TRANSCRIPT
Greetings, brother Knights. It is a great honor to be chosen to lead 2008-2009. There are going to be great challenges for all of us this coming year. With all your support, the activities which we have done well over the years can continue with great success! If we all pull our resources and energies together, we will reap the rewards of unity and prosperity, benefiting all the activities we try to accomplish. I have ideas for an active Pro-Life agenda, strong support for the mentally challenged, activities, and much more. We also have state and national elections coming up in which Catholics must vote our
consciences without reservation. Participating in annual barbeques and veteran's holidays throughout the year is another area where we as Knights can be influential in the community. With participation by as many as possible, we will be recognized As brother Knights, a cohesive web of unity is essential for success. As I see it, each individual's participation, small or great, will benefit this council tenfold. We need full participation by all members, if possible. I am open to new, progressive ideas that will expand and influence the parishes and communities
benefiting from our efforts. God is great, brothers. All is possible with His guidance - great things will happen. Let us believe in ourselves and go for the win! Together we surely will succeed. Let's all pull together as brothers and accomplish our potential.

With the fraternal year drawing quickly to a close, Council 112 was able to conduct an abbreviated Tootsie Roll Drive by collecting donations at local parishes the weekend of June 21st/22nd. With no actual Drive chairman, Council Treasurer Jim Marshall, PGK was able to organize the annual fundraiser by concentrating specifically on area Catholic churches. The
Tootsie Roll Drive has become a yearly feature of Council 112’s community service, accepting donations to assist with Concord’s Special Olympics programs. Since the program’s inception many years ago, the New Hampshire State Council has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the benefit of the mentally handicapped in the community.
Monsignor Buckley Assembly 627 in Concord has elected to host a first-ever experimental “Economic” 4th Degree Exemplification. Proposed by District Master PSD Ed Kennedy, the exemplification is designed to appeal to 3rd Degree Knights with limited incomes or college commitments. With no Ladies’ Program or dinner banquet, the fee for the ceremony registration is lowered by nearly half to $40. Spectators can observe for only $10. A light lunch will be provided.
The exemplification will be conducted on Saturday, July 19th at St. Peter’s Parish Center, with registrants asked to arrive for 10:00 AM. As always, all 4th Degree Knights with regalia are strongly encouraged to attend. DM Kennedy must receive all Form 4s and registration payments no later than July 12th or the candidate will not be able to take the degree. Make checks payable to “District Master, NH Knights of Columbus” and send to Ed Kennedy, 933 Route 12 South, Fitzwilliam, NH, 03447.

You've read it here before and you'll read it here over and over again. Unfunded liabilities of Social Security and Medicare in excess of $100 trillion will sink Medicaid Long Term Care (LTC). That means most Americans will have to pay for their own long-term care in the future. Medicaid will no longer remain the principal LTC payor for the middle class and affluent. What's the connection? Social Security and Medicare don't pay for long-term care. So what effect does their financial weakness have on Medicaid and LTC? People on Medicaid have to contribute their income toward their cost of care. Social Security is a big part of the income of old people on Medicaid. So, when Social Security has to cut back, Medicaid LTC will lose a major source of funding. Medicare doesn't pay for LTC but it does fund 17 percent of nursing home expenditures and 38 percent of home health expenditures. And it pays generously. That's what keeps nursing homes and home health
agencies afloat financially despite dismally inadequate Medicaid reimbursements. So, when Medicare has to cut back, Medicaid LTC will be devastated. Okay, what's the evidence Social Security and Medicare can't go on propping Medicaid LTC up much longer? The 2008 Social Security and Medicare Trust Fund reports tag the programs' combined infinite-horizon unfunded liabilities at $16 trillion and $85 trillion, respectively. That's a total of $101 trillion, or around $330,000 for every man, woman and child in the United States. But look at it another way. According to today's Wall Street Journal, the total wealth of American households is $56 trillion. In other words, Social Security and Medicare are unfunded in an amount nearly equal to double the value of everything we as a nation of highly productive people own. Or consider this, according to Wikipedia, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the USA in 2007 was $13.8 trillion. GDP is the total market

value of all final goods and services produced within the country in a calendar year. So, the combined unfunded liability of Social Security and Medicare equals over seven years of the total productivity of the American economy. Get it now? Medicaid pays for most expensive long-term care in the U.S. It pays for the poor, but also for most of the middle-class and affluent who need LTC. But Medicaid is propped up by Social Security and Medicare, both of which programs are financially unsustainable. When they cut back, Medicaid LTC will collapse. That means most American's, all but the poorest of the poor, will have to pay for their own LTC in the future. In other words, the idea that people must buy LTC insurance to avoid catastrophic LTC spend down which was only a myth up to now will become the reality of the future. Consumers and financial advisors who are looking at LTC through the rear-view window won't see this coming. Those looking at LTC through the windshield will.

produce significant savings for the membership, as photocopying and mailing costs frequently run into the hundreds each month. Those receiving the newsletter by e-mail will have several advantages. They will receive their copy of the newsletter only moments after it is completed, making the news that much more timely. They will be able to print off one or dozens of copies as they see fit. And archiving personal copies of the newsletter will be made easier with its reduced size.
In an effort to further control council communications expenses, GK David Dale has agreed to support an initiative to deliver council newsletter copies by e-mail to those brother Knights so equipped. Other copies of the newsletter will be regularly archived on the council’s official website www.kofc112.org. Those Knights without online access will, of course, continue to receive paper newsletters—which will be smaller in length so as to assist in reducing photocopying costs. It is expected that these innovations will
