Local artists honoured by grants

If you could create a community of the future, what would it look like?

A mix of roads and buildings, infrastructure services, some parks and playgrounds, a huge chunk of diversity, safe and secure neighbourhoods, opportunities to grow, a bit of environment here and there.

We all have a vision for the community we call home. Working towards a shared vision is the aim of Wagga’s new Community Strategic Plan (CSP) – Wagga View: Our Future in Focus.

“Generating a clear and exciting vision for the future

is the purpose of the CSP. It defines who we are as a community today, and where we want to be in the next 30 to 40 years,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said.

“The only way of achieving a shared vision is to go directly to the people that make up our Wagga community.

“The CSP is not a Council plan, it’s a plan developed by the community for the community and together we are all responsible for achieving its delivery.”

To create this vision a series of hands-on, engaging events and activities open

to all residents in the Wagga Wagga LGA will be rolled out over a four week period in May and June.

This is your chance to share your views, thoughts, ideas and visions for the Wagga of the future.

Residents and businesses will take part in an amazing race scenario to emphasis key liveability elements in the city. A pop-up shop will operate in the Sturt Mall for three weeks, here, a wishing tree will grow out of resident’s thoughts and ideas and conversation can be had with community leaders.

There’s also a school’s

program and road show, stopping in more than 20 communities, villages and Wagga suburbs, which allows us to reach everyone in our community – keep an eye out for Council’s bright yellow community engagement truck, Charlie.

“There will be no shortage of engagement opportunities for the community during the four-week Wagga View consultation period,” Cr Kendall said. “I encourage all residents to take part and make their Wagga vision for the future count.”

Our future in focus: What’s your view, Wagga?

Teaching the art of animation to the Wagga community is Alice Markham’s dream plan after securing a $10,000 grant through the 2016 NSW Young Regional Artist Scholarship.

Alice is one of five young Wagga artists to receive a scholarship, including fellow Wagga Council team members Adele Packer, James Farley and Jacob Raupach.

Alice, who is completing an Honours Degree in animation and visual effects and has had her work shown on national and international platform, has been conducting animation workshops for adults and children in the Riverina for the past 12 months.

“Once hearing about the grant opportunity I thought this could be a great way for me

to construct a more beneficial workshop,” Alice said.

“With the grant I am hoping to travel to both Sydney and Melbourne to work with award winning animation artists, so that I can get a firsthand experience of their techniques while also getting professional advice.”

Alice and Adele have worked with Council on a range of projects. Most recently, they have been helping teach students taking part in Council’s Augmented Wetlands project, which explores the cultural significance of the Marrambidya wetland via augmented reality and mobile phone devices.

James is a casual assistant at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery and Jacob is a technical officer at the gallery.

WELL DONE: Mayor Rod Kendall congratulates 2016 NSW Young Regional Artist Scholarship recipients Alice Markham, James Farley, Jacob Raupach and Adele Packer.

We need your help!Wagga – this is your opportunity to

get involved and share your views and ideas on how we can be a bigger, better community, both today and into the future.

What 's your vision Wagga?

Make us an offer we can’t refuse. For the next two weeks, Council’s impound car

yard is open for business. All makes and models have to go. Some are

drive-away bargains, others require a bit of tender, loving, care. Either way, bargains are bound to be had.

There are 11 cars on the lot including a racy-red 2001 Alfa Romeo Sedan, a slick 2002 black VW beetle and five Ford and Holden sedans.

Expressions of Interest (EOI) from purchases who would like to snap up a cheap second-hand car are now open.

“All people need to do is make an offer on the vehicle they are interested in. If they have the highest offer at the end of the EOI period, then the car is theirs,” Manager Regulatory Services Greg Minehan said.

Purchases will make a bid on a vehicle that has been impounded by Wagga Council sometime in the past 12 months, is unregistered, has clear titles – meaning it is not under finance – and comes with a bill of sale certificate.

Some of the cars up for offer come with keys and it is encouraged that potential purchasers wanting to register a vehicle organises a mechanical check prior to sale.

“If you think you might be interested in one of the cars, check it out on Council’s website, and then, like you would do before any car purchase, head down to the lot and see the car first hand.

“If you are still interested after having a look,

then put forward your offer.”Council also has 32 abandoned shopping

trolleys for purchase, which can be repurposed for a range of uses such as in the garden or the shed.

Money raised from the abandoned car and trolley auction becomes general-purpose revenue, and is utilised to support the delivery of Council services and maintenance of facilities.

The cars can be viewed at the impound lot located at the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter on Glenfield Road on Wednesday 11 May, Friday 13 May, Wednesday 18 May or Friday 20 May from 3pm to 4.30pm.

All cars are also listed on Council’s website, wagga.nsw.gov.au/cars.

HOW TO MAKE AN EOI EOIs should contain purchases personal details, the impound number of the vehicle they are interested in and their nominated bid. EOIs can be:• Mailed: PO BOX 20, Wagga Wagga NSW

2650• Emailedl: [email protected] • In person: Civic Centre, Corner of Baylis and

Morrow streets• Submitted online: www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/

cars Enquiries phone 1300 292 442 or via email [email protected]. EOIs close 2pm, Monday 23 May

Give your place a tidy up before winter arrives at the next Free Tip Day is on Saturday 14 May.

Mark the date in your calendar and bring your household rubbish, garden waste and mixed recyclables down to the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) from 7am to 4.30pm.

“Free Tip Day is a great opportunity to get rid of those autumn leaves or clean out your shed or garage,” Council's Ron Cheney said.

“The Free Tip Days complement our normal service,

which includes more materials that can be disposed of for free every day due to increased recycling capability at GWMC.”

Televisions, computers and computer equipment can be disposed of for free, not just on Free Tip Day, but every day that the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre is open, as part of the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme. This offer is available to householders and small businesses only.

“You can also dispose of polystyrene for free all year round

at GWMC,” Mr Cheney said. “Council can reprocess it

on-site for reuse into a range of recycled products.”

Special wastes such as tyres, builders waste, refrigerative items, mattresses and gas bottles are not included in the free disposal day and will be charged as per normal fees and charges. Free disposal is limited to cars, vans, utes and single axle trailers only.

For more information and a full list of fees and charges, visit Council’s website wagga.nsw.gov.au or phone 1300 292 442.
