Commonwealth Youth Games is exposing young athletes to this level of competition in a multi-sport environment. It is the ideal preparation event for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010 and Glasgow in 2014. “I wish them every success and look forward to cheering them on in Pune.”

Commonwealth Youth Games – our track record Scotland hosted the inaugural Commonwealth Youth

Games in Edinburgh in 2000. Australia hosted the second Youth Games in Bendigo in 2004.

In 2000 the Scottish Team won 32 medals including 3 gold to finish sixth on the medal table, with 10 countries taking part.

In 2004 the Scottish Team won 52 medals including 12 gold to finish fourth on the medal table, with 12 countries taking part.

In 2004 swimming was the most successful sport winning 7 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze medals. All 14 members of the swimming team won at least one medal.

12 athletes who competed in Bendigo went on to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, three of them, Andrew Hunter, Robbie Renwick (swimming), and Adam Cox (gymnastics) won medals. In addition Kirsty Balfour and Todd Cooper who won medals in swimming at the 2000 Youth Games also won medals in 2006.

With their places now confirmed it was time for athletes to focus on final preparations for their biggest sporting competition to date. They all gathered in Stirling in September to get a final briefing, which included medical and anti doping education sessions and a media skills presentation. The highlight for many was collecting their Commonwealth Youth Games kit, a symbol of the first time they will represent Scotland in a multi-sport Games and hopefully a taste of things to come. Amongst the team members keen to collect their kit were some familiar names with strong links to Commonwealth Games success. The McColgan dynasty lives on, with daughter Eilish qualified for the 1500m, whilst Lynsey Sharp, daughter of Commonwealth Games gold medallist and representative Cameron and Carol Sharp will compete in the 800m. In smallbore shooting, Jennifer McIntosh is the daughter of multiple Commonwealth Games medallist Shirley and father Donald a representative in two Games.

Scotland – Pune 2008 A team of 44 athletes from 8 sports will represent

Scotland in the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games. Numbers were set by the Games organisers and is 24 fewer than in Bendigo.

All athletes competing are 18 years of age or under and will be targeting the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the future.

To be selected for the Scottish team, athletes had to be an equivalent of top two in Great Britain and in most cases better the medal standard from the last Youth Games in 2004.

The Pune Games will be a new competition environment for all the Team and give a taste of the cultural, climatic and competitive conditions associated with competing in India for those who qualify for the next Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010.

Transported by Emirates Airlines, each team member will have a luggage allowance of up to 35kg including specialist sports equipment totaling a massive 2135kg. Pole vaults will be the most challenging items to transport.

Stewart Maxwell MSP, Minister for Communities and Sport, Scottish Government As Minister for Communities and Sport, I would like to extend my congratulations to the team members and officials on their selection for the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune. As young athletes you have demonstrated outstanding effort and dedication in pursuit of personal excellence to get to this stage and I have no doubt that competing in these Games will provide you with a valuable entrée into international competition. With the Commonwealth Games in Delhi only two years away and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to look forward to, the Commonwealth Youth Games is an exciting concept and provides the ideal platform for competing at future events.

Steve Reid, Retail Director of Clydesdale Bank Clydesdale Bank is proud to be a long term partner of Scottish sport. As well as sponsoring the Scottish Commonwealth Games Team for the 2006 Games in Melbourne and the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, the Bank is also supporting the 2008 Scottish Commonwealth Youth Games team. We recognise the dedication and commitment of these athletes and their significant achievement in being selected. We are proud to support the team in their endeavours and everyone at Clydesdale Bank wishes them all the best for the Games.

Louise Martin CBE, Chair of sportscotland

Athletes, many congratulations on your selection for the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games Team. It is fantastic to see the length and breadth of Scotland represented from Troon to Aberdeen to The Isle of Islay. The selection standards have been rigorous and the places limited so simply making the team itself is a great achievement. However I am confident that now you are on the team, you will rise to the challenge of performing at your very best. You will enjoy and benefit from the experience of competing at such a big event and contribute to the tradition of a successful Scottish Commonwealth Youth Games Team.

