has made 241 tackles in his illustrious career, can move near the top of several career lists this season…among Derting’s highlights:

• With 14.5 career sacks Derting ranks tied for ninth on WSU’s list…eight sacks this year would put him among the top four;

• Derting has 98.0 yards in sacks to rank 10th on WSU’s career list;

• Derting’s 31.0 tackles-for-losses places him in a tie for fifth on the career list…six more would place him in the top four;

• Derting has 129.0 yards in TFL losses, 10th on the all-time list; 40 more yards would put him in the top six;

• Derting’s 241 tackles leaves him 12 short of a place on the Cougar career list; 100 tackles this year would place him sixth on the all-time list.

CURRENT COUGS DOT STAT LISTS: Several Cougars not

chronicled elsewhere in this release have made a place for themselves on WSU’s Top 10 list, including:

• Jerome Harrison’s 239 all-purpose yards at UCLA in 2004 rank eighth on WSU’s single-game list;

• Jerome Harrison’s 1,154 all-purpose yards in 2004 ranks 20th on the Cougar season list;

• Adam Braidwood had four sacks against Oregon State in 2004 to rank tied for fourth on the single-game list;

• Adam Braidwood had 25.0 yards in sacks at Oregon State in 2004, the eighth most by a Cougar in a game;

• Jason Hill’s 206 receiving yards against Colorado in 2004 ranks seventh on the WSU single-game list;

• Jason Hill’s 1,007 receiving yards in 2004 ranks fifth on the single-season list and he is just the sixth Cougar to top the 1,000 yard total;

• Jason Hill averaged 22.4 yards per reception in 2004 to rank fourth on the WSU single-season list.

A LONG TIME BETWEEN PULLMAN GAMES: WSU

opened in Martin Stadium Sept. 1 and doesn’t return home until Oct. 8 when Stanford visits the Cougars…the last time WSU had an extended absence between home games was in 1990 when WSU hosted UCLA Sept. 29, then was on the road until playing ASU at home Nov. 10.

COUGARS PLAY 12 ROOKIES: WSU played nine freshmen

and three transfers in the season’s first two games…it is the most first-year players to see action in Bill Doba’s 17 years at WSU…the transfers to play were DE Lance Broadus, DB Lorenzo Bursey and DB DeWayne Patterson…the freshmen to see action were DT A’i Ahmu, LB Cory Evans, WR Brandon Gibson, LB Jason Stripling, LB Greg Trent, WR Benny Ward, LB Courtney Williams, DB Michael Willis, RB DeMaundray Woolridge…nine of the newcomers play on defense and three are offensive players.

WSU HAS EXTRA TIME TO PREPARE: Washington State

has extra time to prepare for each of its three opponents following its Sept. 1 season-opener against Idaho…the Cougars had one extra day for their Sept. 9 game at Nevada and will have an extra day to prepare for Grambling State in Seattle Sept. 17…WSU then has a bye week before opening Pac-10 play at Oregon State Oct. 1…WSU is 6-4 over the last five seasons when having extra time to prepare, including 5-2 following a bye week.

STREAKS AND NOTES: • WSU has won seven straight non-conference games in

Pullman…the last home loss was to Idaho in 2000; • WSU opened the 2005 season against two Western Athletic

Conference schools (Idaho, then Nevada)…the last time WSU opened against two non-conference teams from the same conference was 1988 when the Cougars faced Illinois and Minnesota out of the Big Ten…in 1997 WSU opened against UCLA, then played USC…the Cougs beat both opponents in both 1988 and 1997.

• Last time WSU played a I-AA school was Sept. 21, 2002…Cougars defeated Montana State 45-21 in Pullman…Cougars are 43-2 all-time against current I-AA members, including 14-0 since a 13-12 loss to then-I-AA Montana, Oct. 25, 1947.

• WSU has played three games at Qwest Field and as allowed its opponent one offensive touchdown (Nevada in 2002)…Cougars shut out Idaho in 2003 while Colorado scored a touchdown on defense and another on special teams last year.

BRINK HAS SIX TD PASSES: Sophomore Alex Brink is off

to a fast start for the 2005 season…in his first two games, Brink has connected for six touchdowns against just two interceptions…he is also completing passes at a 61.5 percent rate with a 161.71 efficiency rating… all four categories are big improvements over last season, when he threw seven TD’s, five interceptions, with a completion percent for 50 percent and a passing efficiency of 113.26.

