Why choose the Foundation Degree in Counselling?

As with all counselling training the course is not to be confused with personal therapy and it is advisable to think carefully about enrolling if you have experienced a major loss or trauma in recent months.

The course is orientated in the Humanistic Approach, with a focus on Person Centred Therapy. Psychodynamic theory, CBT and brief therapy arealso covered in applicable modules.

What will I study? How is it taught and how will I learn?

Candidates will study the following modules: Year One: • The Core Model • Comparative Models of Counselling• Professional Issues in counselling• Counselling Skills and Practice• Personal Development (level 1)

Year Two: • Supervised Counselling Practice (minimum 100 supervised counselling hours in work placement) in addition to class time which maximise the bene�ts of work based learning (subject to approval you may begin counselling in January of your �rst year)• Introduction to Counselling Research• Contemporary Issues in counselling Personal Development (level 2) including facilitated encounter groups

In addition, candidates are strongly advised to undertake at least 20 hours of personal therapy per year. Candidates must have successfullycompleted year one modules and have an appropriate counselling placement in order to progress to the second year of the course.

You will engage in taught classes, that include group and individual work and observed and tutor assessed counselling skills practice, with an appropriate level of experiential and self directed learning, study and research.

You will attend college on a part time basis for two 3.5 hour sessions per week and these will be on the same day/ evening. A personal tutor will also be responsible for your tutorials in addition to your class time.

Assessment of learning will be ongoing throughout the course and will include:

• Referenced assignments• Case Studies• Re�ective Learning Journals• Observed Counselling skills • Supervision Reports• Presentations• Work based evidenceIn addition feedback from lecturers and peers is supportively embedded in the course.

Our well established lecturing sta� are all experienced counsellors with relevant teaching experience.

Progression Opportunities

Candidates who successfully complete the Foundation Degree may wish to continue their studies to the 3rd year BA honours degree level, which is delivered at the University of Sunderland.

Career Opportunities

Counselling and counselling related full and part-time jobs may be available in schools, colleges, youth agencies, the NHS, the voluntary sector and with large employers of sta�. In addition, counselling quali�cations enhance employment opportunities in a wide range of employment areas. Communication and listening skills at this level prove to be most useful in the work place.

What quali�cations do I need?

The minimum entry requirements that students need are: • have successfull completion of a recognised level three quali�cation in counselling.• skills and personal qualities which would enable you to become a re�ective practitioner.• to demonstrate an ability to study at Foundation Degree level; and • be over 18 years of age. There is no upper age limit and the course attracts students from a wide range of backgrounds and ages• be able to carry out at least 100 hours of supervised counselling practice in an external placement in line with BACP and course requirements• Full commitment to the 2 year programme is essential

Where and when does the course run?

The course is delivered at the Coast Road Campus of Tyne Metropolitan College in excellent custom built facilities, which includecounselling booths with state of the art recording equipment. FD students may also enjoy a designated HE common room/study area.

Each year of the Foundation Degree in Counselling is currently delivered over 32 weeks from the Autumn Term (Sept start)There are alternative study time options (subject to availability).

In year one you will have the opportunity to gain more in depth knowledge of the person-centred approach to counselling in terms of both theory and practice. This will include exploration of Rogers’ personality model and the key concepts of the theory i.e. the actualising tendency, conditions of worth and the self structure. You will gain a working knowledge of professional issues in the context of ethical and legal considerations, the role of supervision, being culturally sensitive and safe practice for the client and counsellor. You will develop the ability to critically analyse di�erent theoretical models of counselling including CBT, Gestalt, Psychodynamic, Solution Focused therapy, Transactional Analysis and Behavioural therapy. Your skills work will be developed and supported with tutor and peer feedback in state-of-the-art counselling booths unique to TyneMet college. You will also learn about yourself; a critical aspect of counselling study. This part of the course invites personal development and growth. It includes studying a variety of human growth and development theories, Inner child work, the Johari window, the Karpman Drama triangle, attachment theory, group process & dynamics and much more. In year two your learning continues and encompasses counselling research. Your contempory issues modulewill give you the opportunity to meet professionals in the industry who will provide workshops on their specialist counselling knowledge and experiences. Your counselling placement practice will be supported by the College with group supervision and a seriesof speci�c workshops highlighting additional ways to work with clients. These will include Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques, creative approaches to therapy and working with challenging clients. Your personal development takes place and is supported in facilitated encounter group work. Throughout your time with us at TyneMet you will have the opportunity to attend placement fairs, personal tutorials and our annual memorial lecture as well as enjoy the new and dedicated University of Sunderland HE Gateway Common room.