Cheering on the teamThe Scottish Government, through sportscotland, is proud to support Scotland’s athletes and sports governing bodies by providing financial and technical assistance to help our athletes and coaches perform at the highest level. Commonwealth Games Scotland have been extremely busy in their preparations for these Games to ensure that Scotland is among the best prepared teams to meet the challenge of representing their country and performing to their best in India. I hope you enjoy the spirit of the Commonwealth Youth Games and come away from Pune with good performances, lasting memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. I would like to offer my best wishes to all those participating in the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games. Good luck to all competitors and I look forward to being there personally to cheer you on. With every good wish for your success.Leis gach deagh dhùrachd airson ur soirbheachail.

sportscotland has always believed in the important role that the Commonwealth Youth Games plays in a young athletes’ development, which is why we provided Lottery funding to support the inaugural Games in Edinburgh in 2000 and why we continue to strongly support Commonwealth Games Scotland at both youth and senior level. The track record of the Youth Games speak for themselves not only in terms of medals won, but more importantly in terms of the number of athletes that go on to compete successfully at the senior Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games. Indeed I am sure you will have been inspired by the achievements of fellow Scots in Beijing in recent weeks. I wish you all the very best of luck in Pune and I hope that you can build on your Youth Games experience to go on to compete and win medals for Scotland in 2014 when the Commonwealth Games come to Glasgow.

Kirsty Balfour

I had a great time competing for Scotland in the first ever Commonwealth Youth Games team in Edinburgh. It was a great experience and helped me prepare for what was to come in the Commonwealth Games in Manchester and Melbourne and at the last two Olympic Games. I wish all the team the very best of luck.

Adam Cox: Going to Bendgio in 2004 was a great experience, not only competing which gave me the confidence when going on to Melbourne to win a medal, but making friends from other sports and countries that I have become very close with over the years. Take it all in, enjoy yourselves and do your best. Nobody can ask more of you. Good luck!”

Emirates is delighted to be the official airline for the Scottish Commonwealth Youth Games Team travelling to Pune in India this October. Everyone at Emirates would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the team the best of luck at the Games.

In June it was the turn of Josh Taylor, who took the honours in recognition of his second place in the British Youth Championships, which capped a spectacular medal-winning summer for the Prestonpans boxer. In just two months Taylor, who competes in the 51kg Flyweight category, has not only proved a worthy contender for the British title, he also won the Youth Multi-Nations event in Finland, backed up by bronze medals in the Croatian and Russian stages of the Multi-Nations competition.

a silver,” said Myra. “Then I got a gold in the under 17 AAAs.”

Myra is the Scottish under 17 record holder and just three days after she was selected for Pune she broke it again throwing 52.02 metres. Her best this season has improved by over four metres from 47.62m. Myra has surprisingly been a thrower for just two years. Her background is in piano, theatre and Scottish country dance, similar to Shirley Webb who came from ballet. “Being selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games is brilliant, something I’ve been thinking about for over a year and everything I’ve been doing has been geared towards this,” she said. Last but not least, swimmer Andrew Haslett from Edinburgh was selected as August athlete of the month. Andrew has spent most of the last year recovering from injury. But a recent return to form saw him win three gold medals at the British Youth Championships in August and post four qualifying times that saw him selected for Pune as the top ranked Scottish swimmer. “I really wanted to go to the Commonwealth Youth Games, but at the start of the season I didn’t think there was a chance I would make it. I had eight months totally out of the pool. “But I went to the British Youth Championships in August, PBd in every race and won three golds which I totally didn’t expect.” There is now all to play for, with performances in Pune about to decide the Clydesdale Bank Athlete of the Games and two runners-up. The winner will scoop £500 towards their training fund and the runners-up £250 each. £100 will also be awarded to the winner’s club. Good luck to all our athletes!

Young Scottish Talent recognised by Clydesdale Bank

The Clydesdale Bank Athlete of the Month programme has continued over a busy sporting summer with some excellent contenders shining through.

A former British Taekwondo Champion at 15, Taylor was encouraged to go to boxing to strengthen his hands. In his very first session Josh felt a natural affinity with boxing and within two months had fully transferred his allegiance to the sport. Taylor has since moved to Gilmerton Athletic Boxing Club, managed by Rab Young. He is a member of the Scotland squad and is the Scottish title holder.

Myra Perkins the 16 year old hammer thrower from Falkirk earned the Athlete of the Month award for July following an amazing summer of performances. In April’s Scottish Hammer GP Series at Grangemouth, her throw of 48.60m was a personal best and 60cm longer than the Youth Commonwealth Games qualifying standard. Since then she has bettered the qualifying standard on seven occasions. “I also went to the British AAAs under 20 Championships and came away with