MISC. WSU PLAYER NOTES: • Kyle Basler has averaged 40 or more yards 28 times in his

career and has booted 46 punts 50 yards or longer; • Mkristo Bruce has 10.5 career sacks, 8.5 in the last 11

games; • DeWayne Patterson, in his Cougar debut at free safety,

made five tackles and recorded one sack; • WSU lists three first-year freshmen as backup

linebackers…Cory Evans, Greg Trent and Jason Stripling all are listed #2 and played against Idaho and Nevada;

• Courtney Williams, a true freshman, looked like a special teams veteran against Idaho, making five tackles…he had one of the top 400 meter times in the nation (preps) last year, 47.24 seconds;

• Troy Bienemann has caught passes in 28 of his 36 games; • Alex Brink has thrown 12 TD passes in his seven starts; • Michael Bumpus had a career-high eight receptions against

Idaho for a career-best 88 yards; • Jerome Harrison has gone over the 100-yard rushing mark

in each of his last five games; • Jason Hill has racked up over 100 receiving yards in four

games and come close three times, 98 yards against UCLA last year, 96 yards against Idaho two weeks ago and 92 at Nevada;

• Loren Langley has hit 39 of 41 extra point kicks…a blocked PAT and a bad snap accounted for the misses.

COUGS OPEN 2006 AT AUBURN: Washington State and the

Auburn Tigers will open their respective seasons next fall in a game to be televised by ESPN…the game will be played at Auburn and does not have a return game in the deal, which was put together for national television…the two teams have not previously met on the gridiron.

scoring streaks on the line: • The Cougars have scored in 228 consecutive Pacific-10

games, the longest active streak for any league team...the last time WSU was shut out in Pac-10 play was at Oregon State in 1975.

• WSU has scored in 240 consecutive games since a 44-0

shutout at Ohio State in 1984…the streak is the second longest among D-I schools…schools with streaks over 200 games are: Michigan 252, WSU 240, Oregon 233, Florida State 210 and Florida 205;

• The Cougars have scored in 185 consecutive Martin

Stadium home games since a 21-0 loss to Oregon State in Pullman in 1956.

NOTHING LIKE HOME: WSU performs better at home than

on the road, as do most schools: • Since 1989, at home, the Cougars are 54-36 (50.0%); • On the road since 1989 the team is 46-51 (47.4%); • WSU’s 6-0 Pullman record in 1997 is the best ever for the

Cougars, while the 2001 record of 6-1 is the best on the road since the 1988 team also went 6-1; WSU was also 6-0 in “home” games in 2003, with one win coming in Seattle;

• WSU is 19-6 in home games and 17-8 on the road since 2001…the Cougs have had a winning record on the road the past five years:

BRUCE ATTENDS CONFERENCE: Sophomore defensive

end Mkristo Bruce was among 321 NCAA student-athletes selected to attend the 2004 NCAA Leadership Conference in late May…the conference was designed to enhance student-athletes’ leadership and communication skills and to enable them to become more effective leaders and motivators.

WSU AMONG ELITE WITH 10-WIN SEASONS:

Washington State was one of just four NCAA Div. I teams to record 10 wins in each of the 2001-02-03) seasons…the others are Maryland, Miami (FL) and Oklahoma.

2003 SEASON AMONG BEST: WSU’s 10-3 finish in 2003

equaled the fifth best record for the Cougars since the 1920’s when teams began playing 10 or more games…WSU’s best records include 9-1 (90.0%) in 1930, 10-2 (83.3%) in 1929, 1997 and 2002 and 10-3 (76.9%) in 2002 and 2003.

BACK-TO-BACK 10-WIN SEASONS RARE IN PAC-10:

WSU posted three straight 10-win seasons in 2001-02-03, a rare fete in the Pac-10…WSU also had four 10-win seasons between 1997 and 2003 and made two Rose Bowl appearances…how rare were those 10-win seasons:

• WSU and USC are the only Pac-10 teams with four 10-win

seasons in a seven-year period…USC has done it three times, but WSU is the only team to do it since 1978;

• WSU and USC are the only teams with three straight 10-win seasons, USC in 1931-32-33 and 2002-03-04, while WSU did it in 2001-02-03.

• Just five Pac-10 teams have had back-to-back 10-win seasons since the lead went to 10 teams in 1978, WSU plus Oregon 2000-01, UCLA 1997-98 and 1987-88, Washington 1981-82 and 1990-91, and USC 1978-79 and 2002-03-04;
