COUNSELING INTERVENTIONS
NEED FOR COUNSELING INTERVENTION A intervention in counseling is needed when a
Family member, friend, or possibly an employer
Feels that a person is in a crisis (unable to care for self, a danger to him/herself, a danger to others, or at risk of loosing family and/or employment).
An initial interview is scheduled with the person
requesting an intervention to address a
specific crisis. During that interview, the counselor
develops a list of appropriate support people to
include in the Intervention. 1
Support people could be family members or friends
employer, co-workers, and/or a doctor. The support group meets 1-3 times to agree on
goals(what are the end results you are trying to
achieve in the intervention) and what might be some Possible consequences of the intervention.
Then the support team with a counselor conducts an
intervention with the person in crisis and attempts
to get him/her to acknowledge the seriousness of
the issue and agree to treatment. An intervention
can include placement in a treatment facility, if necessary.
The ultimate goal of an intervention is to get the
person in crisis to want help instead of being forced
Into receiving 2
